Jeff Blashill named 27th head coach in Red Wings history

I guess Chelios won't be behind the bench for the Wings next season. He was named assistant coach of the US National Junior Team behind head coach Ron Wilson. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2015/06/detroit_red_wings_advisor_chri.html#incart_sms_app

    2015 Draft

If we're looking to move up in the draft (we aren't, but it sure is fun to fantasize...) I'd want to trade for the 8th-12th pick, not the 3rd. It wouldn't be half as costly, and we need a defenseman so I would go after Werenski. What do people think it would cost to move up and draft this kid? I'd offer our 19th overall, Nyquist / Tatar, Ouellet / Marchenko and Kindl... Not enough?

Jeff Blashill named 27th head coach in Red Wings history

I'm pretty sure they're working on a new multi-year deal for Granato, and it's still looking like they will have Chelios in some sort of assistant coaching role as well...

Wings open to trading Mantha and/or their 1st Round Pick

Dickie, I don't disagree. The Oilers very well may turn down that trade proposal, but I do believe in the end, they would win that trade. I also agree on Sheahan, and I think he may be better suited for 3rd line center than 2nd, but he does have the potential to get there. Getting a guy with better potential (especially a center) is definitely a good idea, but if we're going to make a huge trade like that, getting rid of some really nice pieces, I'd prefer go with more of a sure thing. I also think we should be targeting a more pressing need right now and that's defense...

    2015 Draft

WingedWheel91 - ....... nor did I say that he would be drafted before McDavid, Eichel or Strome... I already told you the likely order "I" believe it would have gone, and that has him being drafted after those 3 guys as well as Hanifin... I don't think anyone is underestimating how deep this draft is at all. It will likely be the best draft class since '03, maybe even better... Sure, there are people that are probably overhyping Larkin, but that's the fun of being a fan, is it not? This kid is AWWWESOME!!!

Wings open to trading Mantha and/or their 1st Round Pick

I don't necessarily think it would be a bad trade but I still wouldn't do it. My bet would be that Edmonton wins that trade in 5 years time. Sure, all signs point toward Drailsaitl being a stud top line center, but like Mantha, at this point it's all just potential. He hasn't "proven" anything at the NHL level yet. His ceiling is a very good top line center, but I t's possible he tops out at a good 2nd line center. I think Sheahan will be that in a year or two. Then on top of that we lose a very high end prospect in Mantha, that for whatever reason, a lot of people have seem to given up on, after one season of pro... as well as a decent defense prospect in Ouellet and we also move back in this years draft... No Thanks!!!

    Free agents this off season

jimmy, you'd rather Johnny Oduya over Franson, Green or Phaneuf? Seriously? He's the opposite of what we should be looking for. We need a top 4 puck moving defenseman that can put up some points, preferably in his prime, not a bottom pairing shut down defenseman...

    2015 Draft

It's an impossible debate to successfully partake in... But all of those guys would go ahead of him regardless?... No one knows where Larkin would go in this draft, but I believe he would be a top 5 pick for sure after his breakout season last year. Mantha will be fine. People need to relax on this kid. I just hope Holland stays true to his word and gives him "more time to develop".

2015 SCF : Chicago Blackhawks vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

No way, the Hawks lose Seabrook. Not going to happen.

    2015 Draft

Definitely not McDavid or Eichel, no one would dispute that, but I wouldn't be shocked if he would have been projected to go anywhere after that. I think it's very reasonable to believe that it could have potentially went down something like this: 1. McDavid, 2. Eichel, 3. Hanifin, 4. Strome, 5. Larkin, 6. Marner... I think anyone after the first two there are pretty much interchangeable. Either way, I believe we have a great player in Larkin. One that has the potential to be as good as any of these guys.

    2015 Draft

If Larkin was two months younger, he would have been draft eligible in this years draft, and he would have been a top 3-5 pick for sure.

    2015 Draft

Agreed. Roy is probably my number one choice if we keep our 19th pick. I'd love to move back and still be able to grab Roy later in the 1st, and grab Spencer in the 2nd...

    Free agents this off season

xtrememachine1, there is a buyout period every year, starting on June 15th or 48 hours after the final game of the playoffs (whichever is later), and ends on June 30th. So, by Thursday of this week, teams will be able to buyout contracts. You are probably confusing this with the Compliance Buyout period which was a two year window (each off-season) where teams could have bought out up to two players on their team without it costing anything against the salary cap. This however, costs teams between 1/3 (under 26 years of age) - 2/3 (over 26) of the total salary divided over twice the number of years left on the contract. If Weiss were bought out next offseason it would cost us $4.9M X 2 X 2/3 / 4 = approximately $1.633M per year for 4 seasons. Where have you heard that Franzen has been cleared to play? All I've heard is that he is working hard to get to where he needs to be, and that the team is hopeful he can come back... I believe Babcock was a huge reason we almost landed Phaneuf, I honestly don't see him being moved, and certainly not to the Wings...

Bring Back The Bruise Bros - 1. I wouldn't say that Tatar or Nyquist are "trade bait", but I do believe if the right deal came along for a top 4 defenseman, they could potentially be dealt. 2. My guess is that Weiss remains under contract for another season to see if he can be at least remotely productive under a new coach. If he's still not producing or not playing, he will likely be bought out next offseason. 3. Franzen along with management are hopeful that he can make a comeback, but I think he will likely stay on LTIR for the foreseeable future. 4. Smith will definitely be re-signed, but like Nyquist and Tatar, he could be part of a package to bring in a defenseman. 5. There are still a lot of rumors floating around about a trade with Toronto for Phaneuf. I personally don't see it happening. My bet is we sign a free agent or go with the kids. 6. Carl Soderberg and Matt Beleskey are the names I've been hearing floating around. I don't really want to add much of anything up front unless it's a significant upgrade and/or we lose a forward or two in a trade over the summer...

Things you would like to see for 2015-16 Season

Andy Pred 48, the chances of us moving up within the top 5 to grab Hanifin are about zero, but I'd love if we could move up to draft Werenski... nawein, I'd love to have Justin Faulk (probably one of my favorite young defensemen), and you're probably pretty accurate in what they'd ask for, but if that's what it cost, I doubt I'd do it...

I may be in the minority here, but I have zero interest in Byfuglien...

Things you would like to see for 2015-16 Season

I'd do that in a heartbeat, unfortunately I don't think that gets it done. I'm thinking it would cost more like Nyquist, Mantha and our 2015 1st for any of those guys...

What do you mean by "mountains"? I'd love to have Seabrook, Trouba or Faulk... What would you offer up for any of these guys?

Things you would like to see for 2015-16 Season

Well we don't have a 2nd this year, so depending on what prospect you're willing to give up, I don't see our 2016 2nd and a low end prospect being enough. In my opinion, Miller is better than any defense prospect we have in the system right now, so we'd have to give up Ouellet / Marchenko as well as another asset. I'd be reluctant to give up Sproul, despite his recent struggles, because I do still believe he has the highest ceiling. I think Ouellet and Nastasiuk is fair value, but I'm still not sure LA would be interested in that trade.

Things you would like to see for 2015-16 Season

I have no idea what it would cost to get Miller but I'd offer something along the lines of Ouellet and Nastasiuk... Probably not enough but that's where I'd start...

Wings open to trading Mantha and/or their 1st Round Pick

They didn't "drop the ball" on anything... They refused to trade him, for good reason, and they're not all of a sudden trying to trade him. Mantha isn't going anywhere. He will get another season in Grand Rapids and likely push for a spot in Detroit in 2016-17. My bet is he scores at or close to a point per game next season for the Griffins. People are acting like he's a bust after one season of pro...

Wings open to trading Mantha and/or their 1st Round Pick

Put me in the group of people that would prefer to trade one of Nyquist or Tatar before either Larkin or Mantha.

Things you would like to see for 2015-16 Season

I've been high on Miller for a while, and would love to get him in Detroit, but I doubt he's going anywhere. I watched him a fair bit in junior when he was Sproul's teammate in Sault Ste. Marie. I remember hoping that we would draft him the following year, but unfortunately he was grabbed by L.A. He's a very good offensive defenseman, with a cannon of a shot. He won the hardest shot competition in the AHL All-Star Game with a 105.5MPH shot. I'd give up a fair amount for this kid...

    Free agents this off season

I love both Nyquist and Tatar but I would absolutely trade one of them for an upgrade on the back end (top 4 defenseman). We have a ton of forwards coming over the next few seasons, more than we'll have room for.

Wings open to trading Mantha and/or their 1st Round Pick

I don't want to trade Mantha, but in the right deal I would for sure. Our 2015 1st round pick, Mantha, Ouellet / Marchenko for a top 4 defenseman... Package to Colorado for Erik Johnson, to Winnipeg for Jacob Trouba, or to Carolina for Justin Faulk... Absolutely.
