Wings sign Nyquist to 2-year, $1.9m deal ($950k/yr cap hit)

Nice. Even if Gus ends as a 4th-Line grinder the salary is still reasonable. 640k Cap hit and two players to go. I'm looking forward to see how Kenny will handle it.

True, but I never read it in that clarity from any side involved so I thought I share it.

From the article : Translates to : That leaves no room for speculation, if Sheehy said this. Won't see him in Detroit next season.

Penguins hire Jacques Martin as assistant coach

It can, but you cannot let a team the Jaque Martin style when youre hampered by a at best average defense and loaded with guys like Crosby and Malkin. It's like trying to save fuel by buying Ferrari.

    Brunner Contract Talks

Pure speculation but maybe there are some deals going on in the background and most GMs and/or players are just waiting how they work out to decide on which team they sign after those deals are done ?

    22 Seasons of Domination

Wow look at Philly. 4th best team but no Cups and it doesn't look like they would win it over the next few years. That is bitter.

    Brunner Contract Talks

I'm pretty optimistic that we will resign him. He always said that he liked Detroit and that he wan'ts to stay here if possible. And if I was him I would try to win the Cup with this experinced and deep but also young and hungry team now instead of making one or two Mil. extra.

    Stephen Weiss on his way?

Can they put Sammy on waivers and transfer him to the Griffins afterwards ? Then his salary wouldn't count against the cap right ?

    Players of Interest

Is he serious ? If the Wings lack one thing it is a scoring winger. Even with Cleary and Brunner resigned.

Report: Red Wings out on Lecavalier - signs with Philly 5@4.5 per

I'm glad Holland didn't sign him at these terms. 5 years for an already declining center ? After maybe two productive years we all would (rightfully so) blame Holland if he starts to fail the LGW expectations. See Franzen. In addition if we want to keep our young players after they made it to NHL-Level then we better stay away from this kind of contracts.

    How much is too much?

The question for me is not how much is to much but how much for what length is to much. Better pay a decent player one or two Million more for a foreseeable period of time than stuck with this player and his cap hit for years. Some GMs are just insane if they sign players with big cap hits till their late 30s/ early 40s. See Luongo, Richards, Brzy and many others. The question how much is about how it fits in your system. If you're the Flyers and you have holes in you D and a shakey Backup as starter than I would see 4.5 Mil for a declining LeCavalier as too much. If you are the Red Wings on the other hand and you are looking for a decent second line center then this sounds like a good deal. (With the exeption of the length, see my point above) The average numbers from the threadstarter look reasonable but they don't answer the question if, for example, Alexander Ovechkins 9 Mil. are to much or Abbys 1.4 Mil are a good deal.

17yr old hockey player charged for on-ice assault.

Simply because we are not talking about NHL-Level here. This is a Minor league with young players who need more protection than the average NHL-Player who makes his money with the sport and actually know what might happen if he sprays. If this were common in this minor-leagues too I would agree but I don't think that this is the case. Nobody says that any action against a spraying player should be charged but in this league the reaction of the offender seemed way to hard. It even might be on NHL-Level. Therefore the other player could not anticipate what his spraying would lead to and beacuse of that the offender should be charged.

17yr old hockey player charged for on-ice assault.

It doesn't depend on what the ref did or didn't. I'm preparing for my final law-exams in Germany and so I will try a systematical approach. Looking into German law and decisions it would depend very much if this would be seen as a normal part of the game or normal suspendable behaviour (= no assault) or as way over the top ( =assault). Since laws and judges are different everywhere in the world I don't know how it would be decided in Canada but the solution above from the Bundesgerichtshof ( Germanys highest court) seems very reasonable. Question is : Is this way over the top or not ? If we would watch a NHL-play here this would be propably a 5 Minute Major, maybe a game-misconduct. But it could be seen as part of the game. (Might be not if a suspension is called.) This is not possible when you take a look at the junior-leagues where the rules against violence are much stricter and the players need more protection. So in this case : He should be charged for assault in my opinion.
