Official 2018 NHL Amateur Entry Draft Discussion Thread
krsmith17 replied to LeftWinger's topic in General
I'm not counting him out, but I don't think he was ever going to be a top line winger. If he's not a top 2 winger, that would make him a middle six winger. I hope he proves me wrong, but I'm just not that high on Evgeny. Saying this is a bad year is a bit of an understatement though... To think, we could have had Brock Boeser with that pick... -

Sergei and Andrei Kostitsyn. I'd say that Eric and Jordan may be the most apt comparison. Eric was an elite top line forward (center) and Jordan was / is a solid middle six forward (center). -

I think the drop off from Andrei to Evgeny is pretty significant though. One has the potential to be an elite top line winger. The other will likely be a middle six winger. That's not to say they couldn't play together if we did draft his little brother. I doubt it would ever be like the Sedin's though. Those two are (were) both elite, and they also had the whole identical twin thing as well. I'd like to get Andrei, but I'd probably go with Tkatchuk if I had the choice... Dahlin and Svechnikov. Rebuild accelerated. -

My bet would be on us taking Svechnikov, although I'd probably prefer Tkatchuk. I'd be more than okay with either though... -

Nah, I don't even think Holland would do that... -

No. -
I'm assuming this is a joke? No deal, unless they throw in a s***ty defensive prospect that was drafted in the 7th round two years ago and putting up underwhelming numbers in the Dub... They'd probably want us to throw in Nastasiuk in order to get that kid...

He's going to be so disappointed when we win the draft lottery... -
Yup. Melnyk is a cheap f***. I actually feel really bad for Sens fans. It's one thing to know your team sucks. It's completely different to know your team sucks and the owner isn't willing to spend any money to improve the team. Imagine having Erik Karlsson and knowing he won't be around much longer because your owner is too cheap to pay him what he's worth... Sad.

Because anyone can get traded, and that includes any current Red Wing, despite what those say about us having so many "unmoveable" or "untradeable" contracts...

Beat me to it. Glendening to Toronto would be amazing.

Eklund is the epitome of "throw enough s*** at the wall and some is bound to stick". Zero credibility. The last thing this organization needs is another boom or bust goalie prospect. I know you don't have much faith in Mrazek, but it's still possible that he could be here for another 6+ years. Of course, it's also possible he could be gone in the next week... Regardless, we have Keith Petruzzelli, Filip Larsson and Joren Van Pottelberghe that are all boom or bust goaltenders at the same age as Samsonov. While he looks like he could be the real deal, as we've seen with Mrazek, goaltending is such a crap shoot. I'd rather bank on one of the guys already in our organization panning out, rather than bringing in another goalie at a high price tag. If we're trading for prospects, it needs to be for defensemen, centers, and (right shooting) wingers. Not goalies...

Green is not going to get us a top prospect AND a first round pick. It's likely going to be one or the other, and maybe an additional piece, like a third round pick or mid tier prospect. Holland really has an opportunity here to redeem himself for some of the bad moves he's made over the past few years. Here's to hoping...

I'm not too familiar with "The Draft Analyst", but I'm not going to take too much stock into anyone that has Svechnikov going number one ahead of Dahlin... Also, Tkatchuk dropping to 8th? Not going to happen. Stick to the real draft analysts, Bob McKenzie and Craig Button. -
Hands down the worst GM in the league, which is exactly why Holland should be calling him every chance he gets. Draisaitl for Tatar seems pretty fair to me...

I agree. Other than Dahlin of course.

I'd love to be able to trade both Green AND Daley at the deadline. Unfortunately, I doubt that will happen with two years remaining. Maybe if we signed him to a shorter contract that would have been doable. Oh well, hopefully next year. -
Even more impressive considering his slow start this season. He's currently on a 5 game point streak with 7 points (3 goals, 4 assists) in that time. Future top 4 defenseman in Detroit. He may even get a look this season (after the deadline).

Do you think it would be easier to trade DeKeyser or find a Quincey level replacement to pair him with? I agree that they were a steady pair, but do you think that was all Quincey? I don't. You want to trade him, and I'd be fine with that. But realistically, what sort of return would you expect to get for him? Would you retain salary?

Defense is not a "harder" position to play than forward, but like I said, it is probably a little easier for a defenseman to transition to forward than a forward to transition to defense. But again, it has nothing to do with skating capabilities. It's the way you have to think the game and anticipate plays developing. Most NHLers are phenomenal skaters. I'd even argue that most forwards in the league are better skaters than most defensemen, so it's certainly not the ability (or lack thereof) to skate in any direction that would hinder a forward from playing defense. I played forward my entire life (Novice to Senior) and just recently switched to defense a few years ago in my beer league. It was a HUGE adjustment to go from forward (usually center) to defense. But it had absolutely nothing to do with the skating aspect, or anything physically. It was all about the mental side, mostly positioning. Ericsson is a prime example of a forward that transitioned to defense. Most NHLers don't make that transition, or any transition when it comes to switching positions. Why would they? However, you can be guaranteed that most have played both offense and defense (some even goalie) at some point in their younger days. I've heard quite a few examples of this over the years, but I can't remember many examples off the top of my head. I know Vili Saarijarvi was a forward up until just a few years ago. I'm pretty sure a big name (might have even been Doughty) played forward up until he was 15 or 16. Transitioning from positions as a top player in the world isn't that difficult, but like anything, it's a lot easier the younger you are.

I agree. It's amazing how low most all Red Wings fans are on DeKeyser. Some even go as far as to say they'd eat half his salary for a 7th round draft pick. I would trade DeKeyser, but it would have to be worth it. DD isn't near as bad as fans make it seem, and on a better team, I think he's a legit top 3/4 defenseman. And like you said, he's getting paid as such.
-
I'm not advocating putting a forward back on D, but to say most forwards can't skate well backwards is completely off base. Maybe that's a thing in beer leagues, but most decent NHL players are great skaters forwards, backwards and laterally. The reason you don't see forwards switch to defense or defense switch to forward is because of the mental side of the game rather than anything physical.
-
I think it would depend on what prospects / picks we received, but assuming they were relatively fair value, I'd consider it a good trade deadline. However, I'd question why we traded three pieces, but held onto our biggest trade chip. Green has to be traded. If he wants to come back after his Cup run though, I'd certainly welcome him back at a slightly lesser contract.
-
I think a lot of that is speculation based on the fact that he has a NTC though. I haven't heard or seen any quotes from Green saying that he would only go to a specific one or two teams. The only thing I've heard concrete, is that Green would like to stay in Detroit. I'd be surprised if he wouldn't accept a trade to go to a contending team for a few months for a chance at a Cup, and then try to negotiate a new contract with the Wings this summer. Either way, if Green is only interested in going to Tampa or back to Washington or whatever, I'm sure he'll let Holland know, but I don't think he'd announce it publicly, only to lower the team's leverage. If Green is only willing to waive his NTC to go to Tampa or Washington and Toronto, Pittsburgh, Boston, Nashville or whoever else are interested, you let them all drive the price up and trade him to the best offer between Tampa and Washington.
