I'd vote for the split thread idea. If some conversation evolves into something else and you really, really don't want it to continue in that thread, then why not just grab all the posts and stick them in a new thread (or an appropriate existing thread) with a link to said thread?
-
Maybe it'd be possible to let the person know before you change it. It would give them a chance to rework or reword a post in a way that would be more suitable.

I don't really have a problem with people getting offended though. If someone thinks that gays should be stoned to death wherever you find them, I'll be the first person to say I'm offended by that. But I wouldn't tell somebody else they aren't allowed to voice that opinion. I would try to have a conversation with them and try to change their mind. Just silencing their voice is never going to result in a discussion that can change their view.

First of all, Thanks for replying and trying to clear some stuff up! And I'd also like to apologize for my part in whatever problems I've been contributing to. I've on occasion been acting in ways that I would never act like if I was person to person with you guys. That sounds great. But typically in a situation like this you wouldn't be having a conversation with a few people only to have some random person jump in in the middle of it and start saying "You guys started off talking about this, and now you're talking about that. That isn't allowed!" "This topic has been discussed at length already (possibly by people that aren't you), I'm putting a stop to this discussion and you guys can't talk about it anymore!" "No you can't discuss that, move your conversation to something else" "Oh, this topic again! I'm sick of reading about this (and I'll just assume that since I'm tired of it no other fan of this team would want to discuss it anymore either), I'll just gonna pretend you didn't want to talk about and shove it back to the bottom of the barrel!" "I know you just spent 15 minutes developing this well thought out and nicely worded opinion about something, but I'm now going to say it's invalid and nobody will ever hear it." None of that would happen in your laid back bar scenario. And if it did I imagine you would be extremely frustrated (As many of us have been when this kind of stuff happens here) that somebody just started controlling/demanding the manner in which your dialog continued, or even putting an outright stop to it.

1: "Datsyuk has 'X' amount of takeaways this season, and 'Y' amount led to goals" 2: "Datsyuk Howard has 'X' amount of takeaways giveaways this season, and 'Y' amount led to goals" EDIT: I'll go one more. 3. "Datsyuk Smith has 'X' amount of takeaways giveaways this season, and 'Y' amount led to goals" I really don't see the problem here. How many people are going to throw a fit about the first one and claim it isn't a real stat? I doubt many would. If you are fine with two of those stats, but claim the second one is just 'made-up'.....you might have a bias!

It looks like you just scored in every category. So congrats for the irony award.

There was nothing after the popcorn post....until it got deleted and it rubbed a couple of us the wrong way because as was stated, it seems to happen quite frequently here. I think what you just posted here is part of the problem in that there is no rhyme or reason to why things get deleted. (Maybe to you there is but certainly not on the outside) Look, thanks for trying to clarify and everything. If you gotta go we'll continue this later. I think a lot of us have had some pent up anger over this for a while. Maybe Matt can stop in if he gets a chance to kinda monitor the situation and throw in his 2 cents, hopefully we can get some productive changes made. EDIT: I like this rule. It's pretty much what I was trying to say in my OP (of the other thread) and which kinda set me off when it wasn't followed.

Look I've had countless posts just disappear on me. Seriously I've lost track, it's that many. And from what I've read other posters have had similar issues. It isn't an isolated issue, it happens all the time. And again from other posters as well as my own experience, other forums aren't like this at all. It just doesn't happen. Except here.

I don't have a problem with keeping threads on topic (to an extent. If a conversation evolves then let it evolve. That might be the only exception I'd want). The problem is Mods deleting harmless posts. I don't think it's too much of an exaggeration to say "it's discouraged to post opinions that a mod will simply disagree with" because you might hit a nerve and they'll start deleting posts. Regular posters shouldn't have to walk on eggshells around Mods simply to post their opinion of something. Claiming that the mods are "just regular posters" is all well and nice, but it just isn't true on this forum. That's a problem.
-
Are you kidding? Did you miss what just happened that prompted the opening of this thread? Or do I need to link you back to it to "cite a reference" EDIT: Also it's kinda hard to link back to something when it no longer exists because a mod already came through and scrubbed the record clean.
-
I think it's pretty evident that this just isn't the case. On every other forum I visit that would be an accurate description. But not here. And I'm obviously not the only one who thinks so.

Maybe there is a problem with the forum rules. Can that get discussed without getting posts deleted and threads locked? You know damn well what we're here to discuss

I think Howie is a nice guy, I really do! He's played in the NHL for like what, 5-6 season? That's a major accomplishment! But he's 30 years old, it's not like he's going to be getting any better from here on out. His still atrocious puck handling skills show he isn't really committed to trying to improve (I mean how hard would it be to spend 5-10 mins passing the puck back and forth with someone a couple times a week??). I don't think there's any reason to continue to have our goalie of the future playing in the AHL just for the hell of it, especially if he's the better option to win us games. Who cares if he's currently in GR? Are they barred from calling him up? I'm mean sure give Howie a little bit more time to see what happens with him, but if it just continues like this I'd rather just have Mrazek start getting some serious NHL time. Why not?
-
Consistently mediocre maybe..... I didn't get to watch any of the preseason/camp stuff but from what I read it sounded like at least Babs was impressed with Mrazek. I hope they get him in some games soon.
-
Dude had all ******* summer to work on his stick handling, something he admitted he wanted to start doing more. Either he didn't practice it at all or he just f***in sucks. Get Mrazek in there!!

HAHAHAHA!!! Jimmy is BACK!!!

He'll still be signing Cleary 'when he's 64'.

Signed Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses

Still don't understand the difference, do you? Again, I was bending over backwards here. First he used the word speculating so I used the word speculating to answer him (and even explained that it wasn't mindless; that it comes from other known info. But hey, go ahead & just keep ignoring that!). Then he used reaching, so I used reaching to answer him. Simple as that. -
Confused on the direction of this team going forward

Maybe he wants to build through the draft like you said, but that obviously isn't happening. If the plan is to build through the draft and not overpriced FA, then maybe he should let the draftees play and not the overpriced FA like Cleary and Quincy. -

Where did I say that speculation isn't reaching? Did you not understand the difference between blind speculation and extrapolation from existing facts? In fact I didn't think anything I said was controversial & was being generous saying it was speculation in the first place. -

I don't know. I guess because these are the things I'm upset about.... I mean if I said he got resigned because he and Ken want to bond over their love of pokemon, then sure you would be right that I was just 'making s*** up' to be pissed about. I really don't think I'm reaching nearly as much as you are suggesting I am. Not even close. In fact I didn't think I was reaching at all on most of those points I made. -

Of course you missed the point about extrapolation and it not being baseless. Besides, speculation is part of being a fan. It's what happens after the GM puts out cryptic messages. And Harold you really aren't sure whether Cleary's agent would bring that up? After Holland indicates that he kinda sorta didn't really want to sign him, but loyalty yadda yadda...That's you're honest opinion? There probably isn't a sports agent who wouldn't at the very least try and use that if their client wanted another deal (I know more 'speculation') -

That's just opinion & speculation on your part -
I would go for this, besides having McCollum be the back up after Howie is gone. Maybe McC will have improved enough, but if not we could always sign a free agent back-up. Gus is only 29 so he could still be a viable back up at that time. Just not sure where he'd go in the intermittent season of the Howie/Mrazec year.

"Of course I can explain what's wrong with this, I just don't want to! I'll just say it's made up cuz i'm a mod" Well done harold, well done. Sure it's speculation. But it isn't baseless. It's called extrapolation and its amazing the amount of info you can get by it. You should try it sometime! Answer me this: Do you really think he turned down a 3 year deal from Detroit because his heart was in Detroit? Does that make sense to you? - doesn't make sense to me Did he turn down multi-year offers from multiple teams (or even 1 team) to come back? Or was it a tryout with one team with no guarantees? -Indications are it was the latter (I'll admit I'm not positive as its been claimed both ways, still alot of confusion about this) Do you think this handshake deal has nothing to do with this signing? -Quotes from Holland strongly indicate it does Do you really think his agent was just going to forget about said deal? -Wouldn't be much of an agent if he did. Of course he's going to reach out to the GM about it. And please tell me what kind of positive leadership the guy is bringing to the table and (if there is any) how that outweighs his on ice performances. -If they need his locker room presence so bad then they could pay him to sit in the locker room. Pay him a million buck for a few years to be 'President of Team Morale'. No need to sign him to a playing contract.
