I believe the offer-sheet would stand. I think for all intents and purposes a signed offer sheet is the same as a signed contract. The only difference is the original teams right to match the offer.

Of course not I'd be as giddy as anyone else, I'd still consider it an over payment though. I've said all along I don't think this is a mistake on Holmgren's part, I just think its silly to try and downplay the amount of money it cost him to do it. I also don't think its fair to criticize GM's who didn't offer sheet him as it's still a risky move considering the CBA is about to be altered significantly.

Nashville doesn't have the option to "outfox" anyone, they can match the offer or reject it making Weber a Flyer, they can't alter the contract in any way. Erik Karlsson comes to mind. 22 years old, already has a Norris and with far more offensive upside than Weber, signed recently for 6.5 mil a season. Besides Weber isn't getting paid Norris money, he's getting paid Hart Trophy kind of money. The only players making more are Crosby, Ovechkin and Malkin.

Name me another NHL defenceman with a cap hit above 8 million. When you sign someone to a 14 year deal its supposed to come with some sort of a discount. They may have overpaid for a great player, but it still an overpayment no matter how you slice it.

I'd be pretty surprised if the Wings signed someone to a cap hit over 8 mil. I agree he's one of the best, if not the best defenceman out there, but 8.38 is an awfully big cap hit to carry for 13 years, especially with a cap rollback being almost a certainty.

I agree that Weber is one of the top 3 at his position, but I don't necessarily think that justifies a max deal. You said it yourself, it was a poison pill to prevent Nashville from matching. If they offered him his market value Nashville would definitely match. You will never land a player via offer sheet without overpaying. I'm not saying Philly made a mistake, I'm just rejecting the notion that signing someone to an offer-sheet is somehow a more prudent strategy than overpaying via trade or signing. Its all overpaying, what difference does it make which way you do it?

You can't possibly pay a player more than Weber will be making for the next few years. On top of that if he gets him, it also costs him 4 first round draft picks. Weber is a great defenceman but he isn't the best player in the NHL

But overpaying in the form of an offer-sheet is what he should have done?

With cap space to clear, do Flyers become a Wings trade partner?
FlashyG replied to Yzerfan1999's topic in General
The guy is agressive...Not sure how much success he's achieved with all his dealing though. They Flyers haven't exactly been a pillar of success during his tenure as GM. When you're looking to trade and are currently above the salary cap the returns you get offered aren't going to be market value. Every GM in the league will know he has no choice but to accept their offer or use waivers, losing players for nothing at all. -
Most of those guys will be re-signed this season and when Free Agency rolls around that list will look alarmingly similar to this off-seasons. If you have holes in your roster, fill them now, or during the season because if we've learned anything from this off-season, its that the competition for the few FA's available is fierce and to land one you're going to have to spend a ton of money.

I think the difference is their age. The likelihood of Weber playing at 41 is far greater than Kovalchuk still playing at 44.

Why would Babcock leave? Holland has given him or attempted to give him every single thing he asked for this offseason. He wanted right handed shots, - he got 3 of them. He wanted depth for the bottom 6 - he has depth in abundance. he wanted to get bigger and faster. He got slightly bigger, but a ton faster The only other thing he said they need was a winger for Pav, and the Wings are still waiting on both Doan and Semin. Holland also attempted trades for Rick Nash (a favorite of Babcock's), and #1 defenceman in Yandle and Weber. Babcock isn't some overreactive fan, he likely recognizes that you can't make everyone come to Detroit, or force teams to trade with you. I bet he's overly pleased with the effort Holland has put in to try and give him what he wants.

Kovalchuk's deal paid him until he was 44 I believe with the last 7 years being at 1 million dollars a season. The NHL didn't believe he had any intention of playing those years out, and ruled they were added just to artificially lower his cap hit.

With cap space to clear, do Flyers become a Wings trade partner?
FlashyG replied to Yzerfan1999's topic in General
Interesting tidbit about the use of LTIR from the CBA. CBA Article 50.10 section D (iii) I may be interpreting this wrong but it seems the Flyers can't use the cap space created by putting Pronger on LTIR to sign a player who makes more money than him. They may be forced now to count his caphit against their cap making them more likely to move someone. -
Who are the phylers? The only shot the Wings always had of landing a #1 defenceman was by trading. Nashville has to spend 24 million just to get to the cap floor. They will match the offer and then thank Philly for helping them lock up Weber for life.

He made significant offers to both of the top FA's available this offseason, they chose to play at home over joining the Wings. He is after the next biggest FA available and is waiting to hear back, and had preliminary talks with the #4 FA, who appears to be waiting to see what happens with Doan. On top of all that he's had significant trade talks with Nashville for Weber, with Phoenix for Yandle, and even attempted to get Nash from Columbus. He can't make teams trade with him if they don't want too, and paying extra just for the sake of making a major change is more likely to land us in the lottery rather than the playoffs. I'm not sure what you're expecting, but this has been the most active Ken Holland has been in an offseason in 15 years.

If the contract is worth more than 42 million, the compensation will be 4, 1st round picks. The CBA has a clause that is there to prevent long term offer sheets. The maximum # of years you can divide the contract by (for compensation purposes) is 5, So even if its only 100 million, that would make it 100/5 = 20 million which is way higher than the 8.41 threshold for the 4, 1sts. As much as I wanted Weber, Holland was right not to offer sheet him. It makes sense for Holmgren to do it, because if his offer is matched he doesn't have to face Weber more than twice a season. If Holland offer sheeted him and Nashville matched, we essentially negotiated a life-time contract for a division rival. It made more sense to trade for him and then negotiate a deal, and it appears Holland was one of the major players in talks. There is a silver lining to all of this though, if Nashville doesn't match, a division rival's defence has been decimated even worse than ours, and Philly will be in a weird situation where they can no longer keep Pronger on LTI (you can't replace a player on Injury reserve with a player who makes more money). That will put them temporarily over the salary cap, allowing us to make an offer on one of their defenceman to shore up our top pairings.

signed Red Wings Sign Jordin Tootoo to 3-yr deal, $1.9M/yr

Tootoo draws more penalties than he takes, that's really all you can ask for from an energy player who agitates the opposition. -
Red Wings make "helluva" offer for Nash, no response
FlashyG replied to stevkrause's topic in General
I wouldn't expect him to improve his #'s much at all. If he was a sniper he'd benefit from a set-up guy like Datsyuk but he likes to carry the puck more than shoot it and I don't think he'd have the type of chemistry you'd want with Datsyuk. Nash played with some of the best players in the world during the Olympics and his numbers sucked, I don't buy the excuse that his lack of production is the fault of his linemates. He is what he is...a sub 80 pt player that collects way too big of a paycheck. -
You'd have Samuelsson and Nash to complain about then. Especially when we're paying just less than 8 million dollars for a guy to put up around the same amount of pts as Franzen.

I'm looking for specific players, not general things like I'd get a top 6 forward and a Lidstrom replacement. Who is the top 6 forward you'd target? if its a FA, what would you be willing to pay him? Who would you trade for and what would you have given up to get him? I agree that Holland isn't solely responsible for the successes and failures, but I disagree that Bowman deserves the credit for building the Wings that were playing in 2008. Bowman worth was as a coach, not a team builder. He also was only a consultant for the Wings from 2002 until he left for the same position in Chicago. I remember Babcock saying he talked to Scotty almost every day, but I've never heard of him lending a hand to Kenny or the management team. Holland has been part of the GM team since 1994 and has been the full time GM since 97-98. Of the 2008 Red Wings the only players on it that weren't drafted by or brought in by Holland were Osgood, Holmstrom, Lidstrom, Maltby, McCarty and Draper.

I'll take White and his 2.875 million dollar contract over Wiz at 5.5 every day of the week. Who would you have overpaid for? what would you have traded to get "what we need" who do you have in mind for what we've needed the past few years? Its one thing to say he should have done "something" but you aren't really proposing any options. As for where we are, we're in the off-season, you don't have a crystal ball and you aren't any more accurate predicting the Wings failure than the optimists are at predicting a championship.

Reminder: Personal attacks, trolling will not be tolerated
FlashyG replied to haroldsnepsts's topic in General
I agree 100% about the personal attacks Disagreement is fine, but when nearly all of your posts on a Red Wings forum are taking shots at the Wings you're straddling the line from being a dissenter to a contrarian troll. -
I really believe that its not just Holland holding out on Semin in favor of Doan. Babcock was very critical of the roster he was given this past season for not fitting his style of play. I'd be willing to wager its him who is adamant that they don't sign Semin and is leading the charge for Doan.
