    Are the Wings a Contender?

You really think the loss of Thornton has anything to do with the Bruins regression? Not the loss of Boychuk & Iginla, the improvement of the Lightning, Canadians, Wings & Leafs (even Panthers), or the injuries to Chara & Krejci Thornton currently sits on the Panthers with 1 goal and 1 assist in 22 games with a -5 rating, and this "production" is with an increased TOI/G.

    12/19 GDT : Islanders 2 at Red Wings 1

e_prime said it best "Most of these issues are slight hiccups. Not crippling long term or short term." NO GM is perfect, not every contract on your team is going to work out exactly as you hoped. These are such small moves you are complaining about, which is exactly my point. When it comes to important stuff (keeping your best players, developing young talent, keeping a happy locker room, not making bad trades, not making crippling UFA signings, he does a great job) You act like keeping Nyquist in the minors a bit longer then "he should have" hurt this team. Look at him now....does his development look hurt? Does Tatar's? I think we should all look at the Oilers as an example of how just throwing kids out there can hurt them, and stunt their development. I'm perfectly happy with the prospects we have drafted and developed, and now I feel we are in the position we are in because of it.

    12/19 GDT : Islanders 2 at Red Wings 1

I completely disagree with that. A GM who is poor at UFA signings and trading, is a GM who makes bad trades and signs stupid contracts (ie. Philly). Pulling off a good move as a GM is an obvious trait that makes you a good GM, but not making stupid moves may even be more important. Just wait until July 1st and wait to see all the awful signings, it's mind blowing. Luckily, Holland knows when to stop in the negotiation process which is why we rarely get stuck with horrible contracts. Ive said the before and I will say it again, the fact that Holland's "worst" moves are trading essentially Andrei Vasilevski for Kyle Quincey, resigning Quincey, and promising to sign Cleary after his playoff run in 2012 shows how good he is. These are not moves that cripple a team. If you are a fan who needs immediate gratification, or Blockbuster moves, go become a Philly fan because your not going to get it with Holland, and I for one am happy about that.

Do we need a trade to get our offence going ?

lol no worries. When I say this is an accurate proposal, I dont mean this is what I would do, I mean this is what I think it would take to get Hall. I dont think Holland would ever give all this up for him. But I guess you never know, I wouldn't think Seguin would have gone for as little as he did, but he did.

Do we need a trade to get our offence going ?

Here is an interesting article up about this: http://thehockeywriters.com/trade-talk-shopping-taylor-hall/ They give a proposal from a few teams, and I think this is much more accurate then the extreme's on both ends posted in this thread. For Detroit, here is their proposal and analysis: To Detroit Red Wings = Taylor Hall and Jeff Petry To Edmonton Oilers = Riley Sheahan, Anthony Mantha, Teemu Pulkkinen and Ryan Sproul ANALYSIS: There is both quantity and quality in this return package. Sheahan is a top-nine centre with size, Mantha is one of the best power-forward prospects in the league, Pulkkinen is leading the AHL in scoring and a sniper at that level, and Sproul is a gifted offensive defenceman. Detroit is the only team in the league that could afford to move four top prospects like that without totally depleting its pipeline. The Red Wings know Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg don’t have many years left, not to mention coach Mike Babcock’s contract is expiring, so they might be willing to go all-in for another Cup run. Adding Hall up front would be huge and Petry would fit the bill as that right-handed defenceman Detroit has been searching for, plus he’s a Michigan native who would almost certainly re-sign with the Red Wings.

slava voynov suspended after domestic violence arrest

Okay. I couldn't remember the Varlamov situation to well, so I looked it up. What I read on CBC.ca is the following (link posted below): "Prosecutors said Friday that they are dropping a domestic violence case against Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov because they have new information leading them to believe they couldn't win a conviction." In the case of Voynov, he was actually charged with a felony count of domestic violence. Similar accusations as Varlamov, but different assessment from law enforcement. Either way, I am curious what you are trying to say here: Are you saying that Varlamov should have faced harsher penalty when he was initially put into police custody? Or are you saying that the NHL is acting to harsh with Voynov? If you worked with the NHL, what would you do? Personally I feel that when these types of accusations happen, it puts the NHL in a very tough situation. If I were Bettman, I wouldn't want to make judgements myself, I feel situations like this need to be assessed by people who see these things every day (ie. law enforcement, court system). When you try to become judge, jury, and executioner you will end up in a Goodell situation. I would likely link my disciplinary process to what the law enforcement/court system decide. So for example, if law enforcement decided not to press charges, I would let him play. You wouldn't want to run into a situation where if someone was falsely accused and the police deemed this, the NHL still suspends. But, if the system deems there is enough evidence to go to court, I would indefinitely suspend him. http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/semyon-varlamov-s-domestic-violence-case-dropped-1.2472299

slava voynov suspended after domestic violence arrest

The Dany Heatley incident happened in 2003. As recent as it may feel, that is 11 years ago. Over an 11 year time period you can expect the disciplinary process of any league to change. If the Heatley incident happened last year, maybe you could compare the two (though I still feel they are way too different). A completely differant incident 11 years ago, you really cant compare the two.
  8. We are in a 3 game losing streak, where 2 of the 3 losses were in the shootout and the team we lost to twice is the hottest team in hockey in their last 10 games. It happens. If a 3 game losing streak is the worst of our problems, this is a pretty damn good season! I think every poster on this board would take the position we are in right now if it was told to them before the season. We cant go 82-0, losing streaks will happen. As long as the winning streaks out way the losing streaks, we will be okay.
  9. Yes and No, while those 2 teams do have more history then any team Canadian (or American, maybe minus the Wings), it all depends on where you grow up. I'm sure someone from Western Canada would disagree. Though, from my perspective (living in Ontario) I would agree with you.The Leafs are very polarizing (similar to the Yankees) the media cant stop talking about them and they have a die hard fan base. But they also have a ton of people who cant stand them due to the ridiculous amount of media they get.

    Vaya con dios Damien Brunner

At the end of the day, it all ends at the player. An agent can give advice, but the player has the ultimate decision.

    Vaya con dios Damien Brunner

Agreed number9. A Professional athlete having confidence in his abilities and wanting an opportunity where he can showcase his skill set is not a bad attitude. If he was signed to a contract, then refused to play on the third line, that would be a bad attitude. You can argue Brunner lacked self awareness in his abilities, but nothing he did screamed bad attitude to me. He simply chose to leave to go to another team, something thousands of UFA's have done in the past, and will continue to do in the future.
  12. So to prevent yourself from feeling disappointed, you feel negative and pessimistic all the time. How is that better? Constantly posting about worst case scenario's as if they are inevitable facts is not a better way to go about things.

12/10 GDT - Maple Leafs 2 at Red Wings 1 (SO)

I was there live, and from my vantage point we dominated that game. I hate losing this way, it gives me flashbacks of 2003-2006. The way I look at it, if we keep playing like this we are going to win a hell of a lot more then we are going to lose.
  14. I completely agree! Its funny how people were posting just a few months ago how this team was headed down the toilet. I think in this very thread people went off on how Holland ruined this team and Babcock couldn't wait to get out.

Jimmy sucks in a shootout Howard

I love Howard, and I think he is one of the most underrated goalies in the league, but he is really struggling in the shootout this year. According to ESPN, his save % in the Shootout is 30%. Second worst in the NHL amongst starting goalies. With that being said, I have faith in Jimmy. I'm sure he will work on this and get better. We are #1 in the conference right now and Jimmy is a HUGE part of that. I will take him being bad in the shootout if that's his biggest flaw. Come playoff time, that means nothing anyways.

Mike Green is not healthy, he has been on IR since November 22nd.

Do we need a trade to get our offence going ?

Franzen is a good player, and I like having him on the Wings, but no doubt the guy has his issues. With age, he is only more likely to get hurt more and more. If the right trade came around for the right player, I would have no problem moving him. Trading him during one of his peaks would be a smart move if you plan on trading him. Depends on who is coming back the other way. Green for example is a UFA at the end of the year. I wouldnt want to trade Helm, Backman and a 1st for a rental player who is injury prone. Yandle I would take, dont know much about Bogosian, and Wisniewski I am up in the air about. I would need to research him a bit more.

    Oilers schedule presser tomorrow

I have no hate for Buffalo either, but I guess I look at everything in a "how does this effect the Wings" way.

    Oilers schedule presser tomorrow

I agree with you, they have had top pick after top pick. Its not that I want Edmonton to necessarily get that pick, I just don't want it to be Florida or Buffalo (though Florida is surprising me this year, and don't seem to be in the basement). Edmonton just seems like the most likely team to take it away from them. I guess I'll hope for Carolina lol.

    Oilers schedule presser tomorrow

I hope the Oilers get McDavid and not Buffalo orFlorida. Last thing I want is a franchise player helping turn around a team in our division. With Tampa Bay, Montreal, Boston and Toronto our division is hard enough.

Do we need a trade to get our offence going ?

17 points in 21 games is dead weight??? Franzen has his issues, and he is definitely streaky, but to call him "dead weight" is a tad extreme.

Devils sign Brunner 2 yrs. $2.5 million AAV

I'm pretty sure if we put a claim in, we get him over the Pens because they are above us in the standings. Though, im not 100% sure how the new CBA works in regards to this.

Different time though, we are no longer in their conference.

Devils sign Brunner 2 yrs. $2.5 million AAV

That's not an option, with a waiver claim we would be picking up his existing contract of 1 year 2.5 million (though the cap hit would be about 30% of that).
