If every NHL team had a roster of 11 players, the top guys would make much more as well. Also the NBA just signed a crazy TV contract.

Red Wings sign D Luke Witkowski to 2 year, 750k/yr contract. Will play as F.

Maybe Kronwall, E, and Sproul are all going on LTIR. I dont know. -
Red Wings sign D Trevor Daley to 3 year, 3.166m/yr contract, includes NTC/Modified NTC.

Meh, it's not a bad contract for Daley but I dont think we are in a place where we should be signing veteran UFA's. At least it's not a cap killer. -

I have a feeling Mrazek is going on waivers, or is going to be traded. -
So you think that the UFA's we have acquired over the years have taken discounts? Green, Nielsen, Weiss, Alfie etc?
-
To be fair though, that is in hindsight. I would argue that E made more sense at the time his contract was signed then what Abby did when his contract was signed. It is only now after the fact that the E contract looks so bad.

Agreed, and this is why I think he doesn't walk away. He walks away today and the narrative for Holland becomes "Some say one the greatest GM's of all time, Some say he was in the right place at the right time" He wins another championship with this current team in the next 5 years doing things his way and not listening to fans and media, and the narrative becomes "The greatest GM of all time". Ego definitely will play a factor. These past few years have definitely hurt his legacy.
-
So are you criticizing him for overpaying or underpaying players? Sounds like you are doing both.
-
He already did that though in 2008. Though I am sure he hears all the doubters, and would love nothing more then to silence them, so for that reason I could see him staying on.
-
Seriously? How did this happen?
-
You are messing me up using my avatar lol. I'm reading this post thinking "I never wrote this??".
-
This would piss me off as well, though I have a feeling Mrazek has zero trade value right now.
-
Nope, but I figured that was the case. Definitely helps the elite, doesn't help the low end guys though.
-
You have to wonder as well, how many awesome passes did he make that didn't lead to goals. Guy is just awesome.
-
Honestly I think he signs an extension unless the "Yzerman thing" pans out, which I really don't see happening.
-
Not going to lie, I would love to see Hartnell on this team if it was a short term contract to play on the 4th line. The guy is just an entertaining player to watch. I'm sure he wants to go to a contender though.
-
You're not wrong, but what it does is it hurts the teams chances of winning a cup. What it comes down to is what means more to McDavid. Winning cups or maxing out his contract. He could get both, but its going to make it harder to win. With that being said, he has every right, and I'm sure he is getting pressure from the union as his contract sets the bar for other top players. What sucks about this, is in a cap world where certain guys get paid this much, the teams won't lose as the cap is what it is, the guys that lose are those 4th liners who would have gotten 1.5mil, but now will be paid 800K etc. The enforcers, the 4th liners, the backups, the journeymen take the hit.

Ughhh. I would ONLY be ok with signing a guy like Daley if E gets moved, Kronwall is on IR, and it's a 1 year deal. Even then, we don't need regressing middle aged players, isnt this why we got rid of Qunicey?
-
Can't be worse then the Toews contract, for the production Toews brings at 10 per, McDavid at 13 is a steal.
-
Ya it's getting to Lefty/Franzen levels. I swear there is a comment in every top thread right now.
-
No No No No No! We buy him out and his caphit ends up being spread out over 6 years (at a lesser amount of course). We are not going to contend for a cup in the next 3 years, so why waste cap space for 4-6 years from now when we have a chance. The only reason to buyout a player is: A. If you dont, you will lose someone you need to keep (ie. a Larkin, AA, or Mantha) B. you need to add an extra piece to win now Neither of those apply to us. If the re-build gets accelerated, then we can always buy him out in a year or two which will shorten the length of the penalty. IMO, we should trade E and retain the majority of the caphit.
-
The problem is you typically get two extreme's. You either get people who talk about Babs like he is the best coach in the game end of story, or people who will say he was no good. Like anything, it usually lays somewhere in the middle. IMO, Babs is likely one of the top 3 coaches in hockey.
-
You mean "Go Draper Go!", Holland is only responsible if we don't sign him.
-
Come on Dickie, you're smarter then that, are you not a Lions fan? You have seen worse. Different situation, I'm pretty sure the majority (myself included) would be upset if we brought Methot in. Nill is looking to get his team back to contender status after the failure that was 2016/17. We need to acquire talent between the ages of 18-24, much harder to acquire then then guys 30+. I do agree though, I want Holland to make a move, specifically for a top 4 D-man under 24.
-
You don't know that until you see who they are replaced with. I still remember when the majority on this board were relieved to have a new voice in Blashill and thought it was time for Babs to go if we wanted to move forward. People were pissed at the thought of Holland losing Blashill to keep the overrated Babcock. With that being said, there are definitely better coaches out there (ie. Tippet), I'm not sold on a better GM being available at the moment. Let's wait a year and see what happens.
