ECF - (4) Boston Bruins vs. (1) Pittsburgh Penguins

Pens lose!!!! :D:D -
Should be the same as icing. What is the difference really? Face off in your own zone, no line change. Boom. Still sucks for the defending team, but it isn't screwing them over with a cheap penalty either.

God awful -
Trading a 1st round pick for a UFA? A 7th rounder sure. A 6th rounder if you're lucky. Even that would be a conditional pick. But a first? You'd be hard pressed to get a first rounder for Flip (based on this season) at the trade deadline, let alone a month away from a bidding war.

Pittsburgh Penguins, welcome to playing against defense. -
Would love to see Nyquist, Helm and Cleary as the third line next season. Speed, skill, and grit. Would be a very balanced and effective 3rd line

True that! Next season we'll have to round up Wing fan friends and have a viewing party somewhere! Or even regular season games. 50" flatscreen, surround sound, and Center Ice! I think regular minutes in the bottom 6, and 2nd pp unit for a net front presence. Also can be relied on to fill in on the top six when injuries occur. The guy is a warrior, and is smart enough to know at this point of his career to save his best for the playoffs. He is our new Dallas Drake, IMO. Drive us nuts in the season, but step it up when it matters most and willing to put his body on the line. Without Cleary this team wouldnt have gotten past Anaheim. Our current kids have a lot more growing to do. We can't throw another bunch into the fire along with them. Tatar is the nly one who should be a regular along with those who played in the playoffs. Cleary needs to stay. At a lower cost? Yes. But he needs to stay none the less.

Do. The. Math. Its the difference in salary paid out and cap savings of years played on the deal, divided by remaining years left when retired. stop coming up with incorrect numbers on the internet. The math is pretty easy.
-
I really hope we can keep Cleary around.you need guys like him to win in the playoffs.

Helm's desire to play has been his worst enemy these last few months. He just needs to take the time to rest and let his back get better, and not push it every time the pain goes away. Hoping he is ready to go for camp
-
He made some bad rookie mistakes that ended up in our net sure, but he had his share of games where he played great as well. people always pick out the bad and ignore the good. the kid will be fine.

Love how Katie Strang posted it as BREAKING NEWS, as if nobody saw it coming Edit: My guess is that TSN hires him back

Oh for sure. Im definitely proud of the team. Just not proud of how it ended, and im not proud of them "bringing the #1 team" to game 7, because really, chicago brought the wings to game 7. I'm proud of them for going up 3-1, but it's all for naught to only lose the series in 3 straight games. But I'm not gonna knock the team for it, because it is a learning experience for them. We know the kids are gonna be good, we know we have goaltending that we can win with, and our D is coming into its own. Lots to be proud of. Throw Tatar in there next season, get Deke and Helm back, Add someone to the top 6 and I think this team starts looking like a legit threat.

I think Sammy should be the only one. Bert is prob a good extra to have around. He can fill in on any line, and other than his weird injury this season he has been healthy and good for some secondary scoring. Franzen has a decent cap hit, and IMO can be traded without much issue to a bottom feeder. I think Coli proved valuable, and got better and better each game. he can be a good dman to have around if he stays healthy.

Agreed. If this was a back and forth series that went 7, I'd have been proud. But to label this as being proud for taking the #1 team to game 7 is false. the wings had em on the brink and lost 3 in a row. I'm proud of the Wings season overall, just a disappointing end. I said from the start the only chance the Wings had was to get a 3-1 start in this series. check my post history if yall dont believe me lol. I knew once chicago got their intensity level up it was gonna be a s*** show, I just figured we'd have been able to at least grind out one win in those last 3 games. Big let down in the end, exciting season over all. I'm usually never negative at all, but facts are facts. in the end, the Wings choked. But they will be better for it going forward. And hey, at least they didnt choke in Leaf fashion. Amirite?

Because they can't find any issues, and when he feels up to it, he works out, and it acts up again. Just needs to take enough time to let whatever it is to settle down. If it keeps flaring up they would have to figure out what is causing it sooner or later. I used to have a similar situation with my right foot in high school. If I were active and on my feet a lot, it would get excruciatingly painful, to the point i couldn't sleep at night. was in physiotherapy, seeing foot specialists, doctors, and nobody could figure out what was causing pain. My foot was visibly inflamed when it acted up, but no one could figure out the cause. I suffered through this until my mid twenties. If i played hockey, a week of pain before i could get back to walking without a limp. A year ago, I got a desk job, limited my time on my feet, and if im in a situation where i stand still, i put my weight on my left foot (which over the years gave my tendinitis in my left knee). But hey, guess what. 11 months into my desk job? my foot is as good as new, and has been for months now. long term rest works wonders. That is why i have faith that Helm will be ok. it will just take time.

No. If he retired with one year left, they would be on the hook for a one year cap hit of 2.95 million. That link you post shows what his penalty would be if he retired with 2 years left.

I don't think it is a bad contract at all, which is why I think Franzen would make good trade bait. I think buying him out would be idiotic. But getting something for him would be a smart move IMO. Come playoff time, it would be better to have a 15-20 goal scorer who works his ass off each and every night. Franzen had a few years now to try and show that 2008 wasn;t a one time thing. I think he has had enough chances. I don't hate the guy, and wouldn't be upset to see him with the team next season. I just don't think he has the heart or hunger to be a winner any more, and that his best use to the team would be as a tradable asset.
-
I don't think it is a question of if, but a question of when. Seems like it is just gonna take a lot of rest for him to heal up, which could take an undetermined amount of time. My hope is that if it continues to flare up when he pushes it, that they can finally find the issue and fix it, even if it does require surgery. I do think once he is passed this he will be fine, and that it would be something that bothers him for a long time.

Whatever the cap hit is is relative to how many years are left, based on what he is paid vs what his cap hit was over those years. the difference then is split up over the remaining years left once retired. considering franzens cap hit, if he retired with 2 years left (most likely scenario) you take the money he was paid, subtract the total cap hit of the years played, divde that number by 2 and that would be the cap hit for two years. and it would be SOOOOOO much less than this 8.318 million you're coming up with. By my math, and what I've read on this rule, if Franzen retired with 2 years left, Detroit would have a cap hit of about 2.95 million a year for two years. Not the end of the world. If Hank retired with 2 years left, he'd leave us with a cap hit of arounf 5 mil a year for 2 years. As of right now, the Wings saved just over 5 million because of Franzen's cap hit. So if he was traded this summer, then retired with 2 years left. When those two retired years get here, the wings would be responsible for the current cap savings of the first 4 years of his deal, where as the team he is traded to would be on the hook for the cap savings on the last two years.
-
He is the best in the business and we are lucky to have him.
-
No. Because Hossa and Richards are a lot more likely to retire before their deals are up, and make a lot more money. So their respective teams will be on the hook for a lot more in terms of a cap hit than the Wings would be. Even if Franzen and Hank retire when they would start on their 1 million dollar years, the cap hit the Wings would have to endure would be nowhere near what Chicago and NYR would have to deal with.
-
Really hope we keep Cleary around. While I think we do need different options for the top 6, I think he would be great on the 3rd line. He proved his worth to this team in the playoffs. I expect to see Flip test the market, and I really won't be sad to see him go. I'd like to see Franzen traded. Already said why in 2 other threads so I won't get into that here.
-
No concern for this happening with Franzen as he makes a lot less money than Richards or Hossa. Zetterberg makes more yes, but he is signed until he is 40, not 42 like Hossa. I don't think Franzen should be bought out at all. He can be traded. His cap hit isn't high at all, making the term less of an issue. He would be a prime candidate for a team that barely spends above the cap year in and year out.

If you told me we'd have lost to Chicago in game 7 OT, round 2 before the playoff started, I'd have been proud. Don't get me wrong, I'm super excited for the future, and am happy with what was accomplished this season overall, but blowing a 3-1 series lead, I am not happy with that. It is a let down. If it was neck and neck like it was vs anaheim, I'd be nothing but proud. I'm not ripping on the team or anything, I'm so excited about the future, and we have a lot to look forward to. But at the same time there is a lot of work to be done to turn this team into a contender. It isn't gonna happen over night, and I hope everyone is patient, and that people don't see the sky as falling if they hit some rough patches next season.
