Packaging picks for a top 3 pick

I agree that we need a number one center more than a winger, but I do think we need to add a big, right-handed sniper as well, and Tippett could be that guy. I'd definitely take Patrick or Vilardi before him, but after those two it would be a toss-up between the other three for me. Tippett has a bomb of a shot and is being compared to a Kessel type sniper, something we could definitely use... Our biggest needs remains to be defense, but I'm just not that high on any of the defensemen in the top half of the draft. If we can acquire another 1st in a Vanek trade, that's when I'd go hard after defensemen. Foote or Hague would be ideal, but I doubt either will be available late in the first...

Anyone know why Vancouver get a 2nd for Tortorella and we only get a 3rd for Babcock?

Packaging picks for a top 3 pick

I really don't want Liljegren unless we fall way out. No way I'd draft him with a top 3 pick, not even top 5. I'm not that high on Hischier either, we have enough smallish forwards. I want to draft some big, skilled guys. The order I'd pick would be Patrick, Vilardi, Tippett, Rasmussen, Mittelstadt. After those 5 are gone, then I'd start looking at Hischier and Liljegren...

    2017 NHLTrade Deadline Discussion

If we end up with three 1st round picks, Holland should be exempt from any s*** talk for at least a few months... I'll be content with adding a 1st and a 2nd. We could potentially have two 1st's, two 2nd's and two 3rd's, if not more going into next year's draft. But year, I agree with flipping a couple pieces (picks / prospects / roster players) for immediate help on the back end. I'm still hoping Holland will be VERY active at the deadline today / tomorrow, as well as this summer. Off load some bad contracts and get this team back on track...

    Jensen Signed 2 YR Extension

I agree to an extent, but I think for the most part, most of us have somewhat realistic expectations for Jensen as well as most prospects coming up in our system. Just because we are excited about how well he's playing, and that he signed a very nice contract doesn't mean anyone is expecting him to become some sort of stud number one. I'd say his ceiling is 2nd pair, likely making a career as a mobile 3rd pairing guy. I'm excited for some of our D prospects too, but I don't think any of them are upgrades over anything we currently have, including Ericsson. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't love to see Russo in the lineup over Ericsson. That's just a personal preference, based on wanting to get younger while getting rid of a few bad contracts in the process. The organization has been very good at grooming (drafting and developing) their prospects for the most part, but that doesn't mean they haven't made some errors in judgement along the way. Some were very apparent to most fans and as a fan base, we've earned the right to call them out on those. I do believe Jurco was brought up too soon, and mismanaged terribly, I also believe Jensen could have been brought up a year sooner and he would have been just as good last year. You may not agree with that, but that's the way I see it from my perspective.

    Jensen Signed 2 YR Extension

Just another example of player mismanagement by this organization...

    Jensen Signed 2 YR Extension

It's the Red Wing way... Seriously though, what makes it even more mind boggling is the fact that he outplayed and was arguably the most deserving of a spot out of the 4, two years in a row. I've always been a fan of Jensen, but I honestly didn't think he'd ever get an opportunity here...

Yup, prices are through the roof this year. Good year to be a seller. Should be 1st plus for Vanek easily.

    Pulkkinen claimed by Minnesota Wild

Strange move. Why didn't Arizona put a claim in on him? Not that it matters. I doubt Arizona will ever have to give up anything in the way of "future considerations"...

    2017 NHLTrade Deadline Discussion

I agree. But what if the rumors are true and you're offered a 1st round pick. Do you take it? What about a 2nd? I don't think I'd go any lower than a 2nd...

Kyle Quincey being held out of game tonight. Healthy scratch. Pierre LeBrun - "Smart. Every team selling rentals should do that next 2 days." Yes. Yes we should. Please don't play Vanek tomorrow night. Not worth the risk...

    Jensen Signed 2 YR Extension

I'm thinking it was just an easy signing to make. Maybe they wanted to get a deal in place before he had a chance to up his value... Typo I'm assuming... Better question is, did we call up Givani to play 3rd pair defense? EDIT: How do you quote tweets like that amato?

I'm thinking he was just recalled to replace Jurco as the healthy scratch. Anyone else really hoping Vanek is a healthy scratch tomorrow night? I'm nervous as hell that he will play and get injured...

    $800K 2017-18 and $825K 2018-19. Good signing.

    Gustav Nyquist Hearing

I don't think they "need" to go, but either should be moved in the right deal. Although I agree with the Hudler and Filppula comparison, teams do still need those types of secondary scorers. I just think this team needs a different look, and if either can be packaged for a high end defenseman this summer, we need to do it.

    2017 NHLTrade Deadline Discussion

This Sheahan trade rumor is very similar to the Jurco trade in my opinion. I'm not, nor ever was as high on Sheahan as I am Jurco, but I don't think Sheahan is nearly as bad as people like to make him seem either. I know, not a single goal in 58 games, guy sucks right? Having a down year is a huge understatement, but when every player on the team is underperforming (some more than others), you don't just trade off every single player, you "should" look at coaching... Sheahan scored 13 and 14 goals the past two seasons, and 9 in 42 games his first half season. That's great production for a bottom 6 center. I think we should be major sellers at the deadline and even this summer, however I don't think the young kids (25 and under) are the players we should be looking to offload. I think giving up on Jurco was stupid, and the same applies to Sheahan to an extent. However, if the rumors are true (I'm not so sure they are...), and a team is actually offering up a 1st (or even a 2nd), we'd be stupid not to take it...

Tomas Jurco traded to Chicago for a 3rd rounder

I'll admit to some speculation on my part there, but when he comes into the league and makes plays in his first year, then plays with grinders on the 4th line ever since, something happened... I highly doubt he was ever told " don't out stick handle opponents" (whatever that means...), but I do believe 100% he was told to "keep it simple", "be hard on the forcheck", "grind the play down low", or whatever else. Again, no source, but do you honestly think those types of things weren't stressed to our no skill 4th liners?... Anyway, I'm done with this. We'll see how he does in Chicago.

Tomas Jurco traded to Chicago for a 3rd rounder

He absolutely does know how to toe drag, and we would have probably seen it a lot more in Detroit, if he wasn't told by his coach(es), to keep it simple, dump and chase, make the "safe play"... He had unbelievable mitts in junior and in the AHL... What do you think he just forgot how to play? Nope, he was told to not play his skill game and play a "heavy / grinding" game... Why does it matter if he's a Wing or not? We have a trade deadline thread and we have two threads dedicated to one trade that affects the Red Wings in no way. I don't give a s*** about the Bishop trade, so I don't partake in the conversation...

Tomas Jurco traded to Chicago for a 3rd rounder

So sick of the whole "YouTube star" bulls***... Jurco has the skill as a hockey player, not just stick handling challengers... He proved it in junior, and in Grand Rapids, and even his first stint in Detroit when he was actually utilized properly, in the top 9. He clicked on a line with Tatar and Sheahan, but for whatever reason neither Babcock and Blashill reverted back to it. No one is saying Jurco is an elite talent, but he absolutely does have middle 6 NHL talent. Name a none elite player (middle 6 winger) that would have success on a line with the likes of Glendening, Andersson, Miller, etc. There are very few. Imagine how awful Tatar or Nyquist would look with those scrubs. Imagine Mantha coming up this year and playing a game with them, then being scratched for 7 because he didn't produce. It's very easy for a coach to ruin a players career, I just hope for Jurco's sake, he got out of there before it was too late. I don't expect him to be a point per game player in Chicago or anything, but 30-40 points, middle 6 winger is realistic if he's utilized properly, and I think he will be.

Tomas Jurco traded to Chicago for a 3rd rounder

Jurco did show his skill set on the ice. His performance on most nights was good, certainly not bad enough to be the scratch after every game. He did look good when the puck was on his stick, and more often than not made smart plays. You're right though, it was more than just stats, and I believe it was also more than just on-ice performance, it must have been attitude, lack of intensity in practice, or something else behind the scenes. There's just no other explanation for the utter mismanagement in my opinion...

Tomas Jurco traded to Chicago for a 3rd rounder

Nyquist and Tatar were never expected to change their game and become "grinders", nor were they ever played on the 4th line with scrubs. Nyquist and Tatar were put in a position to succeed right from the get-go, Jurco was not. He was mismanaged worse than I've ever seen. I think the fact that he was a big kid (6'1" over 200lbs.) went against him. If he were a smaller player, like the aforementioned, he would have never been expected to play a grinding game, and he would have had more of an opportunity to show of his skill. He will get that opportunity now in Chicago and I think he's will surprise a lot of people. I think a lot of people would agree with the above, but maybe not what I'm about to say... A bit of a bold statement, but I truly believe that if Jurco were utilized properly, and given the same opportunity as the likes of Nyquist and Tatar, he would have been as good or better than both... The talent is definitely there, so I'm excited for him to get an opportunity in Chicago.

Tomas Jurco traded to Chicago for a 3rd rounder

But he gave up a third rounder, so he must believe what he's saying or he wouldn't have made the trade... and quite frankly, I think he's right...
