Next contracts for the young guns

I'd try to get Larkin locked up long term. I'd consider doing the same with Mantha as well, but I'd probably opt to sign Mantha and Athanasiou to bridge contracts or maybe something in between... Larkin - 6-8 years at around $5-6M. Mantha and Athanasiou - 4-6 years at $4-5M OR 2-3 years at $3-4M This is one area I have full confidence in Holland. I'm sure whatever he decides on these guys, it'll be reasonable contracts. I'd definitely prefer a longer contract for Larkin though.

Next contracts for the young guns

Not directed at Datsyukian Deke, but it seems some things (this being one of them) have to be repeated over and over and over again, and it still doesn't sink in with some people...

    Karlsson on the move?

The Oilers are an extreme example, and no I don't want to "rebuild like the Oilers"... I never said anything about missing the playoffs next year, let alone 4-5 years... The best way to build this team up again, is a combination of high draft picks, savvy trades, and free agent signings. You don't put all your eggs in the Erik Karlsson basket. I wouldn't do it, and fortunately for me (us) Ken Holland wouldn't either. Holland will play it smart, continue to draft and develop (his biggest strength), and make a hard push for Karlsson in free agency when (if) he hits in a year and a half.

    Karlsson on the move?

I don't think he'll re-sign with the Sens, but there's still a chance he can. They have all the leverage until after next year's deadline (he'll likely be traded before then), and anyone trading for him will have to give up a TON. If he is traded, it's not going to be for a couple picks and spare parts. Regardless, trading for Karlsson would be a huge mistake in my opinion. We're trying to rebuild, and it while it would fill a massive hole on defense, it wouldn't create many more holes in other areas. If we really want Karlsson, we should wait until he hits free agency in 2019.

    Karlsson on the move?

Any deal for Karlsson starts with Larkin. Add in Hronek, our 2018 (not Vegas') and 2019 first round picks, along with a 2nd in one of those years and you might get their attention. You're not going to get him with a couple firsts, thirds and mid tier prospects. Not going to happen. A trade for Karlsson is going to take high end roster players / prospects / picks. Two teams that were heavy in talks with Ottawa were Tampa and Vegas, because they both have a surplus of at least 2 of 3 of these things. We don't. Trading for Karlsson, who is a pending UFA would be a terrible move for this team right now.

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

We can trade both, but we shouldn't trade both. Howard should have been the one traded though. Their "total salary sum"? Howard's salary (cap hit) is higher. *For a team rebuilding* we should have traded the more expensive / (one year longer) contract. Our "progress curve"? Howard is much older with no upside. Mrazek is younger with upside. *For a team rebuilding* we should have traded the older goalie. You're damn right Mrazek was easier to trade. You know why? Because of the reasons I just mentioned. Better contract, younger, and more upside. Athanasiou would be easier to trade than Helm too. Does that mean we should trade him? "In a snapshot of the present" it doesn't matter that we traded Mrazek? Mrazek shouldn't have just been viewed as the goalie of "the present", but maybe, just maybe, the goalie of the future. I'm not saying Mrazek should have been untouchable, but we should have never given him away for a (maybe two) mid round draft pick(s).

    Wings Interested In Resigning Green

He's a top three on any team in this league, top two on most and number one on ours. But yeah, let's let him walk. Our defense sucks, so why not make it worse right?...

    Wings Interested In Resigning Green

Yes, we should re-sign our best defenseman... If you're complaining about no roster spots for the kids, you sign Green and trade one of the many mediocre defensemen. There's not a single defensemen on the team that can do what Mike Green does on a nightly basis. Nor is there a kid in the minors that can step in and do it right away. Hronek will hopefully be that guy in another year or two, but Green is the one guy, I'd want him learning from. Re-signing Green is a no-brainer, and after not getting anything for him at the deadline, I'd be pissed to see him walk for nothing... 2 years $10.5M (preferably) or 3 years 12M is around what I'd like to see.

Mrazek traded to Philly for Conditional 3rd and 4th Picks

I know this is likely sarcasm, but yes, yes we did make a mistake trading Mrazek and keeping Howard...

    Grade the deadline

Like has been mentioned, it's hard to believe Green couldn't have been traded for something under conditions of him playing x number of games in the regular season / playoffs. The return on Tatar was massive. I was expecting something in the ballpark of a 2nd and mid tier prospect, getting that 1st along with it was huge. I didn't like the Mrazek trade. I give him a generous C...

    Rumors Thread

In hindsight a 2nd would have been great 2 months ago. But of course no one had any way of knowing about the forthcoming injury. And that same injury never would have happened if he were traded 2 months ago (or 2 weeks ago)... I'm disappointed Green wasn't traded because I do think a deal could have been made. You would think something could have been worked out under the conditions that he plays x number of games in the regular season and playoffs. Oh well, the return on Tatar far exceeded my expectations. I give Holland a C, based on the return on Tatar and the no-trade on Green...

    Rumors Thread

The thing is modified NTC's are usually just as effective for the player as full NTC's, especially at the deadline. There are usually only a handful of teams that want to trade for these players this time of year. If Green only wanted to go to Tampa or Washington, he'd essentially be able to do that with a modified NTC (10 team no-go list). His list would include the top teams that would most likely be looking to trade for him, not the bottom feeders, because he knows damn well that teams like Arizona aren't selling off assets for a rental...

That's a HUGE haul for Tatar! What year are these picks? All 2018? I'd assume at least one is 2019?

No they didn't. I'd take the 3rd and McIlrath over Jokinen and Motte for sure. It's so true though. I really hope we trade (get a good return on) Tatar...

Dreger says he still expects Holland to make some moves before the deadline. Likely both Green and Tatar will be moved.
