Very reminiscent of Datsyuk's story. Let's hope this story ends the same. This is why I don't know why people were panicking over the draft. Any pick that is endorsed by Hakan Andersson is endorsed by me. I've said for a long time that the day we lose Hakan is the day this team goes in the gutter.

I agree. If Detroit believed this guy was a franchise defenseman, they would never trade the pick away just to get rid of Datsyuk's contract. They had other offers on the table and other avenues they could have explored. My belief is they weren't high on Chychrun and used his hype to their advantage. Time will tell how good he is but I don't think he was as high on our draft board as other teams.

I've been reading about how Toronto is ready to throw an offer at Stamkos and even one possibly bigger than 10 mill. What I don't understand is how they can afford it. Capfriendly says they only have around 3 mill in space. Am I missing something? https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/mapleleafs

Yea getting Stamkos is the most expensive player we can get but he is also the most guaranteed return on your investment. Backes, Okposo, Ladd and others are good players but they need to fit well into the system and mesh well with the players around them to be great. Stamkos will produce no matter who is on his line and what your system is. He has to be our #1 priority. It's not everyday a 26 year old superstar in his prime is a free agent. And it's definitely not every day they Red Wings actually have the cap space for a player like that.

Not sure about the draft this year but I say they same thing every year and I'm usually pleasantly surprised. There is a reason they passed on some of the more obvious picks and went other directions. They know what we are doing. I know people have heard this a million times but the Wings were criticized for taking an unknown small forward out of Russia named Datsyuk over more obvious names left in that round. In Hakan and the rest of the recruiting staff we trust!

I can't wait to come back to this thread in 6-7 years when one of these guys turns out to be a draft steal. The Wings are know what they are doing when it comes to drafting. Have a little faith.

Don't get this pick but the Wings have a great enough track record that I suppose I can trust they see something in this kid.

I think it's safe to say that if Chychrun didn't fall to us then this deal would have never happened. If we somehow possibly sign Stamkos, years from now we could be looking back at this night, where the league passing on Chychrun who may end up being a dud, saved the franchise.

No he is riding the days when we didn't have to worry about the salary cap and marquee players flocked to Detroit and took pay cuts for a chance to win the cup. Since the salary cap era began he has proven to be a mediocre gm that is afraid to take a gamble and only makes a trade when he is bent over a barrel.

He said roster players jk. Holland hasn't traded a major player on the team to shake up things since the 90's. I was one of the people who called for us to trade Nyquist 2 years ago when he went bonkers the 2nd half of the season. He could have snagged us a hell of a player then but loyal Holland wouldn't do anything like that.
