Because we'd need a goalie beyond just next season? Can't risk going into summer of 2021 with no NHL goalies on the payroll.

If the alternative is giving a huge contract to Holtby, I'll take another year of Howard. Though there are plenty of UFA backups available that I'd choose over him. I hope somehow Yzerman lands a 1st for AA and manages to nab Askarov with it.

I'm very aware of this. He has been eligible for extension since the 1st of this month.

Extend Bernier, try again summer 2021. Make a trade. Anything instead of signing a goalie to a big contract whose best years are behind him. I mean f***, at least another Howard contract would likely be only one year.

we're facing a defensive team, so at least the 0 part is correct. -
It's more about having competent goaltending as the team improves, especially if they can steal a game every now and again. Markstrom has been really good behind a young, rebuilding team over the last five years.

Not gonna find that younger guy in free agency. Bernie has one year left. After that we have nothing. Markstrom and Lehner are the two youngest, proven pending UFAs in goal at 30 and 29, both which I mentioned first. Getting one of those guys on a 4-5 year deal would work wonders. Solidifies the position and gives time to find a younger person to take the job. Either is an upgrade over Bernier.

Absolutely. Nielson and Abby should both be heavily shopped at 50% salary retention. Take what you can get for them. Addition by subtraction. It's the roster spots they take up that hurts, not the cap. -
More or less agree with this. I like the odds of Veleno moving up to awesome status. He's looked a lot more confident since the WJC, hopefully he continues that.

Halak is another option. That dude has a history of playing well when getting shelled.
