Mrazek's "Farewell to the Joe" Mask for 2016/2017

Damn, it's hard trying to keep track of who hates me & my 'abrasive personality' around here haha I honestly wasn't sure if this was sarcastic or not when I first read it. Then I read this and thought I might have hit a nerve (no pun intended, but damn I'll take it anyway!) with the 'political talk' by mentioning that Pavel was in fact born in the Soviet Union (and the not so fun fact). Considering its frowned upon to even mention that Konstintinov and company actual had to defect from and sneak out of the Soviet Union to come and play here. That and the fact that NHLers come from all over the Northern Hemisphere shhh! If you don't talk about it it's like it never even happened But man oh man, did I go down the rabbit's hole of endless wikipedia articles after reading that the house where the executions took place was ominously named 'The House of Special Purpose'. Anyway, Mrazek's mask.....AAANND We're back to our normal LGW's programming.

Mrazek's "Farewell to the Joe" Mask for 2016/2017

Well it was still the Soviet Union when he was born. Fun Fact (Or Not So Fun): His hometown, Yekaterinburg, is where the Tsar Nicholas II and his family (including the now infamous Anastasia) were exiled and later executed. Damn, that series had some of the best fan signs I've ever seen just due to their intentional banal nature. "STAMKOS WEARS SOCKS WITH SANDALS"

This should go to the Hall of Fame when the season is over. Just seems to have that iconic feel to it.

    Fans rank front offices....Wings 21st

Well these fans are supposed to decide how much confidence they would have in all of the the other management IF they were in charge of the team they root for. Like we all like the Red Wings. So how much confidence would you have in, say, Lou Lamoriello and Brendan Shanahan and the rest of the Leafs management if they were in charge of the Red Wings in place of Ken Holland & Co. So then you'd give a 1-10 ranking in those categories. I guess you'd have to take into account that those guys would no longer be under the Toronto media spotlight so they might do a little better in a different market... Maybe it's just me, but the way they went about getting these rankings just seems to be a little...off?

    Fans rank front offices....Wings 21st

actually now I'm not sure how they did it. Here's the link to the original article titled: How much confidence does each NHL fan base have in their front office? http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/how-much-confidence-does-each-nhl-fan-base-have-in-their-front-office-a-ranking-of-all-30-teams/ So the title makes it sound like each team had a few people respond to the survey, and not that 200 people took the survey about every team. But it's usually an editor that makes the title of the article and not the writer. But if it was only fans of the team that ranked that team, that would equal about a 6and 2/3rds sample size per team. Which is a ridiculously low sample size From the article: So it sounds like just 200 random hockey fans...

    Fans rank front offices....Wings 21st

Yeah, obviously you'd like more than a 200 sample size. And who knows how those 200 fans got picked. On top of that, I'm not really sure how many fans would have the workings and up-to-date info on all the departments of all 30 teams to be able to make an informed ranking in all those categories (Beyond the Wings, I don't know how many other teams I could actually comment on, let alone give a score of 1-10 in six different categories for each team). That being said, I still think these came out being about right EDIT: Just for anyone wondering, the categories (with the Wings' rank) were: Roster Building..........21st Cap Management......19th Draft/Develop..............9th Trading......................21st Free Agency..............22nd Vision.........................21st (Any mods wanna copy these to the original post, then delete this question from my post??)

    Fans rank front offices....Wings 21st

21st....sounds about right. How the turn tables....turn. Look, I don't like what Kenny's been doing lately. And there are plenty of people who (with good reason) think that Yzerman in one of if not the best GM in the game right now. But I am kinda wary of saying things like "If only Steve could have taken over the Wings..." The situations are quite different to be making a GM-to-GM comparison, as if all the great moves that he made in Tampa (and the moves Nill makes in Dallas for that matter) would have worked out in Detroit. It's a different organization, the teams have different players in different stages of their careers and contracts. They have different assets and different prospects, ect... I know they are both under a lot of pressure, it comes with the job. But I think it was probably a good thing for Yzerman's GM career and development that he wasn't under the extreme pressure of being the GM of the team to which he was an icon for 2 decades. I don't know that he would have handled things here the same way he handled them in Tampa (just to be clear, he might have done things the same, he might not have. I just don't know, just wanted to say it again), But I'm guessing that being with a different organization would make it a lot easier to manage the team without having to worry about his legacy as a Red Wing. That being said, I still wish he was working for the Wings. The guy is very intelligent, thorough, adaptable (even back to his playing days), negotiated his last few contracts by himself, doesn't let emotion get in the way of what's best for the team (Drouin, St. Lous), ect.. Is he the best GM in the league? I don't know. Is he in the top 5 (maybe even top 3)? I'd say yes, absolutely. And where is Holland? 21st. Right where he belongs.

    Wings Sign G Jared Coreau

Right on. It just seems like we're in the same situation again where we might end up losing a "Kyle Quincy" and keeping the "Derek Meech" of the group. But yeah for the most part, our loses through waivers have been very minor. Some guys I'm sure it'd have been nice to keep them, especially when you see they are doing well for whoever picked them up, but they weren't going to get a chance to play here anyway if they couldn't make the roster (Though who the Wings have decided to keep on their final roster in recent years has been a head-scratcher when you've got guys ready to step in and continue their development)

    Wings Sign G Jared Coreau

We draft Quincy late in the 4th round. We spend 3 years developing him in Grand Rapids (He play in 13 games for the Wings during that time). Then... when he's out of options, we lose Quincy to waivers (While keeping Derek Meech and Brett Lebda). Fine, whatever. As you said guys get put on waivers all the time. But the story doesn't end there. The Kings pick him up off waivers and that same season he led their team's defense in scoring. He does well for Colorado too. Then... He gets traded to Steve Yzerman and the Lightning. Moments later, Yzerman traded Quincy to Detroit (who originally lost him for nothing through waivers) for.....A 1st round draft pick! Losing him to waivers (and then getting him back on the team) cost us a 4th round pick, 3 years of development AND a 1st round pick. Losing a 4th rounder and 3 years development sucks Losing a 4th rounder and 3 years development sucks when you keep Derek Meech and Brett Lebda on top of it. Losing a 4th rounder and 3 years development sucks when you keep Derek Meech and Brett Lebda on top of it, and then on top of that have to spend a 1st rounder to get the 4th rounder back! Suffice it to say I'm a little worried about Hollands ability to make the right decision about who gets waived and who stays on the team (for now). Of course all that could have been avoided if the Wings didn't bury guys in the minors and wait til 5 guys all lose their waiver eligibility at the same time to make a decision. I know hindsight is 20/20 but this kind of incompetence really pisses me off I was gonna say something about this and now I don't remember what it was....
  12. I think there were a good number of Holland Apologists around a couple years ago (I'm thinking of like 2010-2014) Kinda hard to hate on a guy one year removed from the Finals and two years removed from a Cup. But by 2010 we all knew Lids' playing days were numbered and Kenny didn't seem prepared (still hasn't really fixed it); he made bad signings and re-signings (Sammy, Cleary, Cleary again....); losing Quincy through waivers and then trading a 1st round pick to reacquire him; ect... There were some who called it like it was, but there was a lot of pushback. In the past two years I'd say there's been a slow but steady move towards being more critical

Official 2016 Detroit Red Wings Offseason Thread

Coming out of a short posting retirement for this.... HELM?!?!??! MILLER?!?! MARCHENKO???? SERIOUSLY?! OK, I like Marchenko, so whatever.... And Miller is a good on the PK (or so I'm told; is there really no one else in our system that can do it well?) But HELM for FIVE YEARS??? I'm calling it now, Darren Helm becomes the new Dan Cleary. Once this five year contract is up, we (the fans) will be glad it's finally over. But it won't be. He'll sign another one year deal with the promise of more one year deals and everything positive that he did for the team will be overshadowed by the bulls***. This is all assuming Holland will still be the GM. Which he will be. Because he's "The Greatest GM" (On that note I am impressed he got rid of Datsyuk's contract, though it might end up being all for naught) Anyway, Bye Everyone!!! I'ma get outta here before I break the Forum Rulz (Assuming I made it through this post without breaking any )

He was a fighter til the end and got a few extra years of life with the stem cell treatments. It's certainly sad but also relieving knowing that he won't continue to suffer

Did you guys see Kessel steal that guy's (Bonino?) goal? It was trickling towards the nets with nobody around but Kessel and he put it in himself before the other guy's shot went in. I know it's the Finals so of course you have to do it but i still thought it was funny.

Maybe pressure from the fans as well. It looked like they were taking a beating on their facebook posts. But lets be realistic, they aren't going to change it. I guess I'll give them props for that massive bait and switch they're trying to pull off. Gotta take some balls.

If a poster is "too argumentative or aggressive" for somebody's taste then why doesn't that person utilize the 'ignore' feature? Problem solved. And why would 'team bashing' be against the rules? Perhaps the team deserves bashing... If you're only going to allow non-negative posts and this team continues it's downward trend, you're not going to have any posters left. Imagine if the fans in Edmonton or Toronto or Buffalo weren't allowed to be negative in any way.... Also, you can quit pretending you want the site to feel like this... ...because you really don't. I can guarantee you that if there were even just twenty people sitting in a bar watching our latest playoff games, you would have heard the phrases "This team sucks" "F*** this team" "What a joke" from multiple people at multiple times. If you don't want to hear or read things like that then you'll either have to watch all the games on the campus of an Ivy League school (where those phrases probably wouldn't be used by some one with a bigger vocabulary that the average LGW contributor) or you can watch the game by yourself. "This team sucks" or "Errosion again!!!" is probably people's honest assessment of the situation and I'd rather have that than nothing. At least I'd be able to see if anybody else agrees with me or if they don't. After all, isn't that the point of forming an online community?

So is Matt OK with his Mods threatening to lock a playoff GDT because people weren't posting their thoughts about the game the way the mod thought they should?

    LGW Moderator Problems

I guess I just don't get it. I mean you guys say you want this place to be like a bunch of people sitting around, drinking a beer and discussing the Wings. But you really don't. Look at this post. You've got mods threatening to lock the Gameday Thread in the middle of a playoff game just because he personally doesn't like the content people are posting or they aren't expressing their disappointment the 'proper' way. Imagine if we really were sitting around in a Buffalo Wild Wings watching a game when all of a sudden someone started threatening to turn all the TVs off and dumping everyone's drinks out just because people were saying "this team sucks".

    Potentially new GMs

Yzerman was just quoted as saying he hoped he was still the GM of Tampa in 20 years. As for Holland (sorry, but he's going to come up when discussion the GM position and frankly kinda stupid to demand that it doesn't), listing all his past accomplishments as reasons why he deserves the job now is kinda like listing all of Zetterberg's stats from 2005 to 2012 to justify his top line minutes in 2016.
