Game 1 SCF: Ottawa Senators at Anaheim Ducks

that was awful. And Emery looked like someone put itchy powder in his jock. Talk about disrespectful. LOL~ I truly don't care, but just had to toss that in, since we all know Dom is the most disrespectful goalie in the league for leaving his helmet on while standing at attention. Go, Sens, go!!!

    Stanley Cup Finals Start Today

Emery looks like he's got his iPod on and is dancing to the anthem. I never want to hear another person complain about Dom not being respectful during the anthem again. Jeez.... Aahhhrrnold, drop de puck!

    No faith in Jimmy Howard?

Years ago, I saw an article about license plate slogans, and then the author had come up with new versions. Vermont, I think had/has "Live Free, or Die" on their plates, so the guy writing the article suggested, "Eat Cheese or Die," for Wisconsin. Or alternatively, "Smell our Dairy Air."

Should the Wings target UFA-to-be Giguere?

I think most of you guys are dead on regarding Dom coming back and him and Ozzie tandeming again. A couple of you...well, I am really glad there's no way you will ever be a hockey GM anywhere, never mind Detroit. Redrockit, you're probably right. Dom is waiting for the playoffs to be over and the Cup awarded (**sob**), before saying what he's going to do. I also believe he will stay for one more year, for more than a couple of reasons. His son in HS, one more run at the Cup, the Wings and management all making it clear they really don't want anyone else... and who says Anaheim will be interested in giving up Giguere anyway? They are probably laughing at the notion. Stu, that's an interesting thought about Giguere, but what if no one else wants him at his salary? We're stuck again with a big contract goalie no one will trade for? But you could be right, Holland is pretty danged smart and certainly knows things we don't. edit: ^^ Lou and Loo are on the same page about the buy-trade Giggy thingie.

Should the Wings target UFA-to-be Giguere?

It wasn't an excuse that the Wings were not running anywhere close to 100%, it was just obvious to everyone who's watched them more than twice. I was really surprised we got as far as we did, honestly. Held my breath through most of each game with Anaheim. Homer was never the same after Mr. Physics slammed his head into the stantion, and it was clear Zata and several others were playing hurt. Missing Kronner and Schneider, the Wings did so well to make it to 6 games.. and never got blown out, besides. They were great! I agree with lots of others in saying we don't need Giguere to win a Cup. We have what we need, or at least we will if Babs, Kenny, and the rest of the Wings locker room get their way. We get Dom back (and Bert) and this team will be playing in the Finals next season... Det News: Foster on the Wings 'Old' works for Wings The Red Wings must roll with the old guys one more season if the price is right. They can win a Stanley Cup with Dominik Hasek in goal and Todd Bertuzzi on the front line. They did not lose to Anaheim because of Hasek. He will be 43 years old, and injuries are a risk. But it is a risk worth taking. Bertuzzi was never healthy during the playoffs. I am sure he will be after the offseason. Unless he is asking for a ridiculous amount of money, which I doubt, the Wings should sign him to an incentive-laden, two-year deal

    No faith in Jimmy Howard?

I admittedly don't know much about Jimmy's performances in GR, since we are lucky to get Wings news here, never mind the Griffins. But I will say (agree) that the way to destroy a young goalie is to throw him into the NHL before he is ready. Heck, seasoned 'tenders who are thrown into the #1 spot too soon are sometimes destroyed by the experience (see Ray Emery for the total opposite of that experience!) When I look at the talent that has come over from GR to the Wings, it's mind-boggling. Give him time to mature and we won't be disappointed -- and Jimmy won't be ruined by "premature matriculation" to the big club. As for Ozzie, I just don't have a same lack of confidence in him that some do. He's a great guy and a great goalie, and I completely agree that he's one of the best, if not the best, backups in the league. I think if Dom comes back next season, we may see more of Oz. Remember last season, he struggled with the injury bug. Ironically, it was "supposed" to be Dom who was prone to injury. Dom stayed healthy all season with the exception of a couple of games with very short term illness and injury because he worked SO hard to stay in perfect condition. Every season is different, but I would expect even more of a true tandem with the sexy duo in Detroit. Please come back, Dom! Your buddy, Ozzie, is waiting for you!

    Little Ottawa Fan

The Sens have a little angel sitting on their bench during this Final. They don't need any more inspiration, I'd say. I was already a fan of Fisher's (and Phillips) before this story. Are there any better men in the sports world than NHL players? I think not. That video was just a heartbreaker, but I loved the clip of Emery allowing that five-hole goal. It made me laugh, as well as like Emery even more. Go, Sens, GO!! Win it for Elgin!

Should the Wings target UFA-to-be Giguere?

boy, howdy, is that ever the truth!!! If the Wings get Giggy in the future and can figure out a way to justify that salary, I could live with JSG as a Wing. Seems like a decent guy, him and his big pads and all. But, I agree with Osgod, that a new goalie on't be the solution in Detroit. We need a PP worse than we need anything else, and scoring accumen.

    If Hasek were to retire...

If he comes back next season as everyone seems to want him to (and why not?), I would expect it to be the last time we will see Dom in the NHL. That will be a sad day for me and a couple of million other hockey fans, but time marches on. Even Dom has his limits. A true champion, Hasek truly doesn't know how to quit.

    If Hasek were to retire...

Niyo's take on Hasek's return "As I've been saying for awhile now, Hasek's likely coming back for one more year. Dom's wife and daughter may be eager to go back to the Czech Republic, but his son's got one more year of high school left and is thinking about going to college here in the U.S., and Dom, obviously, has the desire to play. So I'm guessing the boys will win this family coin flip. One more year of Hasek-Osgood tandem, then it's Howard's turn." I've said the same, that Michael's desire to finish high school here will influence Dom to stay one more year with the Wings. Let's hope the Hasek boys win this debate!

    If Hasek were to retire...

Me, too. I have an article somewhere, from ESPN magazine, on the unretirement season when he came back to participate in the Cujo Circus season. Alena was the one who wanted to leave in 2002, not Dom. She reminded Dom of his promise to her, that when he won a Cup, he would be done. All of their family are in Czech. His kids grew up unable to talk to their own grandparents and family members, they're so Americanized and can't speak Czech well. This can't be an easy thing for Dom, or any other player whose family isn't North American. Remember when Nick used to say he was going to take his family and go home and raise hs kids in Sweden? Alfredsson has said the same in the past. Both are now Captains of their teams, so I guess they've decided work overrides the family concerns. With Dom, it's 50/50 whether he stays or goes. I hope he does the right thing for all concerned, but I am glad I am not him right now. Hopefully, his wife will remember how unhappy he was when he retired, but knew he could still play, and give him one more year with us.

    If Hasek were to retire...

Today's "Dom Watch" News: not sayin' Well, Hasek's stickin' to his guns. He said he will decide in a couple of weeks and he meant it. His kids are still in school and I guess he wants to figure out what's best for everyone, not just himself and the Wings. He's completely healthy, and a 100% Hasek is hands down the better choice in goal than pretty much anyone else out there. Babcock loves Dom. He should; no need to coach this goalie. Quote: Coach Mike Babcock said he'll do his part to ensure Hasek's return. "I'm going to take over a bottle of wine to his house," Babcock said. "I know he lives somewhere in my neighborhood. I'll take over my wife, too, and we'll sit out on his deck and talk it out. "I really like Dom. He's a quality, quality guy who brought a lot to this team. We'd like to have him back but we need to let him make his decision and be comfortable with it." at what price, Dom? "At what price? Including incentives, Hasek cost the Wings $1.65 million this season -- a bargain by almost any standard. He'll get a raise, but Hasek has made it clear he doesn't want to play anywhere else and, truth is, he has given back nearly as much money as he has been paid in Detroit the last five years. " Pay the man, Detroit. You still won't find a better deal. Dom won't be the one breaking the bank, if he does return. freep on Dom and other FAs If you want to know the real factor on Dom's pending return/retirement, here's what to worry about. He loves his family and listens to them. He was so miserable when he did retire that one season, his wife gave in and told him to go back to Detroit and play. But.... "Dominik Hasek was a big factor in the Wings reaching Round 3 instead of losing in the first or second round, as had happened in each of the previous three playoffs, and much of Friday's focus was on whether he would return. He seems inclined to do so, but his wife is believed to be angling for them to retire to their native Czech Republic. Hasek wants at least two to three weeks to decide." The day after the Stanley Cup parade, Dom's wife had the bags packed to leave the country. I think she's wanted to go home since 1999. It's a dilemma for him, I am sure. Give in to the family and go home? Be miserable again, or learn to live with the fact that you could still play, but at what cost to the other part of your life? Hockey players are human, too. Some are still mad at Cheli over Handshake Gate. Big deal. Cheli's still the man, as far as I am concerned. no shake for you, Ducks

Should the Wings target UFA-to-be Giguere?

I feel certain you're right. I don't want Ozzie to go anywhere. As for the rest and who else we can get, who else would be better... I think I will wait and see what Dom says. And then this discussion can start all over again.

Should the Wings target UFA-to-be Giguere?

dunno, not my call... All I am saying is he's a good goalie, with a price tag of just over a million, which we could stomach. I can't see paying $4M for Giggy, even if he would come here over Anaheim.

Should the Wings target UFA-to-be Giguere?

I posted this article earlier today in another thread about the same subject. Holland is not about to hand out a multi-million $ contract to any goalie, not Giggy, not anyone else, either. Dom is the best option, and the job is his if he wants it. He wants the Wings and they want him, so it's up to him. I tend to agree with Sharp that time is not on Dom's side -- but heck, anything could and probably will happen. He busted his ass this season to stay in the game and do his best for Detroit. If Dom can't get through another season, it will be because of an accident or something he can't help -- it's a calculated risk, as with any player. And Duckette, you said what I have been thinking all along. Why would Giguere want to come here, when he clearly loves and is loved in Anaheim? Why would Anaheim let him go, if they could possibly avoid it? You gave some very good insight on what I suspected, re: Giggy and his family, and his relationship with the Ducks and city where he plays. Good for him, if he would play for less to stay where he is. I love a loyal player like that. Anyway, Detroit loves to play musical goalie, so who the heck knows. If Dom doesn't come back, and the brass won't let Ozzie have the reins, I say go get Vesa Toskala. SJ has a habit of dumping goalies who become superstars once they leave SJ. I could happen again. Toskala is a good goalie and he's a hoot (in a good way) besides. If you think Dom is character, wait til you meet this guy.

    If Hasek were to retire...

THAT is the truth. They are still whining about it over on the Ottawa boards. Ray Emery was outstanding for them when Dom was injured, but that didn't mean a thing -- they still blamed Dom. The ONLY good thing about the fact that the Wings are not facing the Sens in the Finals, from my perspective, is that I won't have to read and listen to all the Hasek bashing from bitter Ottawa fans, and the media making a circus out of Dom versus Emery. Ottawa should just be happy they are where they are right now, and get over it. Dom certainly has. He never wanted to leave the Wings in the first place for Ottawa. I hope he makes the right decision for himself and his Wings.

    If Hasek were to retire...

rational decision about a goalie in Detroit? I am not a big Drew Sharp fan, but he makes some very good points in this article. At least he sounds rational to me. Anyway, his comments are better than "Hassek SUKS!" and other so-called reasons for bringing in Giggy or someone else as the Wings' goalie, over Dom coming back. For all we know, Dom is making the same rational points and deciding if he really is the best option for his team, not making an emotional decision because he loves the Wings and wants to still play. Sharp got several things right here: "He [Hasek] successfully silenced those who challenged his professionalism and integrity. They called him a quitter in Ottawa last year. He shut them up during this playoff run. It doesn't matter that the Senators advanced to their first modern-era Stanley Cup final with Hasek's successor, Ray Emery, between the pipes. Hasek showed that when he's equally motivated and healthy, he remains extraordinarily intimidating." Great, someone finally said it! Ottawa was wrong about Dom, and he proved it. That said, while I think Dom may come back, I can also see him bowing out if he decides that Giggy or someone else is better for the team he loves. I think Detroit loves Dom (again) and maybe that's enough for him. We will see, eh?

    If Hasek were to retire...

If Dom doesn't return: Who says Anaheim will let Giguere go, since he is winning the playoffs all by himself? Giggy makes just under $4 millon, so how many players (and whom) will we have to dump to get him? Beware the Martin Gerber syndrome. Over-paying on a contract doesn't get you a great goalie, necessarily. Holland knows that. I wouldn't mind seeing Toskala here, if he's available. He is making $1.3 Million, so he's at least more affordable. Who knows? Out from under Nabby's shadow in SJ, Vesa could turn into the second coming of Kipper. Before I'd get either of these guys or anything else, I'd rather see Ozzie and Howard tandem. But I think Dom will be back, anyway, since Nick and the team want him back, and so does Holland. It's all up to Dom now.

I am not sure what a teacher is supposed to look like. I guess that's good. I was a teacher once, actually, about 20 years ago. I have degrees in Special Education and Learning Disabilities. Now I consult as a network engineer for telcommunications companies, it's a long story, trust me -- sometimes the special ed background still comes in handy, dealing with telephone companies.

    Little Ottawa Fan

oh, sorry... Jason Spezza is nicknamed "Giggles" around Ottawa circles, because he has a horrible nervous laugh when he's speaking to the media. He's toned it down a bit as he's gotten older, so I don't know if they still call him that.
  23. puckloo39

    Is it just me...

Actually, Kipper and Brodeur were playing golf (along with the other Vezina candidates, Luongo and Lundquist) while Hasek was still shutting down teams in the playoffs. Giggy is OK. He made a couple of great saves, but on the balance, Kipper and Dom were the real quality 'tenders in the playoffs so far. Of course, he still has time to really shine. Except for the fact that Emery is insanely competitive (learned from the Master in 2006-06) and will probably steal the entire Finals. Giggy will get to see a healthy team. The Sens can seemingly score at will. I'll be interested to see who gets the headlines in the Finals, and I betcha it won't be Giggy. Go, Sens, GO!!!!

    Little Ottawa Fan

NHL players are the best guys in the sports world, hands down. I liked Fisher and Phillips before this story (and Alfie and Giggles and several other Sens). If there is such a thing as a team "deserving" the Cup, it's Ottawa - since we can't have it this year. Go, Sens, Go! congratulations on both little ones.

Hasek: "I may have played my last game"

not that it's any real indicator, since you never actually know what Dom's going to do until he says or does it, read any of the articles in today's Detroit News (click on the links at the top of this page under Detroit News Headlines). If Holland and the team have anything to say about it, Dom will be back. At least since we know Chelios will be back, Dom won't be the oldest one on the team, eh?
