Same here. He was the best player on a team that was bound for a cup run, why give that up to go to a re-building team. Its one thing with JT/NYI as the NYI are bound for nothing. Stamkos would have been crazy to leave TB, especially when you consider the tax breaks. Wings fans that hated Holland created that rumor that he burned Detroit, but there was nothing to it. Ya you probably created it. 0-6

He will leave at some point, the question is when. I dont see it being next year either, but Yzerman is a young guy and has plenty of years left as a GM. At some point I think he will come home, may be in 2030 lol, but I think it will happen eventually.
-
He never actually hit free agency. He met with Yzerman and agreed to stay in TB. Why would he take a "courtesy meeting" with Detroit once Yzerman obviously told him what he wanted to hear. The point Lefty was making which I agree with, is had Stamkos left TB, we were a team in the running.
-
Of course, to be honest I dont think there has been a comparable UFA to JT since Suter. This is why I was saying you cant say big time UFA's dont want to come here, in reality there are no more big time UFA's. Every UFA pool has been a poor pool for almost a decade.
-
Yzerman has 1 more year under contract with TB.
-
A) There is really no such thing as big time free agents B) When it comes to top tier UFA's, we have landed plenty. The year Alfie came here, he was I believe a top 5 UFA. Weiss was also top 5 Green was ranked #1 Nielsen was ranked top 5 You can criticize the results, sure. But they were all top UFA's who we went after and got. Just because Suter chose Minny over us doesn't mean nobody wants to come here. Sorry, but i hate when people push this false narrative.

This is the kind of thinking that can get teams in trouble, when hiring for a position like this don't limit your choices to appease certain fans. I am 100% fine with going outside of the organization IF the person outside of the organization is the best choice. But to bring someone in who may be inferior to someone in house just for "PR" reasons is a mistake. Hire the best candidate, period.
-
I dont think this would get him, but for fun. Lets say AA, 2019 1st round pick, 2020 2nd round pick for Karlsson and Karlsson is signed for 8 years.
-
For everyone against this......what would your opinion be if it was a sign-and-trade?
-
Is this the Frank Grimes school of logic? Always think the worst so can be "positively surprised" if things work out. We probably won't land him, but dont act like getting him is like winning the actual lottery. If we finish near the bottom, we very well could.
-
Can you please clarify what you mean. Are you saying that haven't been able to land a big name free agent? (ie. they have struck out with all big names) Or are you saying that every big name free agent they brought in has been bad? (ie. they have struck out with you they chose to bring in)
-
Shoot, sorry. Stupid spellcheck.
-
Agreed. At this point I want either young kids with upside, or vets that can help the young kids with upside. Young players who are ok that appear to have hit their ceiling are guys I am not really that interested in. I may want to keep one of XO/Jensen because you need to have healthy scratches, but they would do better elsewhere on a team that may need a slight upgrade on their 3rd pairing.
-
I'd accept lower, but a second is what I would hope for.
-
I say we offer Howard for Elliot and a 2nd round pick.
-
Just thought I would break down his major moves (Points wise) as far as how the players involved are playing this season. The Oilers really really seemed to give up a lot for a very little return. Pretty bad for the man who is famously known for the Seguin/Eriksson trade. The Hall trade I get, they were hoping for a legit top pairing guy, but I just don't understand the Eberle trade. Eberle for Strome Eberle - 58GP - 19 Goals, 23 Assists for 42 Points Strome - 55GP - 7 Goals, 15 Assists for 22 Points Hall for Larson Larson - 40GP - 3 Goals, 3 Assists for 6 Points Hall - 51GP - 23 Goals 36 Assists for 59 Points Schultz for a 3rd (Filip Berglund) Schultz - 41 GP - 3 Goals, 14 Assists for 17 Points
-
The Leafs traded their 1st round pick to Boston in the Phil Kessel trade, that was the pick that ended up being Seguin.
-
I'd be fine with Draper taking over as GM. I just want the best candidate, and the last two guys that worked under Holland (Yzerman/Nill) are doing ok.
-
Im not going to lie and say I watched him this year, I haven't. Is he really worse then Jensen/XO? Yikes Either way, my logic is that these are the kinds of players I want to bring on. Guys with a potential upside on 1 year deals that we can trade at the deadline. You're basically buying draft picks which is smart given where we are.
-
I think the more appropriate label would be the worst "trader" (for lack of a better term) of the modern era. His ability to make trades is awful as he seem to lose big every single time.
-
For the record, I am not advocating we bring back Smith. What I am saying, is if he was bought out and wanted to come back here on a 1 year/PTO /Booth style deal, I would do it. Worst case, he sucks and we cut him. Best case, he looks good and we trade him to the Rangers for a 2nd and a 3rd
-
If we could bring Smith back on a 1 year 1mil deal, I would take him over Jensen or XO, as long as he could get back into shape.
-
Sure maybe, but they did it because he is owed less cash. The cap hit Ottawa takes with this move actually goes up. They clearly care more about saving actual cash then clearing cap space.
-
Ya that would be frustrating, that's one thing we as Wings fans are lucky for. Illitch's have never been hesitant to spend.
-
Do you mean "prefer a buyout"? Players can't accept or reject a buyout. I would have to imagine that if he was bought out, some team would likely give him a shot with a PTO at least, if not a 1 year deal.
