Babcock granted permission to talk to other teams

What about the fact that the organization itself actually WANTS Babcock? I think people have forgotten the whole scope of this situation and focusing too much on the Babs side of the drama. We have no idea what the players/leadership core want. Blashill or Babcock or someone else. We do know the Holland made official statements that they want to keep Babcock. Do we know if they want him for 1 year? 4? 10? No. We know Babcock wants to see what the options are. Do we actually know if money is the main reason? No. Do we know if he's the one who wants to leave? Does his wife? No. Can only work with the actual information we have. We don't know who wants the short term contract. Babs or the organization or if it was mutual. And that's assuming if that rumor is even true.

The only drama is caused by the media and all of us overthinking. Babs is window shopping and Holland gave him permission to do so. I think all this was expected eh? Thank you. Legace was better than Cujo too.

Blues + San Jose jumping on board is STILL a bad lineup for Babs. His job offers are terrible. He's better off staying here. I said it before and I'll say it again. His best opportunity would have been if the Penguins had offered him. He could honestly turn that team back into a contender. They have a lethal offense with high potential and experienced leadership. To be honest Fleury has gotten better over the years as well (a bit). Too bad they haven't offered him a job yet. Blues suck in the playoffs. Hitchcock is a great coach. Would babs really make that much of a difference than Hitchcock? Maybe. But enough to win a cup? I personally don't think so.

Looks like the "May 20th" decision deadline to the media worked after all. Babs knows how to play the media well alright.

I'm loving the Babcock hype. Give me more. At this point what the hell else do you expect from the most coveted/successful coach on the market. No media coverage? Die hard hockey fans not giving a crap? Riiiight cuz that's how the world works. Decision by may 20th apparently. I predict he stays.

Yeah if it is true, IMO then Edmonton played it smart. Less attention/drama with the media with having McLellan rather than Babs and McLellan has the Stanley cup experience and worked with Babs quiet a while. Cheaper too.

Who knows, but if it is true, sort of a slap to babs face. Not even considered? Damn. We'll see if its true I guess.

So as of now Babs two best options are Buffalo and Toronto? That is sad.

Yeah I remember either FSN-D or NBC covering those facts earlier this year. Didn't know the Chris Kunitz one tho.

He might be a defensive minded coach but It's moreso the Red Wings style as a whole. We're had defensive minded players since the 90's long before Babs came around. Yzerman, Draper, Federov to name a few. It's just a tradition passed down by the players. Z and D learned from their predecessors and they will pass it down to the young guys as well. Lead by example.

Pretty sure the taxes in the U.S are higher. If he's making 5 mill it could be up to 40% in the U.S and in Canada I think it would be around 30%. Not too sure though, just an estimate. If anyone has the exact numbers please share.

    TSN Play of the Year

Remember the year it was Datsyuk vs. Datsyuk. Fricking epic.

Contradicting yourself there? Regardless. We aren't that defensive minded as compared to other teams. Just an example; our PK in the season was top 20 at best. We actually don't have any pure goal scorers on the squad. Just a lot of playmakers and mid-tier goal scorers. When I say goal scorers I mean guys that can score 35+ goals on an 82 game season. Last time we had anyone like that was Franzen, Hossa and Z in his prime. Before that were guys like Shanny and Hull. By current standards I mean guys like Rick Nash or Stamkos. I think Tatar has potential to become a 35+ goal scorer though. He's in his second full season and had 29 goals. Quiet impressive. Anyways back to topic at hand.

Agree with both of ya. My feeling though is that he has a higher chance of losing in Toronto and becoming public enemy number 1. While it may be true that he could win and become a "god" in that city. Those fans do not take a liking to losing either. Babs is a calculated man, he's always disliked the media pressure. I'll be surprised if he went there knowing that his legacy could be tarnished by some crazy canadian fans/media if he doesn't end up being successful there. But who knows. If I were in his position, I'd play it safe, stay/go somewhere where there is an actual chance of winning and keep the "best coach in the league" title going for him. Kind of like Floyd Mayweather If the Pittsburg job opens up honestly I'd pick it. They have the Stanley Cup experience and leadership and they've got the skills. Otherwise I don't see the practicality of leaving this team. Everywhere else just sucks >.> Idk just my two cents on what I would do. Then again, I don't have 5 million being thrown at me.

Except we dont actually have a goal scorer on this team. Maybe Pulkkinen but he sucks at other aspects of the game.

I do find it amusing that teams like Toronto, or Buffalo honestly believe that paying Babs that much money is going to be a game changer. It's not a coaching change its a damn structural change these organizations need. Babs knows this just as well as we do. Let's not kid ourselves. If he leaves Detroit for Toronto or some other inferior team, I'm almost positive it's because he just wanted to get out of Detroit, not because he could go far with other teams. No smart coach in their right mind would see any benefit of coaching these atrocious organizations. His best option isn't even offering him a position. (Pittsburg with the two best players on their roster Crosby/Malkin). Sorry Mr. Babcock, but you've got some s***** job offers so far. Almost as bad as the free agent selection pool in the entire NHL. There I said it.

4 mill or less imo. But if Illitch wants to match the 5 mil that Toronto "supposedly" offered, then I personally don't mind. The guy is a great coach.

He's also happened to take the Wings to the playoffs with his superstars injured and having most man games lost last season. He's also happened to take the Wings with a terrible defensive unit to game 7 against Blackhawks of 2013, probably one of the most talented teams that year. He also outcoached the hell out of Bruce Boudraeu in game 7 in 2013 round 1. Babcock isn't overrated. He's not underrated. He's rated perfectly fine. He's done it all. He's won championships with championship teams and he's gone far with subpar roster teams. (Anaheim 2003). The past few years he's been trying to make a sub par roster into champions and hasn't been able to do so. Big whoop. I'd like to see other coaches try. I'll bet my life savings that many of you will regret it come march 2016 if we don't even make playoffs. Remember the Scotty Bowman to Dave Lewis transition? Almost the same roster with a different coach. First round elimination under Lewis. Oh btw, Scotty also won with stacked rosters.

Nothing wrong with looking at options in life. Sometimes people need assurance before they decide to stick with something or even to move on. If you were offered a job at say Google and you currently work for Apple, there's no one who wouldn't at the very least look at what benefits Google has to offer even if they're content at working where they're at. Babcock is doing what any normal person in his position would do. He's weighing his options. Nothing classy or classless about it. Also I'm not sure why people are assuming Blashill is somehow the better option when not even the organization itself does. Sure he's worked with the AHL roster but so has Babcock. For 10 years now actually. That's longer than Blashill. If babs stays, the Wings organization gets what it wants. If not they will interview Blashill. Nothing more or less to it.

Clarify this for me because I'm seeing mixed things about this on the internet: Do we get a 3rd round pick if a team ONLY "talks" to him early. Or Do we get a 3rd round pick if a team "talks" AND signs him once his contract is over?

Losing babs for say someone other than Blashill could actually bring a whole different change. Coaching style is an important aspect in this league. If we end up with the likes of Tortorella (just an example), that could dramatically change the locker room and on-ice work ethic and discipline. Our best bet is Blashill because he's been groomed to work in the same system as Babs. I still think Babs is the best option. Except of course the options are his to take not the Wings. The point is, there will definitely be a change in atmosphere with a new coach. Good or bad, who knows. But a coaching change does have an big impact. Especially in this league.

Those could just be statements to hush up people up. He might just have true intentions to leave but saying what he can to not make a big deal out of the situation.
