I don't think the Wings are a team that free agents want to join. I don't think players are dying to be traded to Detroit either. That's in the past. We're a mediocre team and have a reputation for underpaying players in the free agent market. Our best players are past their primes. We're better off than Toronto and are not a sinking ship, but the rest of the bolded part of your quote can easily apply to the Wings. BTW, I don't think Toronto's ship is sinking either. It's already sunk. Can't get any worse. Even Buffalo has some hope for the future.

There is no America's team. Not even the Cowboys. This isn't the 70's. The NFL is so big now that pretty much everyone has a local team they root for. Hockey is a niche sport, and hockey fans don't typically like the Red Wings. I don't see any NHL team getting national recognition in the media.
