I don't know about completely giving up on a shot at winning but I agree with the notion that the streak is too important to them to not do everything in their power to improve the team both next year and down the line.. And that would mean moving Datsyuk's cap hit if he were to leave but only if they have something else lined up of course. I think that new one week (or however long it is) interview period rule is pretty huge for GMs in general but especially for holland in a year like this. Interviewing upcoming UFAs and then possibly exploring trade options will tell him if he even needs to move the cap hit.

Yeah, savard still gets paid some I believe (not the full amount because it was front loaded). Datsyuk's cap hit will be free for whoever has it.

I'd be happy with something like "Gordie Howe Arena at Little Caesars Colosseum." They get their corporate sponsorship, fans get "The Gordie" or "The Howe" to replace "The Joe" instead of just the pizza pizza arena arena. Glad we made an offer to helm. He sounded like his decision is more about usage than money.. I think he just wants consistent line mates. Just my thoughts after reading his comments at the end of the season. Richards was the team USA guy this past worlds, right? They had a pretty good showing.. I think I'd prefer him over Cameron based on my admittedly pretty limited knowledge on the two of them.

I think both sides have good points re: the Datsyuk/Carolina debate. Why wouldn't Carolina try? Holland could probably get rid of the contract alone but would he risk not being able to get rid of it at all over say moving a less important player or prospect for a late pick or swapping down a round in picks or whatever the little bit extra would be? Even if the chances a deal doesn't get done at all are slim, I'm not so sure.. Especially if potentially signing stamkos is on the table.
