The Holiday tradition: 2016 Draft thoughts.....

And where are you pulling 5-6 years from? You have no clue. 4 years is probably the max, and possibly as few as 2 years depending on his development. Kids are coming straight from college more and more often. Larkin, Dekeyser came straight from college. Cholowski was the fastest rising prospect in this year's draft. He already has good size for an 18-year-old, and will add on within a year or two. You're off your rocker if you think Gauthier, Jones, or Rubtsov will jump right into the NHL. They'll more than likely need at least a season or two of development, maybe even 3. They're not locks to be anything above top 6 players. "Kieffer Bellows is a pure shooter with question marks about the rest of his game. Max Jones is a nasty left winger with a size/speed combination and perhaps a 50-50 shot at either becoming a top-six power forward -- a better-skating version of the Scott Hartnell mold -- or else having a career as a role player somewhere in the range of the careers of former first-round picks Raffi Torres, Ben Eager or current Washington Capitals winger Tom Wilson. A lot of NHL scouts soured on Julien Gauthier's game as the 2015-16 season progressed. Questions started to fly about his adaptability to the NHL despite being a good finisher with a huge frame and excellent strength (although not very consistent in applying it)." A little intel on Jordan Sambrook: Smooth-skating two-way defenceman who displays solid creativity and offensive instincts, as well as a strong defensive game. Can play lengthy shifts due to his conservative style without the puck, and can be relied upon in all situations. Mobile with and without the puck, and could even become a bit quicker. His size allows him to be physically assertive and protect the puck well. All-in-all, a defenceman who has the potential to become a well-rounded all-around player that can log a lot of ice-time. Everyone loves to complain and play arm-chair GM when, in reality, they'd muck it all up and probably produce garbage teams. You can't please some fools.

    Detroit trades Datsyuk to Arizona

Well, that may be the case as Yzerman has said that he will consider doing a sign and trade with Stamkos, giving him 8 years instead of the 7 he'd get from another team and getting an asset back for him.

Well and the other scenario is if we decide to trade Nyquist or Tatar in a package for Shattenkirk, Trouba, Fowler, Hamilton, Subban (long-shot), Dumba.... Other outside options could include Brodin, M. Staal...

The Holiday tradition: 2016 Draft thoughts.....

Well the nice thing about Cholowski, as Holland mentioned already, is that he has up to 4 years to season in college. He already improved nicely over the past season and now takes a step up to college hockey. Yes, we need high-quality d-men in the near future, but it'll be nice to have a kid ripening at the college level (also no worry about having to have him signed). Also, in terms of having a d-man who could step in sooner.... I feel there were only really 3 players who fit that criteria; Juolevi, Sergachev, and Bean, and they all were drafted before the 16 spot. I don't think Holland and Co. were as excited about Chychrun as he had injury issues as well as struggled with his play this past season. Time will tell if he turns it around and time will tell how Cholowski develops. We tend to draft well through the later rounds, so let's see how we handle our 2nd round picks and beyond them. Also, I feel if this move allows us to get Stamkos, long-term, it was well worth it. Chychrun is not expected to be any more than a top 4 d-man, same as Cholowski. One just might need a little more time to develop/ripen.

What do people think about Vanek? He's 32, I know, and had a couple of off-seasons with Minnesota, but even Minnesota's all-stars were off it seems. If we could get Vanek for 1 or 2 years, at an inexpensive rate, would you pull the trigger?

Seriously, if we lose on Stamkos, we can add two solid forwards and possibly trade for a top tier d-man. Either way, we're in a good position heading in to July 1.

I think if he's attached to that number, you throw that in there as a possibility for him when coming here. He's that caliber of a player.

Right, it'll suck if we miss on Stamkos. You certainly can't count on it, but we can also pick up Okposo, Staal, Lucic, Backes, Ladd, Erikkson, Brouwer, Nielsen.... And Holland has at least made it sound like he'll be active in trades as well, so there is that option, too. My hope is they trade Nyquist in a package for a solid 1-2 d-man, and (if they miss on Stammer) sign Okposo and Backes/Ladd.

Nothing like 10 million tied up in two goalies with really nowhere for Howard to be unloaded to. I was honestly hoping this deal would happen before the Datsyuk contract got traded... Oh well.

Craig CustanceVerified account ‏@CraigCustance 3h3 hours ago Several teams have been in contact with Detroit on Pavel Datsyuk's contract. Red Wings can expand the field if they take money back. Craig CustanceVerified account ‏@CraigCustance 3h3 hours ago Not sure Detroit has a lot of appetite to take salary back. My sense is they're most interested in moving Datsyuk if going big in UFA. Bob McKenzieVerified account ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 4h4 hours ago DET in no hurry to dump Datsyuk cap hit. Wings know asset cost but don't want to pay the price until they're certain they need the cap room. Well that's where we stand, as far as the "insiders" are aware.

Saw it on twitter somewhere that there are a lot of teams talking to Detroit about Datsyuk contract. There is a possibility where we retain salary while holding on to our top prospects. Please let that be true, if it has to be that way. Also, wonder if Holland is thinking that he'll expose Howard to Vegas next off-season, but there is no guarantee they'll take him anyway. Holland needs to be selling the poo out of Howard to Calgary. Please let Bishop and Fleury fall through, so they have no choice but to make the trade with us!
