    2/2 GDT - Red Wings @ Hurricanes - 7:00 PM EST

We're actually only 6 points out with a game in hand. It's possible that we could be only 4 points out with a game in hand by the end of the day, if Ottawa beats Philadelphia this afternoon and we beat Florida tonight. We could potentially be within a few points or even in a wild card spot three weeks from now, especially if Mrazek keeps up his current level of play. Does anyone really believe Holland will sell at the deadline if we're in the mix for a playoff spot? I don't, and that's what's scary about this situation. Everyone knows that we should sell at the deadline, except probably the one man that matters. Holland's future is unknown at this point, so why would he not go for it again in what could be his last season? Most people in his situation wouldn't be looking beyond this season. Hopefully he still has an eye on the future or it could really f*** this team long term. I've never had a tank mentality, but I truly do believe this team needs to start losing a few more games. Regardless of our positioning at the deadline, we should be selling off assets. That just isn't going to happen if we're even remotely close though. Green has to go. It would be a complete failure to hold on to such a valuable trading chip. I'd also shop Nyquist / Tatar (I'd prefer to trade Tatar, but Nyquist would garner more interest / better return), Helm, Ouellet, Howard...

I've been meaning to catch one of both of their games for a while now. Going to try to watch one or both of these. Thanks!

I agree that Mantha has been pretty bad lately, and it's extremely frustrating when you know what he's capable of. I don't agree that younger players should be held to the same standard as veterans (in most cases). However, when it comes to effort / intensity, that's 100% on the player, no matter the age, and lately I feel that's Mantha's biggest issue. I kind of wonder if it's not something else going on with him though. I mean, he's simply not the player he was toward the end of last season / earlier this season. Is he nursing an injury? We also have to remember that this is his sophomore season. People were hard on Larkin last year, and while Mantha is a couple years older than Larkin, he may be going through a similar thing due to the dreaded sophomore slump... Regardless, Mantha does need to be better on a consistent basis. I think he will be. I still think he's capable of 35 goals, 70 points. Hopefully he puts it all together. We sure as hell need it...

Theodore would be amazing, but no way Vegas gives him up. I still can't believe Anaheim offered him up in the expansion draft to protect Vatanen and Manson... Idiots... Absolutely. I'd love to have Liljegren or Hague, but Foote would be my number one choice of those three. I was big on Johansen a couple years ago in his draft year. He hasn't put up big numbers since, but I still think he'd be a good addition to the pipeline. If it was between Hague and Foote, I'd take Foote for sure, but both would be great additions. Hague is having a great season with Mississauga, but playing in the more offensive league (OHL) helps those numbers for sure. Foote is playing in the most defensive league (WHL), and still putting up great numbers. A top pair of Dahlin and Liljegren would be unreal...

I think retained salary just applies to the cap hit, not actual salary. So if the Islanders traded for him, and we retained 25%, they'd take on a $3,968,750 cap hit, with us retaining $1,322,917. But they'd take on the full $4,250,000 in salary. I could be wrong on that though... Maybe the 25% would apply to both cap hit and actual salary?...

Negotiations should begin with a 1st and their top prospect. Start high, and be willing to come down. Don't start with what you want. Tampa Bay - 1st plus Foote Washington - 1st plus Johansen Toronto - 1st plus Liljegren Vegas - 1st plus Hague ... but of course we'd settle for a first and a mid level prospect... Seriously though, Green is literally the only pending UFA offensive defenseman available. We should get a very nice return for him... If Smith gets us a 2nd and 3rd, Green should get us a 1st plus, minimum...

I've never "given up" on Mrazek, and I know of several others around here that haven't either. I also know of several others that think Mrazek sucks, but aren't as vocal about it. Like CRL said, he's loud, and so is chaps on this topic, but there are people on both sides. I've been saying for months that Mrazek needs a legit shot again. He's been given that. So far, so good. Let's see how he handles the next few games, few weeks, rest of the season. No way would I trade low on him at the trade deadline though.

Anything short of a first, is a gaffe in my opinion. I don't expect a first plus a high end prospect like some have suggested, but a 2nd would be severe underpayment, considering it would likely be in the 56-62 range...

The age gap is too far spread to simply say Howard is whatever to Mrazek "at this point in time"... Who do you think will be more consistent when Mrazek is Howard's age and Howard is 41? Not really a fair comparison is it? Though you'd probably still say Howard because "Mrazek will be sucking it up in a lower tier European League"... Howard is a veteran, and Mrazek is just entering his prime. Of course Howard is more consistent. Zetterberg is more consistent than Athanasiou as well. Does Athanasiou suck just because he's not "consistent" every night? No. People see flashes of brilliance in AA, just like most do in Mrazek. In a rebuild, we should be looking to keep as many of these type players as we can, not trading them for peanuts, and keeping the vets...

Frank Seravalli of TSN thinks that Green could be a good fit with one of Tampa Bay, Washington, Toronto or Vegas, with the Golden Knights being the favorite due to the familiarity between Green and McPhee. https://www.tsn.ca/tradecentre-match-game-mike-green-1.985225

I agree, but I don't even think we'd have to retain salary on the final year of Howard's contract. He is a starting caliber goaltender, and one year at $5.3M isn't bad at all. The only way we retain is if a team interested is up against the cap. If that's the case though, that should significantly increase the return. Yes he is and no we shouldn't unless it's a worthy return. A mid round pick doesn't come close in my opinion.

Mrazek will be starting again tomorrow night. Has he actually stolen back the starters job (again) , or is this all just a ruse to up his trade value to trade him in the next few weeks? I hope / think it may be the former. He's been playing great the past couple weeks. I think it would be a huge mistake to give up on him now, especially if all we're getting back is a mid round draft pick...

Another 3 point night last night in a 7-1 win. That gives him 37 point (19 goals, 18 assists) in 25 games this year, and 6 points (2 goals, 4 assists) in the 3 games since returning from wrist surgery. Keep it going Big Ras!

This was Franzen's MO for the entirety of his career, his prime right on through. I still loved the Mule, despite how frustrating he could be at times. Mrazek is just hitting his prime. Do you think it's even a remote possibility that this could be what we get from Petr through his prime years (26-32)? I do. People forget how young he still is because he's been in the league / in our system for years. Jimmy didn't get acclimated to the NHL until he was 25-26 (same age as Petr now). At that point he had played just 9 games over the span of 4 seasons... I'm not saying this is the Mrazek we'll see every night, but I do believe it could be the Mrazek we see on a much more consistent basis going forward. He may not ever become a Vezina candidate (I still think he could be some day), but he certainly doesn't "suck", and he is more than capable of being a legit starter in this league (for this team) for a long time. Mrazek is clearly upping his trade value, but I think it would be a terrible move to trade him at this point. I love Howard, but if we're moving one of our goalies, I'd move the 34 year old, who is what he is and won't be here beyond the rebuild, over the 26 year old, who still has potential beyond what Howard has ever been.

Burns is a great defenseman, but I certainly wouldn't "sell the farm" for a soon to be 33 year old defenseman, nor would I consider him a player to build the team around. Now, Dahlin on the other hand, that's a defenseman I would build a team around...

I hope Holland does offer Mrazek a qualifying offer, but I'm not too sure he will. If that offer (1 year at $4M) is on the table, the question then is, does Mrazek want to stay in Detroit and continue to battle with Howard for the starters position? I don't think any team (including the Red Wings) are going to offer him a multi-year contract, so the qualifying offer may be best case scenario for Mrazek. No chance he turns it down, unless Holland tells him that he's not qualifying him, but if interested, he will offer 2.5-3M for 2 years, once he hits UFA. And again, unless Mrazek plays lights out (I do believe he's capable) down the stretch, no team is going to offer much, if at all, more than that.

Well that was 4 nights ago (Saturday), but your point stands. He also had another game since then (Sunday) and went pointless in a 3-2 win. I'm hoping he can string together more of those two and three point games. He should be dummying that league. He's not, but I'm sure the injuries have a lot to do with that. Hopefully he's fully recovered after the wrist surgery and can get on a real roll down the stretch. Tri-City should make the playoffs, and he'll have to be a big part if they want to go on any sort of run. Get s*** done Ras!
