    LGW Fit Club

Have fun, and get back on track on Monday. I used to do that when I lost a bunch of weight years ago... I would be strict with myself all week long, and then do basically whatever I wanted on the weekends, although I was still pretty careful. I do like margueritas, which are probably one of the worst drinks around, for sugar and pure evil-ness. I still lost weight, because I was in a groove with exercise and proper diet. You can't have "no fun" and stay strict with yourself forever, right? I was positively medieval on myself when I attended WW. I called them the "scale gestapos" and absolutely refused to gain even 1/4 of a pound during the 10 months it took me to lose 80+ pounds. I lost every week -- not going to pay them to see that number increase on the scale, no sirree. I need that sort of discipline back, but maybe I won't be so mean to myself this time. I didn't touch a chip, alcohol or sugar for a year and a half. Hard to live here in Austin without chips 'n salsa and a frosty marg once in a while. But I think one can still do those things, in moderation, if the exercise and diet otherwise are on track. I hope!! Training session today and Saturday with my trainer. He is very nice, but sure does think I am more capable than I probably really am. I will get there!

I much prefer free weights to the machines, although a couple of them (like the seated row and the bar pulldown), I really like. I agree, also as a girl, I have trouble controlling the heavier weights, but my trainer explained why he hands me 20 pound weights when I would have been more conservative. He says once the muscles learn the pattern, I will have better control over the movements. I hope so! Yay, me!! I rocked that elliptical machine last night! What a sweatball I was, but it was fun...

thanks for the daily plate link, that is a good site! You're right about the food diary, too. My issue is that I eat too little, and my metabolism is wonky, due to a lifetime of dieting. I am trying to retrain myself to eat more often, but still watch what I eat and how much. I lost 83 pounds on WW more than ten years ago, and have kept it off since ... except for the 20 pounds which have crept up on me gradually. I joined a gym two weeks ago, and hired a trainer. It's pretty clear I can't do this alone, so I got help. I realize that I didn't gain the weight quickly, so I don't expect to lose it quickly. I am pretty sure the weight training (free weights, never have done those before), plus my daily power walks (3+ miles) and my beloved elliptical and not-so-beloved stairmaster, will eventually make a dent in my excess baggage. At any rate, I believe the weight/strength training is good for bone density, right? That's what I read, anyway. Besides losing weight, I just want to be stronger. Wish me luck!

    Emery owns his idiocy

Could just be words and good coaching from an agent, who knows? Good luck, Ray. If you mean what you're saying, you will re-invent yourself and perhaps some NHL team will give you a shot at redemption. It's a fine line between quirky and distraction, when you act like Emery has done in Ottawa. If you're going to be quirky and crazy, you'd better have the goods on the ice to back it up. Dasvidanya, NHL, otherwise.

    Forsberg facing months of rehab...again!

Enough already. His body clearly is telling him to hang 'em up -- but the truly great ones have a harder time walking (or hobbling) away from the game they love. I despised Patty Wahhh, but he did know when it was time to retire from the NHL, to his credit. Forsberg will have a starring role in Swedish hockey for the rest of his life, in a role of his choosing, I suspect. If he can't end his career as an Av, he should be content to stay in Sweden and pass his knowledge on to the next generation.

    Favorite Goalie Mask

My favorite, too. I loved the warrior head-dress Martin sported in Chicago, a subtle change from the Roman Senator helmet in Ottawa. Wonder what Lalime's going to do with Marvin's headgear in Buffalo? I envision him incorporating the hat Fred Flintstone wore in the Loyal Order of Water Buffalos meetings, fuzzy blue with horns. I can see it now!!

Burke defies Bettman, accuses Lowe of tampering

I would hope by now that everyone has figured out what most of us have known for a long time... Burke is a whining fool. Thank you, Lord, for Kenny Holland. Amen.

    Ray Emery Signs In Russia

that synopsis of playing in Russia is a horror show, in anyone's book. I always liked Ray-Ray but like many, shake my head over his antics. If this doesn't teach him that he had it good with Ottawa, then nothing will. Hope he grows up and rebuilds his NHL career.

    Zetterberg just left my office

To the OP... that's awesome!! What fun, good for you!! Z -- as in Zetterberg -- is the best! OT: Pavel does not look like a serial killer or anything of the sort. Ya'll be nice, now...

    Bertuzzi a Flame

Don't trip over the goalie, Bert. Good luck with him, Flames.

Hossa's agent is floored by his client's behaviour

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Chances are, no matter what Hossa does, someone will be unhappy about it.

Hossa's agent is floored by his client's behaviour

Hossa's rationale for choosing Detroit sounds vaguely familiar. Winter's seen this before in his clientele, and I doubt he was particularly surprised, in truth. I also doubt that he's upset about "losing" money on the deal. Good for Hossa, for doing what he felt was right for his career and himself, and lucky Detroit. Hopefully, he will like being a Red Wing so much, he will stay more than one season.

    Jagr signs in Russia

ditto what you said. Best of luck, Jaro. One of my favorites, hope he does well there.

    Marian Hossa a Red Wing, 1yr, $7.45m

I completely agree. Hossa is going to fit right in and be a huge asset to an already stellar team. When I said "the rich get richer," I wasn't referring to salary. I think the Red Wings set the trend in place in 2001 when players took less in order to build a Cup winning team with off season acquisitions. Certainly since then, other players have made it clear that they don't come to Detroit for the money -- they come here to win it all. This club is all about the team. That's the element which makes them so successful. No one player is the key; each player is important in his own way. Take out any one of them, and you might see a momentary lapse in performance, but then another player will step up and they're right back on track. Put them all together and it's often a work of art. They are unselfish, and I don't mean just in terms of salary. Other teams' fans are jealous. Rightly so! We are blessed -- or spoiled, depends on your perspective. I hope to see Hossa remain a Wing for more than one year.

    Marian Hossa a Red Wing, 1yr, $7.45m

I can't stop smiling over this signing. My Dallas Stars fan friend called last night to tell me that they got Avery. I said, "Congratulations. We got Hossa." Wow. The rich just got considerably richer! He wants a Cup, he will work his butt off as a Wing, and he will be worshipped in Detroit. Great move, all around.

    Wings sign Conklin: 1-year, $750K

    or, better still, "The Conk-eror"

    Wings sign Conklin: 1-year, $750K

My thought, as well. RS, did you see where the Sabres picked up Lalime?

    Wings sign Conklin: 1-year, $750K

I can't believe you're even surprised. I'm not. The thread doesn't even have to be about goaltending for some to get a shot or two in... I am glad we got Conklin... he's great insurance in case Ozzie has the wobbles or gets hurt this season. I, for one, was not real happy with the idea of Howard heading into the playoffs as the #1, should that sort of unhappy eventuality materialize. Granted, with the D corps this team boasts, none of the goalies needs to be all that stellar to win it all. Kenny knows that.

    Wings sign Conklin: 1-year, $750K

excellent, Kenny... he will fit in just fine. this is probably the happiest day of Conklin's life.

    back where he belongs. Good.

Larionov makes it into the HHOF!

Awesome news... and so well deserved. I loved Igor as a Wing and on other teams, as well. Ray Scapinello also deserves the honor....he was probably my favorite on-ice official. Scampi wasn't afraid of much, was he??

Charity Hockey Game in Pardubice CZ

Holy Moly! Look at those lineups! I hope there is video or some sort of coverage of this. It would be a dream to be there, for sure. Maybe Stevie is coaching?

    The most prestigious individual award?

I also think it's unlikely (to say the least) that any other goalie will win the Hart and Vezina in in back to back seasons. Ask Jose Theodore is it's easy to do that.

2008 NHL Awards Ceremony Thread (GDT)

I've watched it for years... but this was probably one of the best (due to many Red Wings), along with the Lifetime Achievement award for Gordie, and the way they had the kids announcing the players. It was one of the best I've seen.

2008 NHL Awards Ceremony Thread (GDT)

One thing is certain. It doesn't matter what a hockey player looks like, they can ALWAYS get one of these with no problem. Caption says she's a friend.
