Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

Landing a legit top 4 makes quincey expendable. Hank's contract could come off the cap for the rest of the season due to his surgery. Going beyond this year, a lot of dead cap space comes off the books. You'd also have to think Alfie will probably hang it up. Kesler would be a nice way to replace his production going forward. We'd also have to give up a current roster player to land the Likes of Kesler as well. Either way, cap-wise it can definitely work for the rest of this season.

Truth. Sure we can also use a puck moving dman. as far as defense goes, adding Kesler would improve the teams overall ability to defend. I by no means expect the Wings to land Kesler, but I sure as hell wouldn't complain if it ended up happening. Especially if we were to land someone like Edler or Ehrhoff as well.

This is a trade discussion thread. There is nothing wrong with talking about Kesler. If you don't want him here, fine. Doesn't mean the rest of us can't discuss 'what if' scenarios.

Is Shero insane? Icing a dangerous top 6 is worthless when all you can afford for your bottom 6 is AHL plugs. Most overrated GM in hockey.

    Edler-Kesler Vs. Ehrhoff-Stewart

I don't get why people think Ehrhoff's contract is so bad. IT's just 4 million a year, and the cap is gonna keep going up. in 2-3 years a dman of his ability for that price is gonna be a steal. Who cares if it is a long contract. If he retires before it is out, the Sabres are on the hook for the cap penalty. Ehrhoff is literally the safest bet out there for this team on defense.

Having said that, if Mantha or M-raz were wanted as part of a package for an elite player? then for god sakes yes, get it done lol. By saying that, I mean your Drew Doughty's, Stomkos', Tavares', etc. If for some reason someone like that wanted out of their city, then I say do whatever it takes to get them, assuming it isn't a rental. Wishful thinking, of course.

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

Well I said Mantha and Mrazek should be untouchable lol. I said anyone but them not in our lineup right now. I like Sheahan as well, I just think if we could get another gritty, rugged forward for him right now, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Disagree on the Buffalo trade. Miller is a rental, and Ott is a bottom 6 forward. Halak and Stewart should fetch decent returns. I think in the end, Buffalo will have done quite well. Losing Miller was a blow, but odds are he would have walked in the summer anyway. Good on him for getting his team some assets for him. Absolutely no way is Tarasenko gonna be given up for a rental or Ott. I might be in the minority, but I think the Sabres got the best of it, especially if they get something for Halak and Stewart.

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

IMO if we are gonna make moves to make a run for it, it should be when we have healthy eurotwins. I think the best bet would be to land a top 4 dman now, then hope for the best. Get a top 6 forward as well if it makes sense (as in not give up a bunch of kids in our lineup right now). I know we;ll have to give up prospects to get something in return. But there has to be untouchables as well. Nyquist and Jurco IMO are too important. Nyquist is playing great, and we need him. A player with Jurco's size and skill doesn't come around every day. Tatar, as much as I'd hate to see him go, can be packaged in a deal for the right player in return IMO. He is great, but I think management needs to try and focus on holding on to the bigger guys. Sheahan I can see packaged for a more established guy like Kesler or Stewart. Sheahan would be nice to hold on to, but i think we'll be fine down the middle in the bottom 6 with the likes of Helm and Glendening. Of course with what I just said I think Andersson is expendable as well. Nothing against him, I just find him slow, and see more use in a guy like Glendening centering the 4th line. As for kids not on the roster right now, I could see any of them outside of Mantha and Mrazek being tradable for the right return. Call me crazy, but like I said, you gotta give something up to get something back. And if we can get a non rental in return that can make this team a lot better going forward, I say giver. I don't blame him for not making trades every year for the price teams ask for rentals. He has been patient, and it is showing it has started to pay off. When this team is getting close to being able to make a run, we'll have plenty of prospects/picks to make a run for it. It's all a matter of timing, and in the cap era that time doesn't come around every year.

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

No, he just doesn't sell the farm every year solely to place fans come trade deadline. That's a good thing. Ask the Rangers, Capitals, and Flyers how being big players at the deadline every year has worked out. History has always been in favor of the smaller hockey trades when it comes to this time of year. Makes me glad we have a GM like Holland and not one like McPhee or Sather. Didn't realize motivation suddenly teaches you how to play defense. s***, someone sign me! I need to motivation!

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

Well, when he does make a trade, he doesn't make the big splash. he trades for a guy that can come to Detroit and fit right in, and fill a need the team has. Stuart being a great example. Not the biggest name, but someone who can come in and be effective off the bat. UFA is the ideal place to take the risks, as you can then sign a short term deal and see how it plays out. Trading for a big, long term contract that may or may not work out is not Holland's style

Lidstrom had a minus year and won the Norris trophy. Nobody here is ripping on Myers for his +/-. It's a useless stat when it comes to a player. J-Bo hasn't looked great in a lot of his time in Calgary, but he was never bad. He was their go to dman, logging the big minutes and playing against the best players. He looks more motivated now, and determined. It's gonna take a lot more than motivation to turn Myers around.

Whether Myers turns it around or not, it is difficult to argue that Ehrhoff is the safer option, and the safe route is the route Holland tends to take.

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

I have no doubt Myers will become a solid dman someday. But the Wings really don't need a 3 years ago Ericsson who can put up a few points right now. We need a dman that can step in and make this team better right now. Myers has too many growing pains to get through right now, that he may never get totally get through. The Wings cannot afford a 5.5 million dollar risk. We have bad contracts coming off the books this summer. No need to nullify that by taking on an even bigger one.

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

J-Bo was never bad in Calgary. He just didn't play with an edge. He was just going through the motions. He was never bad by any means. He was still steady, eating up a lot of minutes. Check my history and you'll see I really wanted him here. Myers is not a steady dman. He coughs up the puck, and looks lost in his own end. He is basically getting paid to be a 2-3 dman, but is producing as if he were a pp specialist. IT's one thing to take a risk on a guy on a one year deal to see if he could live up to potential, but a long term contract at his hit is crazy. Put Myers on a team with a stacked D, and you can hide his mistakes. But a good team won't pay him that money to not eat big minutes. His only hope is to play for a bad team and get his career back on track. Dude, he already gave up lol. Let it go

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

In the end, it is not the type of risk Holland will take. Arguing about it really is pointless, as Myers will absolutely not happen come Wednesday He would definitely fit in well if he were to put the Kronwalling behind him lol. Sure, he is injury prone and all lol

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

Agreed. Firm but fair, however. Torts is too much on the calling out side IMO. He needs a coach that won't put up with his antics, but won't bench him every time he makes a mistake as well. 100% agreed. Subban is a guy you'd "take a risk" on. He has potential to become a top 5 dman in this league. Myers, not even close.
  17. marcaractac

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

Subban isn't without his flaws, but it is laughable to put Myers in the same league as Subban. Subban's biggest weakness is needing to grow up, and put his team first. Subban has the type of ceiling you seem to think Myers has. Subban will be fine once Montreal gets a proper coach. Therrien is an idiot, and his young players won't get better if he doesn't give them a chance to learn. We need a dman who can get the puck to the forwards. Not cough it up to the opposing team. If Myers was making 2 million a season, I'd be all for Holland taking the risk. But 5.5? He'd be insane. For Buffalo to get rid of him, they will have to take another bad contract in return.

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

He was also an Avs fan growing up. Played in Ohio instead of Michigan, and doesn't seem to like Kronner too much. I love the kind of player he is. He is a warrior. I just don't see him wanting to come here. Would love it if he did, as long as we get a top 4 dman not named Myers as well.

You say that as if he hasn't done it before.

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

Exactly. Ehrhoff IS a reliable 3-4 dman, which is what this team needs!! Myers MIGHT be a legit top pairing guy some day. Then again, he might become nothing more than a bottom pairing dman with a 5.5 million dollar cap hit. If a team is gonna take on a contract to hit the cap floor, they are at least gonna want a veteran who can give them solid minutes and teach their young players a thing or two. You act as if there is no risk in Myers, as if a trade automatically makes him the second coming of Jesus. Thankfully Holland is the GM, and not you.

None of see really see how Subban being benched for Canada and Montreal has anything to do with Detroit going for Myers.

This thread is turning into arguing over who is/isn't an offensive dman

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

I'm okay with Kesler, I just don't think he'd wanna come here. I get the feeling he cannot stand Detroit. I'd rather Stewart if we get a forward. Edit: But only if we land a top 4 dman as well, as that is the bigger need. A forward would be nice as to have someone to take Alfie's place going forward
  24. marcaractac

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

Nahh, Vancouver wants players who can grow into the type of guys they are trading. Q, one of our highly touted D prospects and a high draft pick for Edler would be my guess (as they want an NHL player back that can help them now). Don't rip on me for god sakes, I'm just trying to speculate. There is a reason I'm an Engineering student and not an NHL GM

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

People complained about J-Bo's cap hit when he was being shopped, yet some are ok with Myers. I don't get it. Would be nice to land both. Just hate to see what it would cost us. I think Ehrhoff and Stewart can be had for cheaper. I think we can take comfort in the fact that Holland will not sell the farm for these guys.
