ECSF: Tampa Bay Crying Coopers vs. Montreal Complaining Canadiens
GMRwings1983 replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
Very original. How about actually winning a playoff series? Who said anything about the Cup every season? I'm just looking at the big picture of the results. Not saying we didn't do anything well against Tampa. We did. But it was the same as the Chicago series two years ago. Not enough scoring in big moments, despite shutting people down. I don't see us scoring enough goals on Price to beat Montreal like Tampa Bay is doing at will. -

You're bragging about a team that won one playoff series in the last four seasons. We didn't shut down Johnson. He hurt us the whole series. Chicago beat us last time, although we beat them in 2009 before they peaked. Still, our stars were terrible against Chicago in 2013. Expended too much energy shutting people down. We did play well against Anaheim in 2013, but their stars hurt is in the other playoff series' we played against them. In 2009, Malkin hurt us big time. We spent all resources to shut down Crosby. We did beat them the season before, so I'll give you that. Bottom line is that our defensive mistakes and lack of clutch scoring makes us a poor playoff team. That's why we only have one playoff series win the last four seasons. Shutting down one line doesn't win you a series. To say that we would have beaten Montreal is like Nashville fans saying in 2008 that they were a Cup contender if they hadn't run into Detroit. Different matchup, different problems. Even if we do shut down Montreal's stars, can we score on Price? TB can score because they scored tons of goals this season. We didn't. We don't score a lot in the playoffs which is why we usually lose in the playoffs nowadays. -

This would be the equivalent of Vancouver fans saying in 2002, "We could have beaten the Canes in the Finals". Same thing with Nashville in 2008. Teams that win the Cup frequently have scares in the early rounds. Not saying TB will win the Cup, but you get the point. I can't see us beating Montreal because we suck against them and against Price. -
I'm starting to think you're trying to be a bigger smartass than me. Lilja probably had something to do with that.

She disagrees.

Chicago has to be the favorite right now to win. -

Does this mean the league will have another lockout the following season? -

I can't believe the NHL would let this team from Florida knock off two original 6 teams. I guess only the NBA and NFL care about ratings. -

What a chokejob by the Canadiens. That should silence their arrogant fanbase. -
So not in McGrattan or Lilja's league?

Jim Devellano on Mantha's play: "Very disappointing"

Good question. What does Devellano do? -
Jim Devellano on Mantha's play: "Very disappointing"
GMRwings1983 replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
The displeasure comes from the fact that he could have kept his mouth shut. Or if he wants to be honest, why doesn't he "honestly" evaluate his performance as well as that of the other higher-ups? Like hey, we can't win a playoff series, our young stars underwhelmed in the playoffs, our defense can't score and our signings/trades turned out poorly. I like honesty, but Devellano needs to come out and criticize other things and not just Mantha. -
Players who might be available due to teams cap issues

We need a bad guy. -
Fair enough. I have no issue with that. Kronwall does do other things besides score (or not score), but to me, he doesn't do them as well as Weber or Suter. He's not as good defensively and doesn't log as many minutes. We also don't have any other offensive defensemen. Those teams do. We need him to score more.
-
So why can't we agree that Kronwall's stats in the playoffs the last three years suck and ignore the two players your brought up? Who cares about them?
-
Has the love for Glendenning gone that far here? There's a lot of posters here who agree with me, just like they disagree with me on this issue. I don't think one group is any more unrealistic than another just because we all read the same forum incessantly. The sports media doesn't follow the Wings as much as we do. We know this team better than the average hockey analyst who follows all the teams a little bit. And even then we disagree. No, I'm just saying there's a good reason to question his play. There's others who feel the same way. There are others who don't. That's called an argument. Something you love.
-
Except we don't have any defensemen with "good" shots on the PP. Kronwall is supposed to be the guy. And who is the chuck it at the net goon? Weber? He does more than chuck it at the net. So my OP was irrational and not based on reality or facts? Right.
-
Well, as far as I know the only people who think Kronwall is a legit #1 are blind homers on LGW. See how that argument works both ways? I'm just looking at his numbers. Yes, there's more to stats, and yes Weber has underachieved as well. You've already admitted you'd take Weber over Kronwall. He has more of an overall impact on the game. He logs big minutes. He's a leader. Suter is a shutdown specialist and logs huge minutes also. So it's not just stats.
-
I will say this, Suter is more of a defensive defensemen. I'm not sure if he'll ever score lots of points. Weber has been decent in the playoffs, but If I'm a Preds fan, I'd want a little more. Should I take your word for it? I don't read other teams' forums so I don't know what the consensus on Kronwall is. But the stats I found for him weren't cherry picked. Since he took over for Lidstrom, he's been pedestrian in the playoffs. I wasn't looking at the rest of his playoff career when he had less pressure on him and was a second pairing guy.

Product of our great coaching. -
Would have been great. By the time he did come to the NHL, he was past his prime and had to adjust into a new league, system and country. Also, at that time players were declining in their 30's. Not like nowadays where a guy can still play at an elite level. They're not getting a pass. There's just nobody questioning their status as elite defensemen in the league. Kronwall had a chip on his shoulder when Lidstrom retired and he became the top guy. He hasn't delivered. He's the one who needs to legitimize himself as a legit top defensemen. He's underwhelmed.

I think Dan Cleary needs to publicly call out Devellano for these comments.
