I remember a similar outcry with Comerica Park about commercialization when they left Tiger's Stadium for the company named building Henry Ford was an anti-semite that published the infamous book The International Jew: The World's Foremost Problem (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_International_Jew) and assisted the nazi war effort. He was quoted as saying " If fans wish to know the trouble with American baseball they have it in three words—too much Jew." https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/anti-semitism/ford.html http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/interview/henryford-antisemitism/ ...As you talk about something you don't want your team associated with. Personally, just having a company that makes bad pizza isn't so bad. -
Here's Tatar's quotes: "My goals were way higher than they end up, but it was different stuff this year than it was last year. It was different position for me, so I guess what the numbers are saying is the way it is now." "I think the position was way different this year than last year, after last season playing most of the time with Pav (Datsyuk) and Helmer (Darren Helm)," Tatar said. "This time I was kind of around the lines. With different position comes different responsibility. Wherever I played I tried to play best, bring the energy as much as I could." "It was a little tougher to get comfortable, I was squeezing the stick almost all season. The goals I set were hard to end up (with), so it was kind of disappointing for me." I don't see how any of that is really criticism of Blashill. He acknowledge that the place he was put with Pav was better for production and that being put with Shea and Nyquist and "around the lines' was "tougher," but he says "I don't mind being in that position...We can't leave everything on Pav and Hank (Zetterberg), those guys need help. I think last season me and Nyquist stepped up and helped them." http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2016/04/red_wings_tomas_tatar_was_sque.html

Buppy and Kliq covered most of what I would have responded to here. I'm just going to put in the perspective that our cup drought is the 5th shortest. I does show us to be a little spoiled to expect to be winners again so soon after. The cap is designed so that cup are spread around and success is not suppose to be sustainable. It's like MarioCart, where all the cars in last place get all the good s*** in the ? boxes. And when you're in first you get hit by all that good s*** and try to make a go of it with your little banana peel that you receive and hold on long enough to get your prize. Or maybe I drank a little tonight... But really, 25 other fanbases have a right to be angrier than we are. Plus I think we have a real hope of returning to the elite with Mrazek, Larkin, DK, Tatar, Nyquist, AA etc.
-
No worries. I didn't feel attacked. But the "excuses" comment is a general sentiment I see around here all the time. To me it says, I don't care about the real constraints with the way that the league is now, I just want cups, I want to be the dominant team that we were before the cap. To just right off these realities as 'excuses" is to not look at things realistically.

Thoughtful.

It's not even possible for Holland intentional control everything with the wings. What would that even mean? He convinced the league to switch to the salary cap? Holland convinced Rafalski to retire early? He arranged Suter to meet a woman and BFF from Minnesota so that we would miss out on that signing? He's a poker player trying to deal with the hand dealt. He's trying to make us great again by the way he thinks best with the circumstances of the league. The cap is meant to spread success around - we've fought the economic forces that tear apart success and we're the only team to make the playoffs every year post-lockout. People need realize that the most likely alternative to our current 5 year dip in success is not trades and Stanley cups - It's the 10 year tank. I can only imagine the blogs that would be written in that situation. I think we'll be contenders in 3 years - we'll all see how Mraz, Larkin, Mantha etc. develop and if we'll be able to find the missing pieces.

Though I've loved going to the Joe, the concourse had all the soul and atmosphere of a parking garage. I think the Joe was objectively a pretty crappy arena: inconvenient parking, trough bathrooms, UGLY from the outside, the inconvenient staircase entrance on one side, those shady portal walkways to get to the rink (went there with my Grandpa and he had trouble with the all the walking it took to get there), in a desolate part of town (maybe too harsh, but little is around it and it isn't a warm feeling part of town). People learn to love those dingy aspects and call them character, but it was time for a change. History comes with time passing. I'm sure The Joe was criticized for it's modern design at some point.

Yeah, I guess I understand the deal with the fact that Andy was put in, but the discussion should been of why Jurco or Pulkkinen weren't in instead. To me, those 2 should have been in line ahead of Andy or Mantha. While I agree with your larger point about different players developing at different paces, Some of your claims are off. In the category of 21-30 picks that have "outperformed" Mantha you should also include: - Marko Dano (#27) has 31 pts. in 69 gp: for Columbus, Blackhawks, and Jets. (2nd trade in 3 years?) - Maybe also include Shea Theodore (#26) has 8 pts. 19 gp: great for a Dman plus 37pts in 50 gp in the AHL, Don't know much about him, but 6'2" point producing Dman...I want As for the several guys taken ahead of him that you claim are behind him in development: - Nurse played the majority of the year with The Oilers (69 gp) and did pretty well from what I've read (though a trade for Hamonic was suggested/rumoured) -

2 others in the AHL: Tangradi (28) and Frk (27, 28 including playoffs). I was hoping Mantha would at least lead GR this year. He did have a pretty good season, though, and bounced back from a rough/injured first pro season. I expect Mantha to become a big player for us, but he's not demanding a spot yet to me so I don't understand why it has become such an issue that he was sent down. He's leading the Griffins in points in the playoffs so far and that's great to see. He's making the case for himself next year.

Okay, yeah, that is a good case for some kind of public naming. Either public voting on a name or a public figure. I think I misunderstood what you meant before. For those those suggesting The Oven as a nickname, I disagree. I mean the Shark Tank makes sense: Sharks inside the shark tank and other teams should be wary coming in. If we have Wings inside the oven, it means our goose is cooked. -
Positive words from Holland on Mantha and Bertuzzi: "Both bring important dimensions," Holland said. "Both are young players that we need to be important in Detroit one day." http://www.freep.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2016/04/27/detroit-red-wings-anthony-mantha/83593078/ plus video of Mantha send 2 goals through the mesh of the net.

I agree with this perspective to a point and John Oliver did a solid episode on publicly funded arenas. I've heard arguments on the other side that also sway. I've seen that the arena is estimated to cost $627M and could go higher. Even though Ilitch is personally worth 5 billion+, I doubt his company has that amount of free cash to spend at one time so I understand if a certain amount coming from government funding. One thing to consider on the naming issue, is that the Ilitches have essentially turned away a huge amount of money by not selling the naming rights to another company. Maybe it's their interest to have the advertising (although I don't think it's that much extra exposure - we all knew the new arena would be lined with Little Ceasars venders, signage, and they would give free pizzas at the games just like they do at the Joe). But think of the alternative of them taking a huge amount of public money and then using the arena to bring in an extra money to cover part of their end (Blues got 70 million for 20 years naming rights for the Savvis center for a random example) Probably everyone would prefer Howe arena or honoring some local hero, but I think Little Ceasars is the best option for corporate naming. -

Unfortunately for Holland, those won't be the relative comparables that Helm's agent will bring to negotiations. -

Helm currently makes. 2.125 on a deal he signed 4 years ago as a RFA. You really think he's only going to get a 375 000 dollar raise, with 4 years of rising nhl salaries, and given that he's poised to be an UFA? It's a UFA contract and he's not Drew Miller, he'll definitely get at least 3 mill. -

More info on the Helm situation: "It started sounding like Kenny wanted to get things done here pretty quick," Helm said. "I got that injury and nothing really formed after that. I didn't have the best year statistically and mentally not as far as playing, but just how the way things were going on at the rink and on the ice. I was hoping to have at least some conversations about an extension ... we'll see what happens." http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2016/04/red_wings_darren_helm_express.html I think Hem sounds a bit like a jilted lover. He has definitely spoken fondly of the organization. In 2 recent signings (Tootoo, Green) both said they were friends with Helm and his glowing praise for the organization were part of their decision to come here. I think he expected to be more of a priority. Again, hope we keep. He, Abby, and Glendening provide a good ingredient of drive on a team that seemed at times lackadaisical. -

Tatar was put in tougher position and that Tat-Shea-Ny 3rd line shouldn't have been forced to stay together. I like that he walks the line and never really complains in this interview. As for Helm's comments, there has been some uncertainty about his role the past few years and I understand him being concerned about signing up here for the long haul. He's a natural center and hasn't been able to play center in 2-3 years. For his first 3 years with the team he was pretty much always the 3rd line center. Then the last 2 years he's been moving between 2nd and 3rd line winger and now being relegated to 4th line at times this year, I'm sure he's not happy with that development. Now with Larkin, AA and Sheahan in competition for the 3rd line center and our top 9 wingers looking like some combiniation of Z/lark, Abby, Tat, Ny, Mantha, Sheahan, Pulk, Jurco, I'm sure he's questioning where he'll end up if he continues here. Hope we keep Helm, though. I think he should have been kept in the 3C position. He was good with Tatar and Datsyuk as well and that would have been nice to have that line together this year, but now - if Datsyuk leaves - I don't know how he will fit if he's a winger. It will be interesting to see what we do down the middle for next year. I could feel good about Larkin, AA, Helm, Glen in 2-3 years, but that looks rough right now. I think we've got to move Z to wing for his preservation. Z-Shea-AA-Glen seems probable, though. -

First of all, your quoted passage isn't straight forward. It says "Despite the fact that the Family Code includes a general rule that stipulates spouses should support each other from a financial point of view an ex-spouse is only entitled to alimony when:" So...He wouldn't have to pay Alimony, but he has to support her financially...which sounds like the same thing under a different name to me. Second, If you re-read the Mitch Albom article, it specifically mentions that he still has a good relationship with his ex-wife: "...his desire to rejoin his daughter Elizabeth, who is being raised in Russia by Datsyuk’s first wife, Svetlana. While the former couple enjoy a friendly relationship, Datsyuk said, he felt too absent from the day-to-day affairs of his child, and worried, as she entered adolescence (she is now 13) that he wouldn’t be there for guidance." Even if he would have to pay less, you're friend's theory seems a pretty extreme way to screw over the ex-wife. It would probably also alienate his daughter. It seems pretty unlikely, especially from a guy who seems like (and was voted by other NHL players in a few polls I've seen over the years) one of the most likeable guys in the league. Also, if alimony were a motivation, why would that be a pressing issue that he would have to leave now and not just wait until next year. He's a multimillionaire and will make even more when he plays in the KHL. Why would the 25% (or whatever it would be) of next year's 5.5 million be so precious to him? I prefer to respect him and take him at his word. -
Except this year no one here will be complaining about Franzen's contract or us bringing back Cleary. (I'm going to pre-empt someone's joke of "don't speak too soon.")
-
I'd like Dekeyser. Wouldn't be surprised or disappointed if it were Abby.

I'm guessing your friend of a friend is wrong. They still have Alimony in Russia. -
Why? Your original post was about Holland bringing "in guys from the outside" and you were talking about trades and UFAs. Green was a big name proven UFA. So were Alfie and Weiss, but, yes, they were past their prime (though, we didn't know that for sure with Weiss at the time and he was only 29 or 30). With Datsyuk's departure and if we decide to get rid of his cap hit, we could be players for Stamkos, Yandle and other. It's a different situation than regular years. Just like when Lidstrom left and we tried to land Suter, this could be a time for a bigger addition.
-
Saying "he doesn't like to do it" means "doesn't do it" to me. Why would his mindset have any bearing on anything? From your characterization, I can deduce that we might get Yandle, but, hey, Holland will have an internal battle about it. If you're interested in predicting whether we'll sign a UFA, then we're looking at whether we've done it in the past. My list was not everyone from the past 10 years. Only Hossa is from that long ago. The rest were all brought in the last 5 years (Conklin was brought in twice - once a few years ago). I'm sure there are some that I didn't list as well - someone mentioned Cole, Zidlicky and Coliacovo, Huskins, were also other players from outside the organization. Alfie, Weiss, Green, Dekeyser were all top UFAs in their years. Alfie and Weiss were past their primes, but Green and DK don't fit your categorization the UFAs we've brought in (yes, Green may be past his prime in the sense that he's not the award winner that he was, but he was 29 when we signed him and he's still a very good hockey player).
