I agree with all of this. JT coming here would be in some ways similar to Babs going to TO. It's an opportunity to help turn something around and by doing it cementing your legacy.

Being over the top doesn't help get your point across, it just kills your credibility. In all seriousness, are you trying to say he is one of the worst top pairing D in the league? Or worst in general? If you are saying first pairing D, that is not on him, that means he is being miscast. If you are implying in general, then like @krsmith17 said, you lose all creditiblity.

I guess it all depends on the development of our players. Throw in JT and our forwards look ALOT better especially if our kids get better. Then Z drops down to second line and we have a very good top 6.

Holland is hesitant to makes trades, thats for sure. But when it comes to BIG name UFA's, he always goes for it. Holland is the kind of GM who only trades if he has to, this is a situation that I think would motivate him. For example, trading a guy like Glendening just to clear cap space, Holland wont do. Trading a guy like Glendening because he just signed JT, that I think he would do in a heartbeat. (just using Luke as an example, Helm, Abby, E whomever could be used in my example).

Holland could do it. We do have to re-sign Mantha/Larkin (lets say 5-6 million total) and JT would likely want around 10, that means we need 16mil in cap space. Green is a UFA (6mil), Howard can be traded with 1 year left (5.3 mil), Weiss's cap hit drops (1mil). That right there is 12.3 million. I'm sure we can clear 3.7 mil if we needed to. In this type of situation, I'd be fine buying out a player like E, or if Kronwall goes LTIR......problem solved. Abby/Helm/Glendening would not screw us from getting JT like some may think.

I don't think this has anything to do with the cap situation, I think it's about not creating a precedent in regards to RFA's. We only have around $966,000 to spend and Holland has offered AA I believe 1-9-2.1mil meaning he obviously will make a move once he gets AA signed. I see where you are coming from with the first sentence, but what makes you put him at 2.25-3mil? I am not even arguing you, just wondering what your comparable's are.

I dont think it would take away from anything, if anything I think it would make opening night seem absolutely gigantic. With that being said, I dont think they will do that night either as for things like that they usually take a nothing game and jack up the prices. Babs didnt want Feds back playing on the team, he couldnt care less about the jersey being retired.

Kessel.....I know Kessel is a winger, Kesler is a C, the point I was making was that in TO Kessel was crucified for not carrying the team, while in Pittsburgh playing under Crosby/Malkin he has fit into his role perfectly and is adored. Has Kessel really done anything different in Pittsburgh? Probably not. The difference is the way he is being used, and the expectations from the fans which are now closer in line with his abilities. Put Duchene on the right team, he can be a great player, but we are just not that team right now. I would hate to trade a 1st round pick which could turn into a 1C or a 1D on a 6 million 2C who will be a UFA in 2 years. Now would I trade Duchene for say Nielsen straight up, ya of course but that will never happen. Colorado wants a 1st rounder or stud prospects.

I cant believe you want to trade AA Kidding aside, I think Colorado would want a 1st round pick which I would not want to give to them for a kid who can barely handle being a 1C as it is. My gut tells me he is similar to Kessel, he may not be "the guy", but on the right team where he anchors the second line, he could be an amazing 2C. We don't need an amazing 2C.

I've always liked his vision. I can think of a number of instances where he has put the puck right on a shooters stick with that shooter being in a prime position to score. I think he is a solid defender, and I don't really notice a ton of mistakes. IMO he is a very good 3rd pairing D-man.

I think sometimes people have too high of standards for what defines a #2 centerman. If we are being literal, it means you are a center who falls between the top 32-63 centers in the league. I think the reason why people have unrealistic standards is because they look at who the #2 centers are on elite teams, and sure if you are comparing a guy like Nielsen to Malkin, Kopitar, Kuznetsov etc. of course he doesn't appear at their level because he is not, but all those guys have the skill set of being a #1 center. Last year in total points Nielsen ranked 65th among centers with 41 points (1 point out of 63rd). What this tells me if we are just going from points is that Nielsen is a lower end #2 center, high end #3 center. Throw in the fact that he is a good two way player, and I would lean towards lower end #2 center. With all that being said, do I think he is a great fit on this team given our roster......no. Didnt the Trouba situation teach these guys anything? These RFA's have no leverage, they are just going to end up costing themselves money. When its an RFA without arbitration rights its always to the teams advantage (unless its a McDavid type).

The only reason I can think of is age. The guy is 74,and being a GM can't be an easy job. That's a lot of hours for guy that age who likely doesn't need the money. I could see him still being involved, but in more of a Scotty Bowman/Hawks sort of way. Again though, I admit this is speculation.

If memory serves me right, it was GM with the belief that LL would step down. You're right though, it was speculation. I think I read it on tsn.

I actually did read somewhere that if Detroit let Holland go, Toronto would scoop him up in a heartbeat. As much as fans here in Detroit have turned on him, he is still very respected around the NHL.

Ya personally i'd rather trade him for a pick then a mediocre prospect. The low value does bother me a bit, ideally if we trade him its for a something of value and not just a salary dump.

I think Holland would budge, but not to 3mil. I could see him offering somewhere in the 1.9 - 2.2 range. Ya, there has been a lot of talk in Pittsburgh lately about this. My gut tells me that Sheahan will be a Penguin soon, so if this happens and we sign AA, then I guess yes.
