Maybe Mantha is too big, too young and scoring too much. I mean, every other team in this league would clearly take the upcoming superstar Anderson over Mantha just makes sense. Also I think it's ridiculous that this organization is constantly throwing him under the bus why draft him in the first place if you don't like the guy? Such a weird situation

Free Press: Pavel Datsyuk to return to Russia following Playoffs
frankgrimes replied to jdwheelz's topic in General
I'm very impressed with Larkin's play but let's not act like he is already a proven star. There will be bums and bruises which are expected from young kids. Does he have the potential to be better than those 2 yes of course he does but it might take some time t for him to reach that potential. Tatar, Goose are solid top 6 players it's not their fault that people expected them to become stars or the next euro stars...when realistically everyone could see that they won't be this good. Management now needs to find a package to get a center and a defenseman this off-season will be a wild one because there is no way Holland can't kick the tires or sit on his hands now. As far as Stamkos is concerned the Wings can now offer him the number 1 center position without thinking twice, I'll doubt it will be enough to get him here but at least it's something. This is the end of an era the captain, Lidas and now Pasha tough pill to swallow and I think it's time to t rade the remaining vets and go rebuild. -
Ok let's say management + Blashill would I rather see him play? Damn sure but this would have been a once in a lifetime opportunity for Mantha to play with Pavel Datsyuk. He could have learned first hand what it means to be in the playoffs and how the best player on the team handles all the stuff that comes with it but now rather have other players who won't be here next year that provide nothing instead of a kid making mistakes. I just don't understand that mentality and it's not a good one in my mind.
-
So much for giving the young guns a chance, unbelievable. Mantha could have learned a lot from Pasha, now he won't have that chance. Reminds me on Smith being given the chance to learn from Lidas. But hey sending down useless players like Jurco, Pulkinnen or Andersson would have made too much sense so I guess that has to be expected from this management.

Caps in 6 only because they'll need to shake of some rust other than that as good as Philly played I don't see them having a chance here.

Free Press: Pavel Datsyuk to return to Russia following Playoffs

Such a touching and well written article thank you for posting this. Atta boy Pasha is not only gifted with magiclike talent the guy is also one tough SOB, fighting through this injury and then still coming back and still being the best player on the team, hats of Pasha, hats of. In my mind the guy has done more than enough for this franchise and I would love to see him play one more year but guess what? I would love it even more if he doesn't have to use his phone in order to get in touch with his wife and doughter. Honestly after reading all of this I'm very happy for him and it's even further proof that the guy should have been the captain. Hopefully the fans are giving him a minute long standing ovation whenever the last game in the post season will be. Thanks for everything Pasha, will be such a sad day seeing you lace em up one last time. -
That's the exact wrong approach , the regular season is a 82 games grind so it's something that should give every team enough time for evaluation and the myth of anything can happen is true for teams , who were considered SC contenders but underperformed during the season...I.e. sleeping giant's. Nobody in his right mind is going to consider this team a sleeping giant.

Inspired by the discussion of the Knuckes versus Numbers - the death of the NHL enforcer thread http://www.letsgowings.com/forums/topic/77433-knuckles-vs-numbers-the-death-of-the-enforcer/ I thought this would be a nice topic for discussion. I've never ever fallen asleep as many times as I did this season or even worse flatout not bother watching some of the other teams...a few years ago St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, the BOA (battle of alberta), ´Philly versus Pitts used to be must watch and can't miss TV now even that's gone. As a disclaimer this topic isn't to discuss to the pros and cons of fighting in the NHL the purpose is to discuss all changes! I'm going to start by repeating what I've been thinking since a few - especially during the last 2 years - now most of the changes have been for the worse, so let's start. Southern Expansion: While there are a bunch of successful stories Anaheim, LA, San Jose and Tampa there are also some teams which just aren't hockeymarket, period. I would have absolutely no problem with that if revenue sharing would provide some benefits for the Wings but it doesn't there is no luxury tax or anything else so what's the point of helping out the competiton in markets that clearly don't have enough fans...nor a hockeylike weather? If teams like Detroit have to pay 20 million a year to keep other teams alive there should be some benefit to that like it's been done in the MLB...if you are helping others out, you are allowed to spend more. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved. But the truth of the matter is, this league isn't strong enough to support 30 teams and yet they are thinking about expansion again? When the obvious answer would have been relocation. Would I feel bad and sorry for some of the new fans in these markets damn sure I would but if not enough people are showing interesting there is nothing left to do. I mean, this league didn't have a problem moving the Nordics, Jets or jets to ridiculous markets...yet they are fighting tooth and nails for non hockeymarkets by exploiting teams which are doing very very well. Tradedeadline and UFA market are dead Smart GMs are punished for having success and a great team whle bad Gms and badly managed organizations are being rewarded with the top picks each and every year. Stars - with a few exceptions - don't make it to UFA anymore and tradedeadlines are destroyed because Gms don't know what the cap will be for next year. Honestly I can't even remember the last really big boom trade it might even go back to Marian Hossa to the Pens in 2008. Players who decide to go to UFA are punished by ridiculous limitations like you can't sign for more than 7 years but if you re-sign with your old team they are allowed to offer you 8 years? How is this fair to other teams and players? There is no more accountability Agitators and rats used to have to answer for doing stupid s*** on the ice. Either by fighting the player whom they cheapshotted or fight someone from their team who is tougher and bigger. Nowadays people are allowed to facesmash, crosscheck, stickswing and flatout assault other players with no consequences other than maybe a fine here and there...that's not accountability that's ridiculous. Take the last Stars - Wings game for example if Jamie Benn whom I'm a huge fan of is tough enough to punch Z in the head 4 times, he is also tough enough to answer for that crap on the ice against someone like Reeves, McIlrath.. Also some players these days are putting themselves willingly into vulnerable positions so the other player can get a penalty. Which to me is absolutely ridiculous a player who decides to skate with his head down and turns himself to the boards instead of absorbing the hit should be responsible for his own actions too! Don't get me wrong I'm all for players safety and reducing the amount of injuries...but we are talking about grown adults and superbly trained atheletes here every NHL players knows how to absorb a hit. Rogers deal I think this is the most obvious one. HNIC is dead and the greatest hockeymind of this century can't even get his point accross because of timely constraints, not only did Rogers change the intro they've also replaced McLean with a guy who's name is longer than Apu's...surprisingly their so called experts and insiders are horrible. The only good thing is that TSN can be sitting there and enjoy the gongshow till Rogers decides to sell back for a reduced price. The deal to me again is proof that the NHL doesn't think longterm and they are only interested in a quick buck regardless what it means for the quality or the integrity of the game. I'm willing to bet some guys would make the famous Spongebob Squarepants figure MrCrabs look spendable.. Redesigns for the sake of what exactly? Maybe just maybe I'm unwilling to accept changes (yes I hate them) but honestly what's the point of having a so called website that's worse than the new TSN one, slow as hell and looks like the blogsite designed by a 12 year old? Wrong personal running the league I don't know nor care about any of the other leagues but I'm always fascinated to find out that a billion dollar league can be run by guys with no athletic skills, integrity nor any measurable pre involvement in the game. I mean, there are so many legendary players why not hire one of them and bring back the game to it's roots?

Baby one more time Britney Spears or End of the night - Dropkick Murphys

Win and you are in or lose and go home quickly Personally it's a win win game for me, either get a better draft pick or once again another first round exit against the caps
-
That's not what I'm saying. I just wanted to point out the guy has not gotten a fair chance so far. I would understand it if someone better replaced Mantha but Jurco and Andersson? Seriously that's a joke neither of these guys will help fixing that mess.
-
Each change has been for the worse , be it the southern expansion, reducing physicality , killing tradedeadlines and the UFA market and of course allowing the garbage known as Rogers to own the NHL rights.I don't care who's fault it is but the reality is we are losing things that made our game great. April fools was last week

my getting used to that stuff is falling asleep
-
I just hope whatever happens tomorrow doesn't impact some conclusions from this season. The team needs some changes holes have to be filled, period. A package to trade into the top 10 or something to get Trouba will be needed. Still can't believe how someone like Jurco, Andersson can get the nod over a young and coming foward. Wouldn't surprise me if Mantha gets finally pissed of and demands a trade, kid hasn't been given a fair chance here. Either the ridiculous comments from Develano or getting benched for guys that provide absolutely nothing and shouldn't even be on the roster.
-
It's been the worst, most un-entertaining season in years, so I guess job accomplished. Never fallen asleep during so many games,

Well another historic arena will soon be getting nuked in favor of another tax payer financed over the top lifeless place. Why didn't they just decide to refurbish the whole thing?

Well nobody controlls the balls but when it comes down who "deserves" Matthews teams like Calgary, Arizona (of course) and Columbus would come to mind. They didn't try to tank and a core of Duclair - Matthews - Domi + OEL would be very solid to build around it doesn't even matter if the Yotes stay or move...even a relocation team would be very happy with such young studs. Yeah I think it's a bit shocking that nobody has them as a potential candidate. Man if Buffalo gets another top 5 pick they could add one of the finnish monsters or get Chychrun to play with Bogosian...then they would be another top 4 guy away from being an annual playoff contender. Stamkos, RoR, Bogosian, Eichel, top 5 pick + Risto Ristoleinen that's a very very good core going forward with the potential of winning the cup. If it pans out like this the Sabres would have rebuilt their whole organization in freaking 3 years that's just insane. I don't know why but I really have a softspot for their team, their fans are one of the most loyal and best fans in the NHL they deserve a winning product and by all accounts Pegula seems like their version of our own Mr. I.

GDT 4/6 GDT : Philadelphia Flyers at Red Wings, 8:00 ET
frankgrimes replied to Hockeytown0001's topic in General
If the Wings make it, some people should maybe just maybe also thank the great goaltending of a guy named Jimmy Howard. Probably his best game all season he played like an absolute brick. Going to be tired as heck today but it was well worth it, because it was a win-win either miss and a 1 % chance for Matthews or win and have the final showdown on Saturday so yeah. -

Well I will be tired as heck tomorrow but I will for sure watch -
Neither have I nor will I ever but guess what I'm also not one of the best of the best of the best hockey players nor a professional athelete in the world. Professional athletes are far from being the most overpaid people in the history of human existence. That award has to go to a bunch of CEOs who are making millions and millions while never being held responsible and what's their solutions if things are going wrong? Of course firing the employees who didn't do anything wrong or buy out the competition and close them. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and I'm sure if he leaves, this will be a discussion for the ages but personally I wouldn't have a problem with it. The team isn't close to being a stanley cup contender and he Pasha is seeing something he hates before his eyes, i.e. declining skills and not being able to stay healthy.

I think there will be more teams than just TB and TO waiting in line for his services. Yzerman and Meehan haven't been able to reach an agreement so I think it's safe to say that Stamkos is going to sign somewhere else in the summer. As far as I know the guy grew up as a Leafs fan and is spending his summers back home but I really really hope, he is going to phone Phil Kessel and Dion Phaneuf before signing a contract with Toronto. The media scurinty there is unlike everything for every respectable insider (Dreger, Lebrun, Mckenzie) there will be a Feschuk, Simmons, Cox waiting for him to have a bit of a slump and then unload. Add to that the unbelievable large fanbase with a ton of questionable fans, who think players should just "have to deal with ridiculous expectations and no privacy" and the potential of signing there backfiring for him is huge. This is probably the biggest contract Stammer will ever sign in his career it will have implications for himself, his girlfriend and all his friends so wherever he is going to sign I really hope it's the right decision for him. Sure winning the cup with Toronto would make him a living legend in his hometown but man the Leafs aren't anywhere near close to that and they won't be for at least another 4 years and by then Stammer will be 31. Obviously the Leafs did the right thing by starting a rebuild but they still have a lot of work to do and will need to hit some homeruns outside of the top 5 because this has really been Edmonton's downfall, almost every non first round pick sucked. I also believe the Buffalo Sabres could make a big splash for him, it's a 90 minute drive for him to get home he would play without all the pressure and media scrutiny that comes with signing in Toronto and would have Jack Eichel as his center for years to come.

Good I hate this stupid the guys are making millions and millions of money argument so much because compared to other sports hockeyplayers are underpaid! Pasha can do whatever the hell wants in my mind he has given me more than enough joy over so many many years if he decides to leave and spend more time with his family in Russia while still being able to play top 6 more power to him. Would it suck for the Wings? For sure but guess what there are options to get around that caphit...also if the recapture crap is t hat bad why didn't the GMs tell their owners that his is a bad idea and not fight against it back in 2012? If he stays great another year of watching the magicman, if he decides to leave I'll be happy for him and would wish him nothing but the best.

Huge huge fan of Schenn and what he brings to the table but I would be fine with 3 mill per. The guy brings pugnacity and testosterone to a team and I also believe under the right circumstances he can be a tweener between a third pairing and at times (!) someone who helps out the second pairing type of guy. Pains me to admit it but Luke Schenn wouldn't fix our defensive problems a steady stay at home defender who can chip in some offense here and there would be needed and those guys aren't available. That's why Holland has to move some of the better pieces to land one either via trade or draft. Really there is no other way around to fix this mess yes, the offense will need help soon too but the fact of the matter is the Wings are in a better - i.e. more depth - position in terms of forwards then they are in terms of defense.
