I don't think there can be any doubt that whoever is coaching the PP needs to be relieved of their position...jesus...

ECQF Game 3 GDT : Tampa Bay Lightning at Red Wings, 7:00 EST

Given how many of our player are afflicted with the same condition, I'd rather someone who might actually score occasionally and can be sheltered and used on PPs. That said, I appreciate that his impact is limited by our lack of D who can play proper breakout passes. I wouldn't mind him sitting if Mantha or Even Jurco were in the line up, but I can't remember the last time Andersson did anything at all in the offensive zone.

ECQF Game 3 GDT : Tampa Bay Lightning at Red Wings, 7:00 EST

This game is a perfect illustration of why I want Pulks in the line-up. The guys are playing well, dominating with their speed, but none of them shoot on the PP and not many of them have real goalscorers instincts. Pulks has a lot of limitations, but the guy had 48 goals in his last 62 AHL reg season and playoff games, and absolutely kills 5 on 3 because it gives him time and space to get the cannon off and on net. Even at NHL level, where he has struggled, his pace is 14 goals 28 points averaging about 11-12 mins per night. But no, we need Andersson who will barely play. That said, not only do todays lines look better, they also make a lot more sense.

ECQF Game 2 Post-GDT: at Tampa Bay 5, Red Wings 2

Hate to take any positives at all. Larkins first PO goal. Richards and green showing they were worth picking up in FA. Sheehan proving once again he has rather more awareness as a net front guy than Abby. Abby trying to kill anyone in blue.... And that's all. Not going to repeat all the gdt comments, but mrasek needs to play at the joe and smith needs to be back in the lineup. I would not expect it to make any difference. Our roster has been added to since last year, there's is depleted and the gap between the teams has widened. This team just doesn't play well very often anymore and has no bona fide goalscorers

Make that 6 bulls*** calls in a row. 3 wings bleeding so far this game from high sticks, no call. disgusting...Dats is bleeding a foot away from the ref.

4/7 GDT : Red Wings at Boston Bruins, 7:00 ET

That one all came from Howard screwing the icing. Wings have been awful in this one, Bruins opportunistic. This team just can't cope with back to backs....

3/29 GDT - Red Wings at Canadiens - 7:30 PM EST

jesus our D is absolutely pathetic. DK looks lost at the mo, kronwalls legs have gone, Ericsson can't clear the zone and his passing has gone through the floor, Quincey's puck movement and coverage are erratic as hell, green gets manhandled in his own end and smith, for all his improvement, always has a mistake in him. Marchenko is a rookie who has some promise but is still quite Raw in some ways. Has enough about him that #5 could have made him look good, but when he should be the one babysat, he's trying to babysit senior pros. Up front, our zone control is generally awful unless #13 is on the Ice as he's the only one with both the skill to buy himself space, the poise to take whatever time he can, and a good enough Wrister to keep the opposition guessing. And Abby and helm are the only ones beyond the twins who are really gritty in their attempts but at least we have a few forwards that could be asignifivsmt part of a future core. Tonight was a reminder of how poor our d is

A bad hit even ignoring the fact he didn;t have the puck. Even the MTL announcers say that it was a dangerous hit

That is a bad bad hit by Emelin. Even the MTL announcers think it wasn't a good one, and symapthise with Abdelkader. But the stripes remain as essentially pointless as ever

Quite impressed with how objective the Montreal feed I'm watching is. Basically praising some of their call ups while saying that all their offence is coming from detroit's complete inability to be competent in their own end...

    Where Are The Point Getters?

This is undoubtedly true. 7th round superstars are even rarer now than they were. But... Schneider is the only goaltender in the top 10 stat wise in any category taken in the 1st round. 2 of this years current top 5 goal scorers (and 8 of the top 20) were 2nd round or later picks. In points its 4 of the top 10 and 11 of the top 30. 6 of the top 10 scoring D men (and 19 of the top 30 were taken 2nd round or later). Sure if we are looking at a decade of 5th, 6th or 7th round picks, they are not as good Datsyuk, but Shaw, Palat, Stone, Fast, Klingberg, Gallagher, Anders Lee, Hoffman, Nyquist, Brodie, Atkinson, Demers, Jamie Benn, Muzzin, Hornqvist and Stralman still fell through the cracks. And If I were to include 4th round picks, the number and quality increases a fair bit. No-one expects another 7th round Franchise center. But that's also why we aren't trading away our 1st round picks any more.

    Where Are The Point Getters?

True but... Players after the EuroTwins steals picked lower than Emmerton in the last 15 by the red wings. (and Not including Grigorenko who was a possible/probable? 1st liner before he nearly died in the crash) Hudler, Fleischmann, Filppula, Ericsson, Howard, Quincey, Franzen, Abdelkader, Helm, Matthias, Andersson, Nyquist, Tatar, Nestrasil, Jarnkrok, Pulks, Mrazek, Oullett, Marchenko, AA ... Ok none are equal to a top 5 overall pick, but given that there's not 1 first rounder among them, that's a decent haul. Looking further around the league in the last decade or so almost every year a small handful of genuine first-liners fall past the first round. Ok, so the franchise players are few, but the very best D-men and goaltenders are drafted AFTER the first round as much as in it. Of course most of the very best forwards are in the first round, and at its upper echelons. But Give the wings 3 or 4 of Weber or Bergeron instead of trading our pick in teh top 50 away, Byfuglin or Enstrom (instead of trading away our 7th round pick) or Pavelski (instead of Stefan Blom) All in 03 Edler instead of trading our 2nd Round pick, or Rinne instead of Stolyarov in 04. Rask, Oshie, Niskanen, Neal, Vlasic instead of Kindl, Letang or Quick instead of Abby, Hjalmarsson or Yandle instead of Ritola or Hornquist or Stralman instead of Stamler in 05. Etc Etc ( including the Likes of Lucic, Subban, Benn, Simmonds, Holtby, Josi, O'Reilly, Barrie, Faulk, Klingberg, Palat etc who either were second round cornerstones or late round steals). and suddenly we are a major contender without a single top 30 pick. Of course multiple picks in the top 10 should yield better players, particularly at centre, but great scouting can make a massive difference. As for the cup winners being built around top 5 picks, sure its true, but in each case there were 1 or 2 players that were as important as their first 5 picks who were drafted 2nd round or later. Keith, Quick, Letang spring to mind immediately out of the winners who tanked first.

    Jensen

The problem Jensen has is that although his downside is AHL top 4 d-man, and projects to be somewhere between career AHL-er and 6/7 D-man in the NHL as things currently stand, his upside just isn't as high as those ahead of him in the depth chart. Oulette is a better outlet passer, Sproul has size and that shot, and Marchenko is a bit bigger and nastier. Were this the year he was drafted, when the wings had Lids, Rafalski, Kronner and Stuart eating up 20m+ between them, but providing an incredibly strong top 4 d, then he'd have had a shot as a reliable d-man with some jump...because he seems to offer a better all round game than Lebda. But right now the wings now have less quality but more NHL ready d-men, and given that they are in a partial rebuild, those with greater upside are just going to get the look first, particularly as Oulette and Marchenko have shown themselves to be fairly reliable. To bring Jensen up they'd have to send Marchenko down, as they can't send 2 x 2m+ dmen to GR via waivers unless they both fall off a cliff completely. At this stage, Jensen's real competition is Kindl, Smith and Ericsson...there's no point bringing up someone who you have question marks about when every point matters to get the occasional game or be number 7 when you already have 7 D that can't be sent down, and another that has cemented a spot in the line-up. Basically Jensen's got to blow the doors off in training camp in the summer, or his days as a wing are done. Unless miracle of miracles, Kenny makes a trade!

    Bravo, Smitty

Smith has always had the talent to make an impact at this level...remember his first call up, where conducive pairings gave him less responsibility and he went 0.5 ppg....For entirely understandable long term reasons, Babs tried to force him into being a more defensively responsible D-man, but all this did was neuter his strengths, while he showed no real aptitude for resolving his weaknesses. Now its a case of usage, freedom and confidence and we are seeing the guy we thought we had in 2012. He's always going to be risky, but as has been said elsewhere, you may as well let him play and get the reward rather than shut him down and just have slightly less risk...

Who and What are the Detroit Red Wings?

This team is on the lower part of the upward curve of the parabola and have managed to turn over 65% of the roster without missing the playoffs and has done so being a couple of dodgy refereeing calls away from beating the eventual cup winners or runners-up twice in recent years. We still aren't a legit contender, but as ever have enough about the roster to suggest that if they get hot and and lucky with the draw, they could go deep into the playoffs. The wings are trying the ambitious and unusual approach of trying to turn over a complete roster, using primarily home-grown players and progress to a position of challenging without ever having a truly fallow period. Whether this can work will be clear in the next 2-3 years, but if successful would be an outstanding achievement and could possibly extend the streak to 30-35 years, which would be amazing. The worth of being able to ice a playoff team every year, despite transition, will only serve to keep Detroit relevant for potential long term UFAs regardless of CBA developments. People have bemoaned missing out on Suter, but we were in the last two for the most desirable UFA in the last decade and only lost out due to a combination of personal circumstances for the player. As a club the DRW remain in great shape. As a roster? We'll know a lot more after the next 2 years.
