    Interview with Petr Mrazek

People are obsessed over our "kids". Our kids aren't that good. Some are. Like Mantha, like Larkin. But most of them don't belong in the NHL and shouldn't be up here without some more AHL games. I mean I get it, Holland has isses of overipping people, but that doesn't mean you take the complete opposite approach and throw some underriped kids out there. Wtf do we want Cholowski on the squad too? He hasn't even finished puberty yet I don't think.

    2017 Selke

^ Exactly, Hossa was an incredible defensive forward, he was a really good penalty killer in his prime as well.

    2017 Selke

Right, plus Datsyuk is super flashy and the NHL loves flash. But I always felt Zetterberg was the better defensive forward at 1 on 1 face to face battles. Datsyuk was more of "I'll sneak up on you" type of guy which always blew peoples mind. Plus Zetterberg was primarily a Left Winger those years, and a Winger hasn't won that award since 2003 when Lehtinen won it. They seem to love giving it to centers for that "Faceoff" stat.

    2017 Selke

But anyways to answer your question, I don't think they use advanced stats to award the Selke trophy. They just use the faceoff% , takeaways, points scored and +/- stat I believe. And Z is doing well in all those except his faceoffs gone to his standard 51% - ish percent. If he can get it up to 53% I'd say he'd be competing for it. Zetterberg is on pace for having an all time best season in blocking shots (he's already at 21), all time best at Takeaways (he's got 29 his career best is 54), he leads the team as a +13, he's got one of the lowest PIMs in the league, and he's usually taking defensive zone faceoffs rather than offensive zone faceoffs which puts him at a slight disadvantage compared to other players, yet he still maintains good numbers. So I can see why Greg Wyshynski feels that way. I still don't think Zetterberg would be top 3 in Selke. But it does help that Kopitar, Toews are doing bad. Bergeron has been awful too actually. Kesler I can see winning. It seems like a weak year for Selke candidates.

    2017 Selke

How many times has Zetterberg been snubbed of the Selke trophy? He should have won it in 07 and 08. Sadly I doubt his good defensive year is going to matter, the league won't give it to him over Bergeron or any of the younger guys. Plus Z's faceoff numbers are trending downward. If he can get it up, I'd say he has a decent chance.

Agree with the contracts part, but we would pay him big time and some people care about $$$

Maybe Holland wants to keep Blashill so they do in fact get a high pick

Referees have way too much power for absolutely no reason at all. That's why Dennis Wideman took things into his own hands last year.

You can't force people do be a hardass. What I wonder is wtf the assistant captains of this team are doing? Anyone else feel like Abdelkader has been useless with that "A"? Draper always had Lidstrom's back. Shanahan always had Yzerman's back when it came to the Press and Referees.

Steve Ott brings more to this team than Riley Sheahan. Has more goals, is 60% on faceoffs while Sheahan is 51% And Ott can drop gloves and doesn't act like a pansy out on ice. And what's funny is Ott and Sheahan's Corsi rating is about the same Sheahan isn't favored by either advance metrics nor traditional thought process.

    Bruins fire Claude Julien

Why not multitask? Julien got fired, Wings should look into getting him. I think he'd make this team a lot better than Blashill. I think he might be a better option than Hitchcock as Julien hasn't shown any indication of wanting to retire and has never recorded a losing season in all his seasons as an NHL coach. Shocky2002 is a troll (not a very good one), don't take the bait.

I sincerely hope he doesn't all the way end of April. I just want the point to be proven that our players are not very good and we need to get rid of a whole lot of them. People keep blaming Blashill which is fine because he needs to be but this core is absolutely terrible outside of Mantha. Zetterberg, Larkin, Green and Mrazek who would all be 2nd/ 3rd line players on another team. And we don't waste $4 million a year on players who don't deserve it.

    Avalanche

The Avs haven't really been good since we KO'd them in 2002 run game 7. They had a couple more playoff early runs but that game 7 loss against us ended their short lived dynasty. Ours on the other hand kept going for another decade.

    Avalanche

And it's not like they don't have good offensive players either.. Weird. Our best player has more points than all of their best players. Their goalies aren't doing so hot either.

    Marchenko Waived

Lol indeed. Marchenko and him are very similar in size (Lilja slightly heavier) and both had a similar lack in offensive ability. Smith and Lebda both had good corsi numbers, liked to jump in on the play and scored about the same rate (nothing more than 15-20 points) but we're god awful defensively and made boneheaded plays. Isn't it crazy that Smith is now playing/considered a mid-pairing defenseman and Lebda who was a similar player was considered a 6th D-man and some folks even called for him to be waived? It just shows how our standards have decreased ever since we lost Lidstrom, Rafalski, prime Kronwall, Stuart, Chelios. What's scary is Kronwall was an actual mid pairing defenseman in the late 2000s and scored around 40-50 points a year. Now look at us.... Sheesh.. I guess that's the difference between a good team and a below average team. Or maybe that's just how the league is now. Which goes back to my original point I made a few posts ago. I don't think any of our defenseman are good "enough" except for Mike Green. Need some drastic changes on that back-end if we're going full rebuild mode. Maybe Ouellette and Sproul become good mid-pairing guys though so who knows. Too early to tell I guess.

    Marchenko Waived

Been hearing Babcock is a huge fan of Marchenko and feels as though he has enough "top guys" and wanted a middle pairing defensively responsible player. I think Marchenko did better under Babcock. He simply didn't fit the Blashill system. On the opposite I think Smith fits Blashill's system and doesn't fit Babcock's system. If that makes sense.
