No one would even beat anyone up to get Andersson. That said, this is not the best time to lose him. I'm on board with moving Abby to C and bringing up Pulkkinen. What other options do we have really? Moving Franzen to C and breaking up the only legit NHL line we have.
  2. 3 scoring lines thanks. There needs to a constant stream of young guys taking over as older guys get raises though. Hard to do but at least in the near future we should be able to have 3 scoring lines.

3/9 GDT: Red Wings at Rangers

A win: "This team could be a contender when we're healthy!" A loss: "We suck, we have no good players and everything is awful"

    Injury Updates

Eh, Gustavsson's been having recurring groin-problems as long as he's been in the NHL. He can't stay healthy enough to ever be a #1. Howard would get the start tomorrow anyway so it's not a big deal, hopefully this time Gus won't be out long.

Weiss - who would take him next season and does he have a full NTC

We can still use a regular buyout on Weiss. It would be the worst case scenario as we would be given a cap penalty for the remainder of his deal, but if the cap goes up by a lot and we have plenty of room it could be a way out if Weiss completely sucks. I certainly agree it's too early to give up on him though.

Holland has been after both Edler and Ehrhoff. The price for Kesler was in the realm of Nyquist+Mantha+1st, and the price for Edler was supposedly even higher. I didn't like giving up Jarnkrok but he's not in the same realm as Nyquist and Mantha.

UFA/RFA Re-Signing, What Does Everyone Get?

Neither of them have mentioned Quincey by name this season.

Weiss - who would take him next season and does he have a full NTC

Can't trade him unless he comes back and shows he can play, at which point we might not want to trade him. But time is REALLY running out for him. And with a setback in his recovery one has to wonder if he can really come back and be 100% healthy and contribute right away instead of needing 10 games to get up to speed. With Legwand we see a player come in and be effective right away. No excuses needed about not being familiar in the system. This makes me think Weiss is either just not the same player he was, or a completely wrong fit for our team. Could be a rough contract to get rid of.

3/7 GDT: Devils 4 at Red Wings 7

Well... no reason to break them up right now, but I wonder if they can keep it up. They still don't look great at times, they're a slow bunch when they get stuck in the defensive zone. But all 3 are good at shielding the puck along the boards and they also all got decent vision and hands making them an okay offensive threat. I wish Glendening could stop being an offensive black hole because just a little bit of offense from him would make him such a solid player. I wonder if Ferraro or Callahan can steal his job next year.

UFA/RFA Re-Signing, What Does Everyone Get?

Only 2 games in but I already like Legwand much more than Weiss. Weiss has a lot of proving himself to do otherwise we should explore the possibility of moving him or worst case, buying him out. Keep Leggy on a 2-3 year deal at 4-5 mil. Alfie would be nice to keep at a reduced paycheck. But I think there's a posssibility he retires. I also want to wait and see how he plays out the rest of this season. I see him as a very valuable piece if we make the playoffs, but right now he's pretty invisible and without Pavel to feed him on the PP he's not been as effective there either. Bertuzzi, Cleary and Sammy gone. Bert's playing dangerously okay right now, but Kenny better not get any ideas. We need to lose these guys. Dekeyser I'd like to see on one of those bridge contracts. Something like 3-4 years, maybe "overpaid" at first but hopefully a steal at the end of the deal. Lock him up at least. Tatar is a no-brainer. Give him what he wants. Gustavsson I'm iffy on. He's been getting things done this season, but he's also unreliable health-wise and Mrazek is probably very close if not ready to be the backup. I don't know. For as bad as he's been, and as much as I've hated him... he hasn't been awful lately. Past 10-20 games he's been mostly solid actually. I hope Holland looks at every possible way to upgrade our defense, but I wouldn't jump off a bridge if we sign Q to a 1-2 year deal for fairly cheap (no NTC!!) while we move Kindl and bring up Marchenko/Almqvist. Ideally our kids will develop if we can't bring in outside help, improving our defense anyway.

Patrick Eaves First Game as a Predator

Wish nothing but the best for him. Wouldn't mind having him around but I'd rather see him get a chance to be a regular somewhere else than be scratched with us.

Please no. That would suck so much. Would also make the Legwand trade make even more sense if that's the word that Holland got from the doctors just before the deadline.

I give him a break this season... hopefully an off-season without back problems will give him time to get his strength and conditioning back to where it needs to be to stay healthy. If his next season is anything like this one...

3/6 GDT: Avs 3 at Red Wings 2 (OT) Sorry Nick.

We've been relying on our centers A LOT defensively for years. Our defense isn't great but with good puck carrying centers it looks miles better. Sadly I more and more start to feel like Filppula was a bad loss for us. Offensively he was questionable but he fit our defense very nicely with his ability to skate the puck up ice.

3/6 GDT: Avs 3 at Red Wings 2 (OT) Sorry Nick.

Great game imo. We played an awful OT, but we were unlucky not to win in regulation. I hope Gustavsson gets some more starts the rest of the way. Howard for some reason isn't getting it done in most games. Never a big save at a key moment.

Red Wings have Recalled Pulkkinen from Grand Rapids

Wonder if he'll play tomorrow instead of Bert since it's back to back. Hope he gets a chance and does well.

3/6 GDT: Avs 3 at Red Wings 2 (OT) Sorry Nick.

Gonna be a great night, hopefully the team can show up and get a win for Lids. 2 games in hand on the teams behind us, if we win them we will really create some much needed separation.

Legwand to Detroit for Eaves, Jarnkrok + cond 3rd/2nd

Yeah I remember a few years ago when Calgary had kids like Nyquist, Tatar, Sheahan, Dekeyser, Mrazek, Oullet and Sproul coming up. Oh wait, I don't. I don't like losing Jarnkrok but the future of the organization didn't hang on him. Janmark is comparable and Sheahan's already looking like a good #3 C at worst.

21 games to make it 23 years

Sure he was a highly ranked prospect. One of my favorites. But in most people's eyes, and certainly in the eyes of management/Babcock, Sheahan has jumped ahead of him this season. Putting him into 'expendable' territory. Especially if he didn't want to do another year in GR, which he 100% would have had to do in our system. I'm sad to see him go but we should wait and see both what Legwand brings and what Calle actually can do if he gets to see the NHL ice this season.

    Injury Updates

And if he's not good after 3 weeks it's surgery and that would be his season I'm assuming. So not good. Hopefully Weiss can return sooner rather than later and be a solid contributor. Sink or swim for this team. Whether we make the playoffs or miss them, I'm sure the experience of coping without Z and D will be good in the long run.

Legwand to Detroit for Eaves, Jarnkrok + cond 3rd/2nd

I'm sure he would have said "yeah we knew about that, hahaha suck it Nashville" if he had known about it... Several people have reported that they have heard about Jarnkrok wanting to go back to sweden rather than play another year in the AHL. I'm sure Holland & Co. knew about that.

21 games to make it 23 years

Dear god people are freaking out! Jarnkrok was not a top center prospect. Maybe once upon a time he was, maybe, but he hasn't had the development most had hoped. Good prospect, certainly not a top prospect. And this is coming from a huge Jarnkrok fan. As for the playoffs, if we make it we will most likely get Z back. Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Sheahan Franzen-Legwand-Nyquist Tatar-Weiss-Alfredsson Abdelkader-Helm-Miller Yes our defense has holes and Howard has to get his game together, but that forward lineup imo would not be an easy one for ANYONE to match up with.

Legwand to Detroit for Eaves, Jarnkrok + cond 3rd/2nd

Like I said the Isles had a weak position to trade Vanek. No one would give up much for a guy that they knew 100% had to be traded. And we didn't need Vanek, we needed a center. Eaves has zero value, and if rumors of Jarnkrok's desires to go back to Sweden had reached other GMs he probably didn't have much value either. The trade isn't as bad as it serms if you settle down a bit and look at it rationally.

Legwand to Detroit for Eaves, Jarnkrok + cond 3rd/2nd

The Isles had a very, very weak position. Everyone knew that not trading Vanek would be a disaster for them. That impacts prices.
  25. dat's sick

Legwand to Detroit for Eaves, Jarnkrok + cond 3rd/2nd

I don't like the trade either, but if Jarnkrok said to Holland that he wouldn't play another year in GR, trading him was the only option. Z, Dats, Weiss, Sheahan and Glendening are all ahead on the Center depth chart. Even Andersson is. The return is not great but I'll wait and see how Legwand does. We needed help and the others who would've helped us (Edler, Ehrhoff, Kesler) would all have cost us better prospects. I'm one of Jarnkrok's biggest fans but even I realize he didn't have a future with the Wings if he didn't want to be stuck in GR another year or two. Can't blame him, he's good enough to be given a shot in the NHL or be a star in the SHL. We get a veteran center that just might actually help us, and if we re-sign him we could have this next season: Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Alfredsson Franzen-Legwand-Nyquist Tatar-Weiss-Abdelkader Helm-Sheahan-Miller Or some-such. Imo, good stuff.
