Athanasiou Signed 1 year $1.4 mil

If there was a clause in my contract saying that I was not able to leave my job for another job, then yes.

    Opening night roster v Wild.

So the Blackhawks traded a 3rd round pick to us for Jurco, protected him in the expansion draft, then waived him? I guess the expansion draft part makes some sense, as they essentially gave up TVR so LV would take Kruger, but considering LV then traded Kruger, Chicago clearly misread the market. Not a good look on Bowman.

I think he gets claimed, some posters on here (not you) dont give him enough credit. He's obviously not an elite goalie, or even a starter, but he very well could be a decent backup on the right team. But hey, according to some "he's nowhere near NHL caliber".

    The 13th F......

Ya, and it says they cut PA.
  5. This really sucks As a kid I can remember watching the games on channel 50, with Dave & Mickey. Those are the voices I grew on on, too bad it had to end this way. My condolences to his friends and family.

    The 13th F......

I believe a 2 way deal means that he does have to pass through waivers, but if he gets through 100% of his cap hit goes through as well and his pay may change. I could be wrong though. I think you are only waiver exempt when you have under X amount of games played which would not apply to him.

I see where you are coming from in regards to Abby & Helm, but I disagree with the DD contract. He's a bit overpaid, sure. But for a team that has struggled mightily in the D department, you need to lock up your only legit top 4 young D-man. The issue with DD is that last year he played first pairing and fans expected top pairing production from him, same issue fans have with Nyquist/Tatar. Put DD back on 2nd pairing where he belongs with a solid partner and nobody will have an issue with him. 5mil for a top 4 guy his his age is not that bad. If you could snap your finger and just 3 of E, Howard, Abby, Helm, and Nielsen were gone, nobody would even care about DD's contract.

I could see this. The more money RFA's get paid, means less money for UFA's/vets in a capped system. I could actually see the PA being fine with it to for that very reason, though MCDavid specifically is a bit of an outlier.

    Worst Contracts by Team

I don't disagree with the Suter part, the problem was he came with Parise. Two players at 13 years each with a cap hit of 7.5 each will really hurt them in a few years especially if those two regress.

    Pierre McGuire on Wings-Tavares

No he wasnt, so I guess if you include AA that will be around 2mil, but then if you get rid of Sheahan now it essentially offsets that. So if I dont count Sheahan's 2mil, but count the extra 966,000 left at the moment, it gives us 13.2 rather then 14.3. I still think we can do it cap wise if JT agreed to come here. If it meant signing JT or not signing JT, I think Holland would buyout E, trade Helm etc.

Those contracts are ridiculous, I'm pretty sure they are on the book for another decade.

    Pierre McGuire on Wings-Tavares

Green - 6mil, Weiss' cap hit goes down 1mil, trade Howard (5.3 mil), Sheahan is off the books. That right there is 14.3 million. You essentially need to move/buyout/LTIR one more piece (ie. a Kronwall, E, Helm Abby etc.) and it should be no problem to re-sign Larkin, Mantha, and sign JT.

    Pre-Season Games

If we are just talking from when you walk in, to when you walk out....I will say this. They really did create an amazing atmosphere outside. From restaurants, to big screen TV's, to a stage where they have a band play, its a really cool atmosphere. If anyone is familiar with what Toronto has for the Leafs and Raps outside (I think they call it Jurassic Park) the Red Wings definitely tried to create that environment. Once you get in, the place is amazing as well. There is a bathroom at every corner (NO MORE TROUGH's!!), a giant proshop but overpriced though (an Eric Tangradi jersey was $220). There are a lot of cool statues, banners etc. The only thing I didnt like was my seat. I sat in the upper bowl near the top, and I really felt away from everything. I could only see half of the tron, and it felt like I was looking straight down opposed to the Joe where the view was great from pretty much everywhere and there really were no bad seats with the exception of a few small sections. The feel was cool, but the arena was not close to full so I'm sure sold out it would be amazing! All in all, I would strongly recommend it, but I think if you sit lower bowl you will have a much better experience opposed to the Joe where the upper bowl was still a cool place to sit. Then again, maybe the upper bowl thing was just where I sat. I did had a restaurant hanging in my face which was kind of weird (I know that sounds odd, but if you see it you will know what I mean).

    Pre-Season Games

The sound was definitely an issue yesterday. The TV's in the upper bowl and the the sound were out of sync, this was especially apparent during the anthem, and the sound in general was just off. I'm not sure if they need to set their base/treble settings better, but it was annoying. I wouldn't say someone should be fired, it was the first pre-season game, this is when you work out the kinks. It's funny, some guy in my section was screaming about all the calls "LET THEM PLAY REF, ITS THE PRE SEASON!!!!" and some guy completely shut him up, as he had no counter to "Of course they are going to call a lot of penalties, these teams want to practice their power-play/PK". It was like the message board coming to life lol.

My earlier response was done quickly from the game. Now that I am paying more attention to what you actually wrote I will address each part as its much more pissy then I realized. "Oh," the apologists will say, " most of those players were drafted higher or have played another year in the NHL." Doesn't matter. If anything, the fact that he put up those numbers at a younger age than they did suggest he cold be better. As far as the draft part goes, who made this argument? I don't give a crap where someone was drafted, its about their production. As far as how many years a player has played, that does matter as its simple statistics and you don't need a PhD to understand this. The smaller the sample size, the less likely you are at getting an accurate picture of what a player can do. If AA put up those numbers 2 years in a row, you're damn right it matters, just because it doesnt matter to you means nothing. The other argument is "well, what will they have to pay Mantha and Larkin if AA gets $2.5?" The answer is market value, and it wouldn't be an issue if not for all of the bad contracts, which is why I got so pissed that every UFA signed by Holland lately got " just $500k or so too much." Kissazz and the rest of the Holland slappy crew said it wasn't a big deal when anyone who understood basic math could figure out that $500k too much for each of 6 or 7 players adds up to a lot of money. Again, why are you so pissy? You're trying to create this false narrative that everyone is pro Holland and you are attempting to twist any logical point people make into a "You're just a Holland slappy" narrative in a failed attempt to dismiss their point. I have said it before, and I will say it again, I don't necessarily disagree with a lot of the points you try to make, I don't think you are a dumb poster, what I argue is your over the top nature and the extreme's you go to when making the points. Secondly, it's not the 500K extra a few players on this team are being paid that is hurting this team, check other payrolls, that is just the NHL and a product of unrestricted free agency. What is hurting this team is the amount of contracts given out to mid range players. Take away say Helm, Glendening, and E's contracts, and we are not in anymore cap trouble. Nielsen was an absolute stupid signing, even though in a vacuum it' isn't "horrible." They got an aging guy who has never been more than a 2nd line center and who is declining into solidly 3C ability to help make up for losing one of the best Wings players in the last 40 years, and he helped lead them to their worst season in decades. Glad we had him so they could finish next to last in the conference instead of last, that would have been REALLY embarrassing! If we're REALLY lucky, maybe the team will a;; miraculously rebound and they'll get the 8th seed this year and get swept, losing any shot of a top 3 pick in the draft. I have said many many many times on here that I didn't like the Nielsen signing, not sure why you are using this in a point towards me. The only thing I ever said about him to you, was when you were ranting about how he was not a 2C, I showed stats proving he was a low end 2C, high end 3C. This does not mean I liked the signing, or that I disagreed with the main aspect of your point. Don't sign Nielsen to that deal, everyone has plenty of room to sign. Don't give GLendening double what he's worth, AA can sign. Don't pay grinders approaching their 30th birthday too much, AA can sign and they won't have to be concerned about Mantha and Larkin's next deals. I don't disagree with most of this, and I dont think others do either. Not sure why you insist on ranting about this in every other post. The only thing I would counter here, is that I believe Holland is playing hardball with AA because precedents set in RFA negotiations are different then one's set in UFA negotiations. Does that mean that by thinking this I like all the UFA signings? No.

Athanasiou Signed 1 year $1.4 mil

Ok......I have a feeling you misinterpreted something I said, because this post has nothing to do with my question, and I don't even necessarily disagree with a lot of these point. My post to Bill saying "I asked Dickie" was because Bill just posted a link to Abby's profile which you and I both know is not a comparable. Maybe its a bad contract, but thats not a comparable. You said: I said: So I again ask.....if you are going to cite "the market" I am just asking who you are talking about? I am not saying you are wrong so no need to get defensive. I truthfully want to know what the comparables are.

Athanasiou Signed 1 year $1.4 mil

I think there are alot of holes in that argument as well. With that logic, if you are a 20 goal scorer on a team filled with other 20 goal scorers, then your value shouldn't be as high, and as a result take less money. That would never fly in arbitration or negotiation. For that same logic, a 20 goal scorer on a bad team, would never be paid more simply because the team he plays on is bad.

    Pierre McGuire on Wings-Tavares

To be fair though, we have no idea how he thinks, this is just Frank's theory. By your self awareness comment, I assume you are insinuating that JT does not give us a chance, and us not realizing that is a symptom of a present lack of awareness?

Not sure why I ask as I know this will lead to more trolling, but I have no idea what you are talking about. What mistake?
  21. kliq

    Pierre McGuire on Wings-Tavares

I dont think its fair to say that this team doesnt have a chance to win a cup in the next 7 years (I say 7 because that is what JT will sign for). Parity is real, teams can go from first to worst or worst to first in a season or two now a days. Please do not mistake this with me saying that we WILL win a cup in the next 7 years, what I am saying is that "The guy wants to win a cup not be part of another team that doesn't have any chance at doing so" is simply an incorrect statement. With JT, our top 6 becomes a very good top 6, and with Abby, Helm etc. playing in the bottom 6, that will become very good as well for a bottom 6. If we can fix the D, there is no reason to think that we can't be contenders in a few years. *edit* we could still not make the playoffs this year and get a top pick AND still sign JT. Its not as if only one or the other will happen. It could be both, it could be neither, who knows how the season will play out.
  22. kliq

    Pierre McGuire on Wings-Tavares

Why would JT come to Detroit? Because a top 6 of JT, Zetterberg, improved versions of Mantha/Larkin, Nyquist, and Tatar is a very good top 6. And despite what you say about us, we are still the Detroit Red Wings and that means something. Same reason why Babs went to the Leafs and 2 years ago they were a bigger s*** show then us. The days of tanking for the 1st overall pick are not what they used to be. Didn't Colorado/Philly teach you anything this year?

Athanasiou Signed 1 year $1.4 mil

    1) I asked Dickie 2) Abby was a UFA, AA is an RFA 3) Abby was an 8? year vet, AA only has 1 full season under his belt These are not comparable. I was looking for comparable players. What that means are players who are of similar age, with similar experience, and similar output. You know Malkin is Pittsburgh's 2C right?
  24. kliq

What are your comparable that define what the market is?
  25. kliq

Athanasiou Signed 1 year $1.4 mil

At the end of the day its a business, and AA having no leverage is just what comes with not being arbitration eligible. Ferris can demand whatever he wants, but Holland has all the leverage here. Sure AA can leave eventually when he becomes a UFA, but if Holland wants to trade him at some point (which I think he does) you want that contract as team friendly as possible to maximize your return. If you are a player like McDavid, then sure the player has leverage because the fear of losing a player like that would be devastating but when you are a 3rd liner with one season under your belt, its advantage team. Also I dont think 1.9 is low-balling, it may be a bit less then he is worth, but I believe comparable contracts are around the 2.1 - 2-3 range. Low-balling would be if Holland offered 1.1mil.
