GDT 1/30/25: Wings @ Oilers: The Best vs. the rest
kipwinger replied to kipwinger's topic in General
I think we win 4-3 in OT -
Obviously you have to win the games, and that’s never easy, but I think if we go .600-.750 against teams in our division from here on out we will make the playoffs. We will occasionally drop games to Florida, Tampa, Toronto but if we win most of our remaining games against Boston, Montreal, Ottawa, Buffalo were probably good.

Yeah, I don’t really see any downside with Todd. I realize that he’s never won a Cup, but I actually kinda prefer that. Right before we hired him I was talking to a buddy about the Wings and said I wanted a coach that was still hungry to win…just like I want players that are hungry to win and not just riding out the ends of their careers. Todd still has something to prove and I like that. Edit: Plus we now play faster and more exciting hockey. I remember one of the dumb dumbs around here said Todd played “boring trap” hockey. Couldn’t be further from the truth…thank god. It’s fun to see the boys score goals finally.

Tampa, Montreal, Boston and NYR all lost tonight. Good night for the Wings’ playoff chances.

Red Wings GDT : Season 98, Episode 50 ; Kings in a Jester's Court
kipwinger replied to LeftWinger's topic in General
I agree that those are needs, but I'm kinda okay with the way the young guys have been taking over this team organically. Like, why rush Danielson, ASP, Cossa, etc.? I'm not suggesting leaving them in the AHL too long. I'm just saying the developmental strategy that's worked for guys like Berg, Ed, Aljo, and Kasper seems to be working so why not stick with that? Treat Danielson, for example, just like Marco. Make him earn it with his play. -
We wake up this morning two points out of the Wild Card, three points out of the final divisional seed, and three VERY beatable divisional rivals just ahead of us in the standings. The postseason is still very attainable. What an unbelievable turnaround we've seen. There's no doubt in my mind that the team we just watched spank LA last night (with a third line of Motte-Veleno-Shine?!?!?) can go better than .500 against Ottawa, Montreal, Boston, and Tampa for the remainder of the season. If we can be the best (or even 2nd best) team in that group we should make the playoffs...assuming we keep it up. It's a good day to be a Red Wings fan.

Damn, Marco is pretty damn good. Who could have seen that coming? -

Started a little shaky but Marco and Raymond with two great plays leading to goals. Rolling now. Johansson is emerging. That dude looks real solid tonight again. -
Did he get signed for a second year?
-
I think so. With the exception of Edmonton those are all winnable games (for a road trip). If we can win 3/4 we’ll be sitting in a playoff spot by the middle of next week IMO. It’s doable, but now’s the time for this team to really step up.

Guys, I just met Mike Babcock and he took my phone, looked at my dick pics, and then made me write a list of all the most useless Red Wings this season. At the top of the list is Tarasenko. He’s actively worse than Petry was.

2024-25 In Season Trades/Waivers/Promotions Thread
kipwinger replied to LeftWinger's topic in General
Correct. Copp eats hard minutes and that is a thankless but necessary job. Trade Yzerman if we don’t like the contract. -
I’m dumb?
-
Kucherov with a super dirty play on the Rasmussen empty netter. He should get a fine for that one, maybe a suspension if Ras is injured.
-
I want Tarasenko off this team SO bad
-
Seider is having a rough night on the powerplay

This game is fun despite the low score. These divisional games take on a whole new meaning with all this parity. I love it.

Our 3rd pair needs to get shot into the moon.

Vasi is keeping Tampa in it right now

Wings trading chances with Tampa here in the first. Fun game.

I agree with 99% of this, but I don't agree that Kiiskinen "doesn't provide much" if he's not scoring. He's a good two-way player and checking winger as well. He also kills penalties. Think of his game as a Finnish Tyler Bertuzzi or Carter Mazur. He's got bottom six winger written all over him without the scoring, and middle six winger if his scoring translates (he's got size, speed, and shot so I don't see why it wouldn't).
-
The point isn’t the number of days or months between them in age. Because Kiiskinen is in the prior years draft class, he’s played one more full season of hockey than MBN. Despite their ages Kiiskinen has been a year ahead in his development since he was a kid. This same thing is true of Kasper (young for his draft class) and Danielson (older for his draft). They’re only 6 months apart but Marco has played one full year more. That’s a years worth of practice, training, development, that the younger player doesn’t have.

Bumping this in appreciation of Nathan MacKinnon. That dude is unreal and my #1OA pick if I’m roleplayong as an NHL GM.
