That him attempting to train. He's terrible.

I think the reason I liked Bowman more than Babcock and will always think he's superior is because Bowman groomed his Grind line into one that he could put up against the opponents top lines allowing our top lines free to play against lower match ups. Grind line dominated the "Legion of Doom" line (Lindros, LeClair, Renberg)in 97 cup run. Would be awsome if we could pull something like that off in current day hockey. But our bottom 6 grinders consist of the likes of Andersson >.>

Yup, went to grind line and they ended up putting Yzerman and Fedorov together for a good while. Stevie was aging pretty bad by then. Plus we signed guys like Hull and Robataille, no reason McCarty should have stayed on top lines. Same, but they did wreck for a good few games. McCarty was your typical grade A fighter, grinder without being all that big. His upper body strength was just ridiculous..... Plus it always helped having a right handed shooter.. something we haven't seen much of in a while unfortunately. 97, 98 and even 2002 lines had a good balance of right and left shooters, wish we could get s'more.

Winter classic 2014 jerseys were great

Agree, drugs and alcohol got the best of him. Oh well lucky guy got his 4th stanley cup playing minimum games. Lol.

After 98 season i believe McCarty replaced Kocur on the "Grind Line" playing with Maltby and Draper. The epic line was reunited in 2008 game against the Blues as the starting line on ice when Mike Babcock sent out Maltby - Draper - McCarty together.

I'll give slowest award to Z

I'm not so sure about this. Abby's best season (this past season), was what McCarty averaged during this late 90s. Abby usually totalted around 25 points a season while McCarty hit 26 his rookie season and average in the 40 point range for a few years. McCarty was a much better fighter and grinder and his offensive numbers in his prime were better than Abbys. I'll give backchecking and speed to Abby tho.

Abdelkader would get rekt She would wreck McGrattan.
-
ahah yea. McCarty in his book wrote about how most people don't even remember that he had the game winner to win it all but rather remember him as the guy that jumped Claude Lemieux His game winner was frickin epic
-
The top 3 lines were very interchangable from what i remember. Meaning they could all have been considered the "top line". Yzerman was signicially slower in the late 90s. But the game itself wasnt that fast to begin with so he thrived. From what i remember atleast Aye, Z and Pav would get chewed up if they didnt have a net front presence or some grit on their line. I just dont remember what McCarty brought to yzermans line. The obvious answer is grit but i feel like there was more to it

Good stuff man, it was pretty epic. Hope to see more posts from ya

Scotty Bowman was the king of line changes combo changes *

Statistical analysts are hired to do this work. It's not like the coach is expected to be the one that does the math lol. This has no effect on on-ice training like you say. All it does is give them information on how to better utilize their players in specific situations.

BTW I thought the Red Wings as an org started using advance stats last year? Or was it just talk about using it?
-
Our very own Helene St. James had 'news' on Cleary. Nothing too useful quite yet but figured this might be a good place to discuss his imminent contract (as a player or front office?) The Wings might end up re-signing Cleary for one last year, but even if that happens, general manager Ken Holland has told Cleary that he won't make the NHL squad. If Cleary gets the same $1.5-million contract he had last season, the Wings would get $925,000 in salary cap relief by sending Cleary to the minors. http://www.freep.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2015/07/15/detroit-red-wings-roster/30187825/

It's actually not as simple as you're trying to make this argument out to be. It's not just one or the other. The advance stats go hand in hand with scouting. Scouts do their thing, GM/coaches work with advance stats to optimize their team play. This is the era hockey is moving into. Whether, you me or dupree like it or hate it.
-
yeah screw math; whoever said 2+2 = 4 is full of it because sometimes it can equal 5
-
Agreed. Good contract imo. Whats cap lookin like?

I was trying to be humorous!

What would you like for me to say? I love you?! My previous comment was an "if/then". Those arent necessarily belief starements. Take it for what it is. Grain of salt maybe idk Tank it
-
Hey! I only said garbage defensively because I believe you called our argument to be "garbage" or something along those lines. I was merely playing into your language usage. I generally don't like using such words to describe a pro player. Well maybe if I'm mad during the game.
-
Sure does. "Could be" =/= "he is/ will be"
-
When the opposing side makes exaggerating comments' it's quite easy to point out actually. So you're right histrionics are fun. You're right, there are plenty that aren't good defensively but more often than not they tend to be better at puck battles than Pulks was in some of the games he played. St. Louis, Lupul, Semin, Gaborik come to mind. He was weak on the puck, needs to work on that. You mention the liablity issue that's the same thing I've said so we can agree on that. He could be a liablity on top 6 and needs to work on that aka needs to be stronger on puck and be able to win battles. He had a hard time doing that on the bottom 6. It will be interesting to see how it plays out this upcoming season. Next bold point- I disagree, with a slapshot like his and ability to score against the AHL goalies, he's at a much higher advantage than a lot of other AHL players to shine at that level. I don't think any AHL player can light up the AHL with being fed one timers, I think Pulk had a huge advantage in his shot. It's the type that AHL goalies and a lot in the NHL have a hard time reacting to. The only difference is in the NHL, you come some elite defense in front of you blocking shots or knocking you down. See how much easier it is when you can keep a level head when you disagree and debate?
