Yeaaaa Smith messed up way too much tonight. He was the worst player on ice. Thank the lord for Jimmy Howard's performance and Pasha's sick goal.
-
Howard is the MVP this playoffs. I'm proud of him. And let me point out that I was critical of him for not having great playoff performances his first few seasons. He's started to become a good veteran goaltender. Good for you Jimmy.

Wtf is a dangle shot? You cant just make up shots. It's backhand, slapshot and wrist shot. The only extra one is SNAP shot but that's just another form of a wrist shot. Have you even played hockey...? Since dangle shot doesn't exist... Let's use you're own silly logic and numbers. Slapper = Dats 5, Z 8 Backhander = Dats 9, Z 9 Wrister = Dats 9, Z 7 Total = Dats 23, Zet 24. So Z wins by your logic. Besides, I think the consensus here is that Zetterberg has a better backhander and Slap shot. Datsyuk has the better wrist shot. So the 9's on backhand is wrong. Lol here's more proof to keep proving you wrong. If you search "Shot (ice hockey)" on Wikipedia, look what it says under Backhanded shot: "The backhand shot is a wrist shot released from the back of the blade, and on the player's backhand. This shot is not as powerful or accurate as any of the other shots, but often comes unexpectedly. Backhand shots are primarily taken close to the goal, and are most commonly used on breakaways. NHL players known for their backhand-shot include: Sidney Crosby, Marian Hossa, Milan Hejduk, Patrick Marleau, Mike Richards, Paul Stastny, Henrik Zetterberg, Derek Roy, Claude Giroux, and Daniel Briere." How much more proof do you need? The whole world is crying out and saying Zetterberg has a better backhanded shot than Datsyuk. Troll.
-
First you say that. Then you say that. ---- Lol make up you're mind. Your just making a joke out of your argument.
-
LMAO you just proved how naïve and ridiculous your argument is. You cant be older than 12 years old. You think someones shot is better because they have more goals? OMG lmaoooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!! Hey Zdeno Chara had only 7 goals this year, are you telling me Datsyuk has a better slap shot than him because he had more than double his goals? Seriously answer that question for me so I can have another laugh. You're wrong kid. Get over it. You're just making a fool of yourself. BTW im still waiting on those videos. I gave you Zetterberg videos and I gave you Murphy's line talking about zetterbergs backhand shot. I gave you PROOF from an ex hockey player (Murphy). You haven't given any proof yet. And just to own your logic a little further. Since you say Datsyuk led the team in goals this season makes him the best shooter; here's a fact for you, Henrik Zetterberg is ranked 3rd in goals in playoffs behind Jaromire Jagr and Patrick Marleau. So according to you're logic, since Zetterberg leads the league in goals among active players he's the third best shooter in the LEAGUE. Datsyuk is ranked 12 in goals in the league. So that means Datsyuk is the 12th best shooter. So Z is 3rd best shooter and Pav is 12th best shooter. This is your logic. Lol.

In Tortorella's defense, he did recognize him as a great player and it wasn't like he downright insulted him. He clearly wants to put him on the PP, just that it's not working out. I think you gotta look passed his crappy attitude and look at it objectively.
-
Why does it matter now? Zetterberg has 7 years on his contract. That's atleast 5-6 years of potential draft picks. Maybe we can get a player that can be the next Zetterberg. Maybe Kronner will stick around some more and get captaincy for 2-3 years after Z's gone. Kronwall ages well, I don't see why he wouldn't play till he's 42. Maybe after Kronwall it's Dekeyser. Maybe its not. Who knows. But clearly not Smith with his DUI's stupid behavior in public at times that tends to get him in trouble. I've been a wings fan for nearly 20+ years and never has the organization even considered giving captaincy to someone with a track record like Smith. Smiths got a lot of potential but his public behavior is very immature. These are my personal opinions obviously but let's be honest how often do you see captains that have messed up this much on and off the ice? Heck id even give the captaincy to Darren Helm over Smith. He's been through hell and back with his injuries, he plays with class, the organization absolutely loves him. I mean Holland probably would never give up Helm unless Helm really wanted to leave. Anyways , I understand we are diverging off topic but in conclusion although Smith is a messup, he's can also be a great player with a lot of potential. I would be upset if he was traded.

Brendan Smith captain? Lmao. No. Look at our past captains people. Yzerman, Lidstrom, Zetterberg. Especially look at Zetterberg since most of us know him more closely since he's younger. All three by the way were world class players their ROOKIE SEASON! Zetterberg rookie season: In 79 games he had 22 goals and 22 assists and ONLY 8 PENALTY MINUTES Lidstrom rookie season : In 80 games, he had 60 points with 22 penalty minutes a +36 rating Yzerman rookie season: 80 games, 87 points, 33 penalty minutes. Brendan Smith 2013 rookie season: 34 games, 8 points, 36 PENALTY MINUTES +1 rating Now I understand that Smith is more of a scrapper and had 2 fights in the season so you can take 10 minutes out of those 36 minutes. But those 26 minutes in 34 games compared to the previous captains is a joke. No way in hell would Red wings franchise current principle give it to Smith. If we were truly to predict someone to get it next as of now; it would probably be Dekeyser. Kid does better on ice than most of the defensemen on our roster and he leads by example as a 22 year old or whatever he is. Plus babs and Holland love the kid as it is.. Smith on the other hand, the only kind of leading by example from him that I see is "How to draw a penalty in first 5 minutes of the game" Don't get wrong, I understand Smith is still learning, but to predict him to be captain for a world class organization like Detroit is a joke. We aren't Anaheim Ducks or Florida Panthers people. We are the Detroit Red Wings.

Agreed I;m expecting a minimum 3 year contract max 5ish. Thing is, Pasha's 35 but he plays like hes 28/29. He knows his body better than we do. But practically speaking he could keep the contract a minimum and probably finish it up in KHL in his 40s like federov did.

Actually because I completely disagree with you, I'd like you to find some on youtube that were better in AIM than the Zetterberg ones I posted and show us. Prove me wrong. You wont be able to. In fact i just searched "Zetterberg backhand shot" on youtube and found 5 videos, search "Datsyuk backhand shot" and found only 2. Interesting... The league as well as color analysts from FSN and NBC have repeatedly said that Zetterberg has one of the best, if not THE BEST backhanded shots in the league. Partly because of his stick which has a very small curve designed for backhanded shots. The fact that you actually think Datsyuk has the best shot on the team shows how big of a troll you are. Datsyuk ISN'T KNOWN for his shooting. He's known for his stick handling and finesse. He himself has admitted over and over that he doesn't like shooting the puck because he doesn't think its the best part of the game. So now we have you're opinion vs. NHL, datsyuk himself, youtube videos, and the rest of these people on these forums and other forums. Get off that Datsyuk bandwagon my friend. It's okay to have favorite players, but taking away credit where it's deserved is just silly. So now you're changing your opinion? At first you say that Datsyuk has the best shots and accuracy and now your giving the "slapper to Z" Go watch the videos I posted again. Listen to what Larry Murphy said "Nobody with a better backhand than Henrik Zetterberg" I think Murphy has more of a legitimate argument than a hockey fan. End of discussion.
-
Honestly think Zetterberg and Datsyuk should be nominated.
-
Nobody refuting any of you. While it is true that Zetterberg is the guy babs goes to when it comes to shutting down the other teams star players, it's also true of what I said in my initial post, which was "Datsyuk steals his thunder with Selke" Some else said that they give award based on stats. Unfortunately this is the reason Z may never win the award. Perhaps when Datsyuk retires or if Toews/Bergeron gets injured he will. Top 3 in my books are elite. Top 10 are great. Z is elite in playoffs; decent in season. Then again, that's cuz of his own personal game. He focuses more on backchecking during playoffs. Nothing wrong with that.
-
Although I agree with folks who are giving the "smith is still a rookie" excuse, it's funny that Babcock still goes with Smith over White even after Smith makes a billion mistakes during playoffs. Gotta love babs.
-
No Pavs slap shot is atrocious. Known fact. You gotta stop bandwagoning your fav player for everytime my man. Pav is my fav player but I give credit where its deserved. Z has one of the best accurate back handed shots in the league, it's been said multiple times. Here's a few examples: Listen to what Larry Murphy says in the second video "No player with a better backhand than Henrik Zetterberg"
-
REALISTICALLY speaking.. Datsyuk is the clear winner since the category is "best defensive forward". I mean if you watch some of the clips he's way better than Toews and Bergeron. But, knowing the NHL, and all the other extraneous crap they consider, they might give it to Toews as his +/- stat is better and also this would be his first time to win it and Pasha already has 3. I don't think Bergeron would get this due to lesser stats compared to Toews and Pav.
-
No he's not an accurate shooter. He has the best wrist shot on the team but he has terrible slap shot accuracy. It's a known fact and he's admitted it himself. Said, he didn't shoot much when he was younger cuz he didn't like breaking his sticks and having to buy a new one. It's on his personal twitter if you need proof. There's been times where Mickey Redmonds joked around and said "Pav should probably stay away from the slap shot" after he missed one or two wide, I believe it was the phoenix game end of season. Hardest slap shot : Franzen Most accurate slap shot: Zetterberg? (maybe.. not so much anymore) Best wrist shot: Datsyuk (probably top 10 in the league) Best backhanded shot: Zetterberg (probably one of the best in the league)
-
Eh... Datsyuk steals his thunder with Selke. Z is decent as a defensive forward. I'd say top 10 in that regard, maybe even top 5.
-
Not really. A failed assumption on you're part. As I mentioned before, Goalies attract attention when they get slashed moreso than a regular player on ice would. It's kind of their job sometimes to draw penalties. Theyre like babies that need to be protected. Simple hockey when defensemen shove opposing teams players out of the way from crease as soon as whistle is blown. . Nice try. Wasn't a dive in textbook hockey. Believe me. I've seen worse in this league. Even if it was a "flop" as you call it, it was nothing compared to half the stuff other players try to pull. In any case, the simple fact that it wasn't that bad, doesn't really warrant the fact that Z needs to "stop flopping around" I see Crosby doing worse things and that is what really warrants people to question someones ethic. Not petty little things that "looked like a dive" or "maybe was a dive" Im guessing by Cindy you mean Crosby. If that's the case, you should know that that's why Cindy Crosby is one of the more controversial players. Most people know about Crosby's diving antics. In fact there was controversy last week about how Crosby has actually never been called for a dive and speculation that he's been favored too much by refs. There's so much controversy that there's blogs dedicated to Crosby's diving. Sounds like a real world class player to me lol. Enjoy: Enjoy also:

Nope. That's a very childish logic. First, this series wasn't "brought back from the dead" by one player as you put it. We won in Anaheim game 2 so im not sure how you pretend as though red wings are "dead". This was a close series, not sure which series you were following. Also, If that was the case, that Datsyuk "brought them back from the dead", then Franzen wouldn't be sitting at 3 goals, Zet wouldn't be sitting at 3 goals, Brunner wouldn't be sitting at 2 goals and 3 assists as a rookie. This was a team effort by the leaders and rookies and Jimmy kept them in as well. Secondly, the top shelf roof shot wasn't an elimination game so that extreme example goes out the window. Third of all the ones that were in fact elimination games were games 6 and 7 in which Jimmy showed up strong and Captain led the way. By you're same logic, if Zet doesn't slap the OT winner in game 6 then the wings ARE eliminated if Anaheim scores. If Howard doesn't make a save on Selanne's point blank shot in game 6 then the wings could have been potentially eliminated as well. Also, 2 way play was shown by Z as well, especially in game 7 with the nice takeaway during the third period. So although Datsyuk was a better 2 way player, he wasn't the ONLY two way player, hence that doesn't really help towards his MVP status as there were contributions from others. In addition, to the comment "No back-stopping magnoficence from Howard": ill throw the converse at you: If Howard didn't save their butts with his saves, then Pav would be packing it up after game 4 and headed home to Russia rather than score the goal in game 6 on his backhand. Actually, this thread is about round 1 and so it DOES matter "when" someone is the MVP. As for round 1, it goes to Howard. And believe me, im not a huge Howard fan, but im realistic about facts. I'm not going to jump on my favorite players bandwagon every time. Pasha is one of my favorite players of all time but if it weren't for Jimmy, or Z's game winner, wings would have packed up and stayed home Sunday night.

Honestly, to accuse a world class player like Zetterberg of diving is probably one of the more naïve and unbelievable post I've seen here. If you knew any physics you would know that wasn't a dive. Please go watch the replay again and do not accuse one of the most classy players of something that ridiculous. I agree Howard did over exaggerate, but he did his job. At the end of game 6 perry got away with some nasty slashes. What Howard did in game 7 was payback. Good for him. Reminds me of what Ozzy did in his time as a red wing. Goalies always attract the refs attentions and it worked out in our favor. Be happy with it and move on.
-
This wasn't a championship series so no one takes lessons from anyone. And defense for the red wings this round was terrible so by the logic wings aren't eligible to win any championship.
-
Datstyuk is the best player on the team but that doesn't make him MVP of this series. That's not how it works. You're best player doesn't always have to be your most valuable player. You're most valuable player is the one that helped to get where you are. An OT game winner to avoid elimination (Zetterberg) and preventing other team from scoring in your net (howard) is more valuable than shutting down one star player (datsyuk on getzlaf). Franzen had 3 goals, one more than datsyuk, that doesn't make him MVP. What you do when you face elimination is what makes you an MVP. Pasha played an amazing series, as the league themselves including NHL.com have put it Jimmy gets the MVP for the wings first round and Z proved himself to be a good captain and was clutch.
-
Babcock >>> Quenville and the whole league knows it. It's a fact not an opinion. However, Hawks talent >>> Red wings talent. In the end, it will come down to who chokes and who doesn't. We need another Perry type fluff from Hawks star players.
-
How is Datsyuk the MVP? He played great but Zet or Howard would be clearly the MVPs.... Game 6 and 7 were elimination games and they both pulled through for that, that's how you earn MVP status by showing up on big games. MVP: Howard Clutch: Zetterberg Best defenseman: No one, the defense was terrible and I'm not going to award it to the "least worst" one either Best Rookie: Nyquist Most consistent player: Datsyuk Most unsung hero: Abdelkader

WCSF - (1) Chicago Blackhawks vs. (7) Detroit Red Wings
kickazz replied to drumnj's topic in General
If Zetterberg and Datsyuk can match up to Kane and Toews respectively, and if Howard stays as strong as he has, the series is Detroits.
