I mean I like Sproul but I just don't see what the big deal is. Your whole premise is he "may be a top 4" with time. But if there is no guarantee then is it really worth it to sit here and invest in him and not make this team better with Daley? We obviously have bigger fish to fry. We need a long term 1D, two well developed Centers, we need our scoring wingers to put out more consistently. We need to be better on special teams and we need consistent goaltending. I don't see how Daley coming and and somehow taking some minutes away from Sproul (a guy who might not even be a top 4 or might be) is a bad thing. Sproul is such a small part of our issues; of this team. Daley is here to be an actual top 4 may be a top 2. Maybe we get into playoffs with his help, with Mike Greens help, with Dekeyser actually playing what his contract is worth, with Mantha, Larkin, AA having one more year under their belt, with Nyquist and Tatar being the 30 goals/60 point scorers they're supposed to be, with Blashill having more experience and actually getting more out of his players. Most of the pieces of our puzzle are there. The problem is we haven't been able to execute and put it all together. Our players aren't very good because they don't play at their ceiling. But if they did, we COULD be a good team. That's probably what Holland is thinking and the reason why he's not giving up on playoffs, on making a run. Maybe he thinks this team has the pieces and needs to execute fully. I'm not sure what the right answer is, I'm trying to think this through Hollands eyes. -

So basically plugs... Like Lebda or Lilja, or Lashoff, or Marchenko or any of the other 3rd pairing defenseman out there. -

Same ppg. Yup and that's exactly why Tatar should make a minimum 1 million dollars MORE than Nyquist. Mathematics is sooooooo good. Thanks for proving my point, the point that you make absolutely no sense. For the record if you want to look at the full stats, Tatar has a PPG of 0.56 and Nyquist is 0.61. But you know. ONE MILLION more dollars to the inferior producer. But ok since your want to look at goals. Nyquist is .26 goals per game and Tatar is .28 goals per game. Congrats Tatar you are 0.02 goals per game better than Nyquist. And for that you get 1 million more per year. Courtesy of Rightwinger. -

Oh boy, I thought reading comprehension was an issue, but so is mathematics now. -

I never had a major issue with Jensen, I know the others gave you guys crap for it. Jensen doesn't and didn't have the defensive shortcomings that Sproul does. Sproul can be a liability. His offensive skills are good in that he would be a serviceable 5th or 6th defenseman. But if that's the case then that shouldn't be a reason to hang onto hope for him and simply not sign a better defenseman. I'd much rather have Daley take the minutes while Sproul plays on the third pair and *if* possible, improves his defensive game. But you don't just throw top 4 minutes at Sproul just because. Not unless we're actually tanking, only then would I get it. Clearly Holland wants to be a playoff contender and why he signed Daley. Btw my argument was about longevity not development. -

Do you know how to read? I can explain the following image to you. Less games played, more points scored. One is obviously more of a set up guy. But regardless of that, still has more points overall. But yeah, you want to give the underachiever more money and ***** about the one that outproduces him. Here's more - direct quote from Ansar. Gustav Nyquist, who makes $4.75 million per season, has 56 goals and 145 points in 240 games the past three seasons. Tatar has 75 goals and 147 points in 245 games over the same time frame. Yet you praise Tatar and want to give him more money. And whine about Nyquist 50 of the 82 GDTs during the year. Rock solid logic. But we all know the real reason why your overlook Tatar and give Nyquist crap. It's the Swedish Mafia thingamabob. Because of their similar production (Tatar actually slightly worse), they should be getting paid the exact same amount. Anything more is an overpayment. -

Except they do. You have a knack for talking out your ass and not giving sources so here. http://www.quanthockey.com/Distributions/CareerLengthGP.php Number of Games Played during an NHL Player Career Average games played for Forwards: 259.77 Average games played for Defensemen: 271.32 Number of Seasons during an NHL Player Career Average seasons played by Forwards: 5.66 Average seasons played by Defensemen: 5.96 The age difference is slight but it's there for the ENTIRE NHL history (since the 1920s). This includes the fact that defenseman actually had it worse back then. Between 2000-2010, 19% of the NHL defenseman were retiring after the age of 35 while 14% of the forwards were retiring after 35. -

Because they're Swedish. This is the same guy that wants to give Tatar a long term deal even though Tatar has been pathetic overall on ice the last two years were it not for playing with Z who fed him most of his 25 goals. -
When I think of players with elite vision in setting up players I usually think of Joe Thornton or Sidney Crosby. But this past season Z seriously put himself up there amongst both of them with some of the most ridiculous passes and seeming knack for being 2 steps ahead of the play before it happens. Someone made a dedicated video for this on youtube. Check it out. As a side note, Mantha's wrist shot is crazy good.

Ahh well well, Jacksoni, good to see you have some positive vibes for the old Beard. I remember last season you and I were duking it out as you were asking for The Beard's head and making talk about forcing him into retirement and whatnot.

Yes lets ignore the trend in defenseman having better longevity and make up superficial arguments about "genetics, injury history, PEDS" etc. Anything to play down the signing and make management look like s***. Superficial arguments will do at this point. -

Might be one of your best posts I've seen. Solid points here. 1. People don't know Daley, are looking at his age (forgetting defenseman age is not equivalent to offense players) and judging. 2. Daley is easily our second best defenseman after Green. 3. He can play on all ends of the ice, and can play big minutes, including PK, PP (has a hell of a shot). 4. Great puck moving defenseman 5. He's better than all of our young defenseman 6. Our "young" defenseman aren't that good, nor will they be. Sproul, XO are plugs (sorry guys I know some of ya'll are in denial but they aren't that good). Jensen is the only one with true potential without having major shortcomings on defense (which is the recipe for being an NHL defender). 7. The young defenseman that COULD be good are still 2 years (probably more) away (Saarijarvi, Cholowski, Hronek). Hicketts maybe 1-2 years. And the best point of all. 8. NHL is NOT a development league. If you're not already developed into an NHL ready player, then spend some more time in the minors. -
Right, to think Z was competing with Shanahan in goal scoring back in the 2005-2006 season. And then like 6 goals in 6 playoff games or something ridiculous like that in 2006

According to the amount of minutes and the type of minutes he plays, yes. Trevor Daley is a 1st/2nd pairing defenseman depending on what part of his career you look at. 1st pairing with Dallas, 2nd with Chicago, both 1st/2nd with Pittsburgh. Well no, then they have no idea what they're saying. Daley is definitely going to be our 1st pairing defenseman. MAYBE 2nd pairing to spread the pairs out and compliment each other. If Blashill is racist, Daley ends up on the 3rd pair. People should watch the video I linked to see what Daley does. He had a down year last year and has battled some injuries but when he's healthy, he can be very good. -

Want to know what's scary? All of Pittsburghs D-lines can act as first lines. That's why their TOI is spread dead even. With Letang in it's not as grey but with him out, I couldn't tell you who was the true "1st pair". On paper though, If I had to guess I'd say Daley/Maata was acting as their 2nd pair. -

I believe mostly with Olli Maata. According to ice time amongst the defensemen he spent (about) the most ice time on penalty kill, third most on the PP (second to Letang and Schultz) and about the same total ice time as the other defenseman besides Letang (who plays 25 minutes a game). The others play abput 20-21 minutes a game. -

I said this earlier but 33 years old is not old for a defenseman. Lidstrom only had 3 of his 7 Norris Trophies at that age. Brett Burns just won his Norris Trophy as age 31. Not saying Daley is at that level or anything but just making a point that defenseman longevity is incomparable to offensive players. Another example is Niklas Kronwall who scored 49 points at age 33 in 2014. That was his second highest point total in his career (highest was 51 points in 2009) Kronwall then went on to score 44 points the following year (good for 3rd highest in his career) at the age of 34. -

Trevor Daley post signing interview and highlights: -
As much as our team sucks, that line was easily one of the most fun to watch in the league last year.
-
It's the same thing. 1 year for Quincey or 3 years for Daley. Green leaves after this year; Daley takes his spot for year 2 and 3.
