Chris Illitch speaks: Holland will stay - Blashill's future is up to Holland.
PavelValerievichDatsyuk replied to kickazz's topic in General
If you're comparing how the 2 franchises handle firings, L.A. missed the playoffs 2 years ago and didn't fire GM and owner. But anyways, a team like L.A. who is armed with the assets from missing the playoff 6 years in a row should be judged differently the Wings. A closer comparison would be The Devils' handling of Lou Lamoriello after their long playoff streak ended. He got 3 years of not making the playoffs before he moved to a different position and another GM took over. If we don't turn things around in a couple of years, I expect something similar. -
I'm fine with waiting until he's a UFA - especially since his local ties point to us having a good chance. And I wouldn't give the high assets that some are talking about. I just think pointing to him playing roughly 60 games ignores his actual story when judging what he's proven. It's not a reason to stay away from him due to the explanations. And It doesn't represent a trend that you would expect to continue (unless you think he's going to have a contract dispute every year).
-
Not sure what you're trying to say with this. He missed he first 15 games due to the contract dispute plus 2 for a suspension for a head hit. He's been healthy the last 2 years and only missed 6 games due to injuries. If you were implying he's injured a lot, you should look at those explanations. He had 1 bigger injury in his 2nd year when he tried to eat the boards. The first year, I'd imagine the missed games would be scratched for a player in his first year pro.

Well, I think this explains why Robitaille wasn't at the Joe celebration.

I don't know which game it was. I just heard it on the radio and they said it was in 1995. Wikipedia has that too, but doesn't say which game. A good guess would be one of the 2 games at Joe Louis in the final against the Devils. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/red-wings-fans-threw-35-octopuses-ice-joe-louis-arena-farewell-004926074.html Yahoo says it was 35 last night. so close, haha. -

Yeah, I'll be interested to see what what the final count is. The record is 36 in one game and I think there's a chance they beat it. Last night in an interview with Al, he said that they make good food for fish, so if the city let him throw them in the river again or if he took them to an aquarium then there would be absolutely no issue of waste for Peta or anyone else. -

Fetisov is high on the KHL's board of governors and the KHL is right in the last few games of their playoffs. He probably has to be there for that. As for other guys missing, I don't think Paul Coffey or Ray Sheppard were there, but I missed a few segments so maybe I just didn't see them, Draper's the weirdest one not to be there since he still is in the organization. I wonder why. -

Sorry, but the logic of this make no sense. Seems like she was saying that you wouldn't have consider your hypothetical situation because the more realistic course would be a gradual phasing out of the practice. As for the octopi, even if people like the tradition, - which I do - I think we can all agree that it is a waste. It doesn't rank high in the realm of animal cruelty or food waste, but it's still something. It's not usually that many, but the record is 36 octopi in one game. I think PETA chose to speak about it now because there's been a lot of speculation that the final game at the Joe there's surely going to be a lot thrown. And it makes sense that PETA would say something about it because it has higher profile in the media and people pay attention more to it. Also, maybe their thinking is that having a fine announced beforehand would dissuade fans and keep the number within reason. Or maybe the wings can find some use for them after their cleanup. Hard to think what that would be, though, since they've been unrefridgerated for a while. -
Yeah, the wording from Holland seems a little weird, cause it's not a team could force him to get - or not to get - surgery. I think it's probably more a nice way of saying we'll see if he wants to keep fighting the pain and whatever he decides is fine and we'll deal with it.
-
Just further evidence for that, here's an article from the summer. Apparently Kronwall did already have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee - like Ohlund did on both of his. Then on further surgery Kronwall says: "I think the surgery that was talked about was something that wouldn't be the best idea if I wanted to play again." http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2016/09/red_wings_niklas_kronwall_impr.html So surgery would probably be the end and the question is just how long he can - or wants to - put up with the pain so he can keep playing.
-
I think you're right, kick, about the surgery. And maybe that's what Holland meant by "he's earned the right to make his own choice." The choice could be try to fight through the pain for 2 more years and finish the contract or he gets surgery which means his career's possibly over and he might end up riding it out LTIR. Or, even if it doesn't cancel out the full 2 years, recovery from a knee surgery can be a big thing and maybe not worth it just to get back for 1-1.5 years.

Mattias Ohlund was on LTIRetirement for a knee injury from 2011-2016. Here's a summary from Wikipedia: "Prior to the start of the 2011–12 season, Öhlund began experiencing inflammation in his right knee. The Lightning placed him on injured reserve on October 4, 2011; a week later, he underwent arthroscopic surgery on both knees.[43] After there was optimism he was close to returning to the lineup in December, he suffered a setback with his left knee and underwent further surgery in February 2012.[notes 1][44][45] During his recovery, he told reporters with Swedish newspaper Expressen that he was unsure whether he could continue playing.[46]His contract with the Lightning expired July 1, 2016. He was until that date listed on the team roster but was on injured reserve since 2011." I think there's 0% chance Kronwall would straight up retire. He'd be aware of the cap penalty and wouldn't knowingly hurt the team like that.
