The only rationale I can think of is he sees the center position as being very weak this year and the winger position very strong so sign helm for much cheaper than Nielsen and go after a couple wingers. Move Larkin to center and put Erikkson and Okposo on this team. Then trade for fowler. What prolly happens though is he signs Hudler and tries to get Samuelsson out of retirement. -

Unbelievable....just unbelievable. The only way I'm ok with this is if he doesn't sign Nielsen and instead gets Okposo and Eriksson. -

I think if we are getting Nielsen, we have to get Okposo too. Just Nielsen by itself leaves us a worse team than we were last year and we BARELY made the playoffs. If it is just Nielsen, I'd rather stand pat and do a mini rebuild. -

If you wanted him to come down on term you would prolly have to pay him 8 mill. So instead of $7/7 you could maybe get him for $8/4. All speculation of course. I'm sure he would rather have term like most of the other big name free agents. -

Come tomorrow they are the big fish now. In hindsight it would have been nice for Stamkos to wait until July 3rd to sign with Tampa while we cleaned up on the 2nd tier guys for cheaper. -

You can be assured holland will spend at least 7.5 mill in free agency. You can't trade Datsyuk's contract and then sit on the cap space. I'd rather pay a guy like Okposo 8 mill on a 3 year deal then 6-7 mill in a 6-7 year deal. Paying more for shorter term would be the best for us in the long run -

I'd rather re-up Helm and get Okposo then to sign Nielsen to a long deal to get a center. Nielsen will end up being a terrible contract in 2 years. -
I think it means he was never really considering us. His team just beat us in the playoffs 2 years in a row. And they did it this year without him. Prolly doesn't see Detroit as an opportunity to win.

I'm not saying we need to purposely tank. None of the free agents are going to make us contenders so why give a guy like Nielsen who is 32 a 5 or 6 year deal worth 5.5-6.0 million dollars just because. -
Subban must have wanted out of Montreal. Or they didn't see eye to eye with him. I don't see why you make this trade unless there were off ice issues.

The only good thing is he signed before July 1st. At least we didn't get strung along for 3 days while all the other free agents signed like Suter and Parise did.

Might not be the worst thing in the world to do nothing. I want to win a cup and sadly I don't think we do that now by signing free agents. The only way this team is going to be a bonafide contender in a few years is to get an Auston Matthews type player. And unfortunately that only happens by tanking. Stamkos would have allowed us to keep afloat for a few more years but I don't think Okposo or any combination of the other free agents makes us a contender. -
