Truth. It's a thread asking for what people predict the season will bring. Not a only post potential positives thread Having said that, I do think this is the year we begin to see the upswing of the reload. Not saying the team is a cup contender, but I just think they'll finally show they are on the right path.
-
I expect to see 2-2.5 per. Either way, I expect people to complain about it now but be praising it come the final year. That's usually how these contracts work out
-
To be fair, after the injury trouble this team had the last 2 years, I really don't think he had any intentions of stirring the pot by saying such a thing.
-
He'll get more than 1.5. It's a short contract, the salary will be higher.
-
1. Weiss will make a lot of people eat crow by having a 50+ point season 2. Hank will have a career year. 3. Howard will have a bounce back season. 4. The team makes the playoffs with a lot less stress than the past 2 seasons. 5. A forward we'll hate to see go will be traded to bring in a dman that we need. 6. Many Wings fans will finally see that the team is going in the right direction.
-
Why would you hope he has a terrible season? Don't you think it would be better if he had a legit bounce back year and made the team better?
-
Definitely agree Cleary was never a fighter, but he was definitely holding his own in that one until Pronger went for his eye. I'll never forget it because it pissed me off so damn much. It's kind of crazy how unlucky Cleary has been with injuries when you think about it. Eye gouging, getting his jaw broke by a slap shot from Samuelsson. That's just all before his knee issues.
-
To be fair, Pronger grabbed at his face and gouged his eye, putting Cleary on the shelf for some time. ***** desperation move by Pronger in that fight, as Cleary was no doubt getting the better of him.
-
Struggles of his past few seasons be damned, I f'in love playoff Dan Cleary. The one reason why I'm not getting upset over his signing, as I know if he is healthy come April, he will be an asset. Hoping he can be this season's Dallas Drake! If only Cleary and Franzen could trade bodies lol. But I gotta go with that game 7 winner. One of those moments i'll never forget.
-
Exactly. The defense is automatically improved significantly just by experience alone. DeKeyser and Smith will continue to get better, and Quincey is very likely over his big time struggles in this lineup. Which he has already shown. Not to mention there is a very real possibility Kindl may never be in the lineup again *fingers crossed* We get that puck moving dman and suddenly the defense is looking realgud. Sometimes I feel like I am the only one who is very excited to see what this team is capable of with the youth all together for the entire season

I'm assuming he means NHL-ready top 6 forwards. As promising as Mantha is, he has yet to prove a thing in pro hockey.

Cleary isn't blocking Jurco from playing in the NHL. Even without Cleary, it is pretty obvious he'll be in the AHL to start the season. Alfie returning would have us at 13 forwards not counting Cleary. Cleary and Andersson are gonna be in a dog fight to try to avoid being the 13th and 14th forwards. There are 12 other forwards VERY unlikely to give up a permanent spot to either. It is better to have Cleary taking up a healthy scratch than Jurco, don't you think? A returning Alfie has more impact on where Jurco starts the season. If Alfie decides he can't play, Jurco will have his shot to win a roster spot. Just like Cleary. If Alfie comes back, Jurco will be the first call up. If he makes an immediate impact, he'll no doubt stick around. Cleary for one year is a low risk signing. Who cares what the salary is? The cap space was there, and Holland felt he owed him. That's a stand up move whether we agree with it or not. If Cleary is in the lineup, he has to earn his way there. He'll only take a job from a kid if he earns it. In the mean time, if he does in fact have a bounce back season, that is fantastic for us. If he struggles like last year, he won't play. It's really that simple. It's either give Cleary a contract or give Landon the spot. No offence to him, but nobody seems to high on him anymore. He is likely Emmerton 2.0. At least if Cleary can have a bounce back season, it gives the team a shot of having a playoff warrior on the team to do the dirty work. He was important to the team in the 2013 playoffs while having a rough, injured year. A healthy Cleary come playoff time could be a great thing. If not? It's just a one year contract that does nothing to hurt the team. -
Totally agree. Too much potential to trade him. I really do think the most tradable asset we have is Tatar, as far as players go for teams wanting a player that can be put in their lineup right away. I'd love to see Tatar remain a Wing no doubt, but in the end the team does need to get bigger, and if Tatar can be packaged for a legit top 4 righty, I think it would be foolish to not do so. Of course this is assuming the right deal is made.

Just curious as to what you'd do different? Throw huge money at UFA's and handicap the team cap-wise? Trade away all our best players to get a few years of lottery picks, and hope we luck out and get future superstars? Trade all our prospects for impact players so we can be a great team for 4-5 years then just have to go through all of this all over again? The team spent the last few years stocking up on young talent. We are now beginning to see the benefit from that. Sure there were some frustrating signings along the way like Sammy, and this one here today. I'm not saying Holland has been perfect. No GM in this league is. But management as a whole has done a nice job of building lots of depth in the prospect pool that will give this team a chance to stay competitive for years to come. These kids won't become big time players overnight. It takes time. I'm not here singing Holland's praises. I'm just saying that based on his overall performance as a whole, people are blowing it all way out of proportion. I get that we all have our own opinions. The Cleary signing gives many people another reason to let loose on him. But when you take a deep breath, step back and look at the franchise as a whole, it's going in a pretty good direction. Hardly a nose dive some make it out to be. One year of Cleary doesn't suddenly derail that. Sincerely, A guy who dislikes the Cleary signing -

Getting upset over the NTC is just looking for an excuse to complain. We all agree it is not a good signing. We get it. The NTC is a minor detail that Cleary asked for to prevent ending up somewhere like Buffalo. It isn't a big deal. He wouldn't get traded regardless. I do think calling for Holland to be fired over this is overreacting. You'd think he traded Hank and Dats for a 5th round pick with what's being said about him. If Cleary has a bounce back year, then great. If not, no big deal. His career as a Wing would come to an end. No harm done. But some are acting as if Holland blatantly passed on guys like Vanek or Richards just so he can sign Cleary instead. Doesn't work that way, folks. -

A NTC means nothing for this contract. IF he can't keep up and play decent hockey, nobody would take him on in a trade regardless. And if he does play well, that's good for us. Only a NMC would make this signing worst. And that isn't the case. -

If we can get Winter Classic Cleary come playoff time, I'll forgive Holland. Until then, damnit. -

Assuming Alfie comes back, there wouldn't be a spot right away for Jurco anyway until an injury allows it. I'm just gonna hope for the best that Cleary can put a solid season together. I don't expect 2008 Cleary, of course. But even just playing responsible hockey while chipping in every now and again would be nice. I just hope he holds up and that we can get playoff warrior Cleary back. Just hoping for a Dallas Drake type season from him. Keep it together long enough to leave nothing on the table come playoff time. Even broken down Cleary has shown he can still be effective come April. -

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2014/07/red_wings_daniel_cleary_determ.html Good to know his knee seems to be doing much better now. I do hope he proves us wrong, and I'm glad he understands he has to earn a spot in the lineup. Like I said before, he does not hurt the team if he can't keep up and ends up in the press box. Watching all the games doesn't take a roster spot from anybody in GR. The signing is frustrating. That's something I agree with. I do think it is crappy for certain fans (mainly twitter) to be bashing Cleary over it. The guy wants to play. Sure I don't think it should be here, but I can't fault the guy for still having the determination to contribute. This is one situation where I am dying to eat some crow. Prove us all wrong, Dano. -
I sure as hell hope not. People want Blashill to take his place so bad. I'd love for him to eventually become Bab's assistant for a couple years again first, before eventually becoming the #1 bench boss.

Even if he does contribute some, that contract is disgusting. At least if Cleary s***s the bed this season there will be no verbal agreement to keep bringing him back. And yes, I am aware someone is gonna reply to this saying Holland will bring sign him yet again next summer. -

As if they have any right to laugh at a one year deal for Cleary after that Clarkson contract -

But in the end, old guys were benched for the kids. It didn't start well, but in the end the best players did play. If it continues to be that way, this isn't a big deal. -

From what I've heard Weiss has been doing the Gary Roberts thing. I may have dreamed that though
