Recent Weiss rumors seem to be bogus
DetroitRedWings1993 replied to DetroitRedWings1993's topic in General
Yeah, I just saw. Eklund broke the story, if you can believe that. He actually got something right, for once. I didn't want to believe it because it is Eklund, but that's the end of that rumor. Great. More reason for Holland to sit on his butt at the deadline. -
Saw via The Hockey Chat on Twitter that the Wings were at first very interested in Stephen Weiss, then had a formal offer on the table. Heard a prospect and a draft pick, tentatively. Now, back to reality, and why I think this is total BS. By the time most of you read this post, the tweet in question will be about three days old. Not only that, but the Wings showed virtually no interest in Weiss whatsoever before three days ago. Also, this is a Twitter-generated rumor (as I can't find any major sports news outlets who have picked up on it), which usually means it's horse-dookie. I've had enough of Twitter-generated nonsense over last summer up until now to see this is fake. He's 29, which is decent age, and has a ton of skill and plays a good 2-way game. In short, the price is going to be high. Granted, his struggles will drive the price down a little. But, it's all a moot point considering I highly doubt the Wings are interested, much less have an offer on the table. Would he help? Sure. Will the Wings get him? I'm really sorry to pull an Ansar Khan on you guys and be extremely negative about this, but I doubt it. Honestly, they haven't shown me they have the ability to make anything but no-name moves lately. I don't have much confidence anything changes. Probably another trade deadline that should be slept through. It's going to be a long, painful ride back to the bottom, if I judge it correctly. Hopefully, the Dead Wings don't come back for very long.

He's a really good player. He could be worth that much. That's what Fil is probably going to ask for, anyways. I'd much rather have Clarkson than a kitten like Filpulla. One produces, one doesn't. Simple as that. Preferrably, tell Filpulla he either takes less money for his failure to produce consistently, or get out. I don't really care about him anymore. Waste of time, if you ask me. Decent in his own zone, but he doesn't shoot and tries to dance in the offensive zone too much. Always turning the puck over and missing the net on the off-chance he does shoot. And Wingsfan72..that's hilarious. The only difference being Clarkson actually goes hard to the net and plays a physical game. Oh, and actually scores on occasion.
-
This is the Leafs we're talking about. They want size, size, size, size, and more size. Filpulla is another small, skilled forward. The Leafs are sick and tired of Kessel and his ilk; they don't want another flash-in-the-pan who gets paid for his potential rather than his production (mind you, Kessel has produced much more than Filpulla, but has still struggled to provide what his talent suggests overall). If he could be had, sure. Could be good up with Pav. He would actually have a real winger.

WWard out 6-8 weeks, might the canes have interest in McCollum?
DetroitRedWings1993 replied to Richdg's topic in General
You're missing the point. Carolina's looking for a goalie who can log NHL starts and get NHL wins. McCollum is NOT that goalie. Carolina wouldn't give us half a bag of chips for him. McCollum's AHL stats are meaningless when you consider Carolina's need. To be of any value to the Hurricanes, he would have to prove he can hold down a backup job consistently and provide good starts when needed. He hasn't proved that at the NHL level at all. The Canes are a playoff team. They aren't looking for more AHL guys. -
Pull that stunt and there won't be any fans to watch this disaster you're suggesting. The idea is to lessen the time spent rebuilding. Adding proven talent now to an improving young crop of prospects is the best way to do that. And my eyesight may be going, but did you just say that you WANT to be a seller? So, you WANT to fail? You WANT the season to tank? That's plain stupidity. We are nowhere close to the basement. Selling now is beyond foolish. This team needs another top-6 scorer and fewer injuries. The D has improved to the point where Kronwall is finally emerging as a #1. Lashoff makes an effective defensive D-man. Quincey has gotten better. I still hate Ericsson and Kindl. Ship one or both off as part of a package for a top-6 goal-scorer and I'll be happy. Too many mistakes and too much wasted potential.

For once, praising Holland's refusal to make a trade
DetroitRedWings1993 replied to DetroitRedWings1993's topic in General
Exactly. It's just a really bad situation for both teams, really. What's with this disloyalty lately? First, Justin Schultz flat-out refuses to play for Anaheim. Now, O'Reilly's antics have basically damaged two teams, and almost did more damage to the second one. -
FYI, the phrase means coming out of a trade better than when you enter. It's used all the time. "Star" is a relative term. Different players are stars to different teams for different reasons. Do I expect to get Corey Perry for Ericsson and a 7th? Absolutely not. But quality players can be had. Holland tried, as Bruce Garrioch recently reported, to trade for O'Reilly. Given the asking price, that would've been a mistake. He's talked with the Panthers about Stephen Weiss. He's trying to make a deal. It's not like he's on vacation. As the poster before you said, it can be incredible what just a few players can do for your team. You never know until you try. So, know that I've told you what it means, yes, we need to add without subtracting in an overall, general "team" sense.

Recent Weiss rumors seem to be bogus
DetroitRedWings1993 replied to DetroitRedWings1993's topic in General
Bruce Garrioch confirmed the rumors that we inquired about him, via www.mynhltraderumors.com. I would love to add a player like Weiss. That would be great for us. We may have to deal a defenseman and we would be well-served to give Florida another call about Weiss. -
O'Reilly signed to CGY offer sheet
DetroitRedWings1993 replied to DetroitRedWings1993's topic in General
Four GM's that either A) don't know the CBA or B) are so egotistical and desperate to make big moves that they don't care. My guess is Sather from the Rangers, Holmgren from the Flyers, Nonis (would've made more sense if Burke was still in charge) from the Leafs, and Tallon from Florida.- 11 replies

O'Reilly signed to CGY offer sheet
DetroitRedWings1993 replied to DetroitRedWings1993's topic in General
Apparently, there's more to this. O'Reilly played with Metallurg of the KHL for two games after the season started. Per the new CBA, for Calgary to get him in the lineup this season if Colorado didn't match, he would've had to clear waivers. So, basically, they would've surely lost him to waivers or not have the option of getting him on the ice at all. Feaster didn't bother to read the CBA. Colorado bailed Calgary out of a disaster. Not to mention they would've lost their first and third-round picks as compensation to Colorado. It explains why no one tendered an offer sheet. Feaster's idiocy never ceases to amaze.- 11 replies

The D has played better lately, but overall, has been laughably bad. Far too many turnovers and dumb mistakes. No deadline splashes? Then we sit here and stay the same inconsistent team who lacks a reliable scoring punch and has a defense that's normally a sieve while everyone around gets better. Again. Either improvements are made, or the playoffs fall out of reach. It's that simple.

Carolina looking for a Veteran D-Man
DetroitRedWings1993 replied to SwedeLundin77's topic in General
I wouldn't move him unless we can get something significant back for him. His contract's coming off the books in the summer, anyways. It's not like we're trying to dumping salary. Make Carolina pay if they want him. If they don't, re-insert him into the lineup and see if the benching lit a fire under him. If it didn't, he won't be impossible to replace if we let him walk this summer. -
Losing Kovalev to the KHL is no big loss. He probably wouldn't provide much more than Sammy would if he were healthy. He wants to be in Russia. Let him go to Russia.
-
If someone came with a decent offer, we should at least consider it. We need to add, not subtract, though. It's not the time to give up on the season. We need to add assets that can contribute right this second.
-
Blake Wheeler could probably be had for the right price. I doubt Washington wouldn't listen to an offer for Carlson. I'm also wondering if the Rangers could be persuaded to move Gabby. It's probably a long-shot, but he would be dynamite here.
-
No one's going to take Sammy and his glass jaw for anything useful. We can't afford to just ship out players. We are not sellers. We don't just auction off pieces for nothing.
-
We need to add without subtracting. Dealing for talent while losing talent doesn't help us. We're right back where we started.
-
We have to have a reasonable expectation to re-sign anyone we acquire. We can't afford to tread water by losing whatever we gain before and at the deadline. No veteran rentals. Make them young up-and-comers who will actually be here for a while.

O'Reilly signed to CGY offer sheet
DetroitRedWings1993 replied to DetroitRedWings1993's topic in General
Colorado matched the offer sheet last night. Avs will have to wait one calendar year from yesterday to be able to trade O'Reilly. He's still four years away from UFA-eligible, so Colorado probably wants to avoid that. Many speculate they'll dump him around this time next year. They say that the relationship is too damaged. I give Feaster props for trying, but this means he's still not going to let Kipper and Iggy go at the deadline. He's still trying to force this team to win. Calgary's going to have to fire him if they want a rebuild. Feaster won't hear of it. Good for Colorado to finally get O'Reilly back in the fold. They're going to have to live with his salary next year until they can trade him, but at least they can enjoy him until then. I don't think he's going to improve enough to earn 6.5 mil next year. That's going to take a while, and it looks like it'll be with another team.- 11 replies

That, and he gets hurt going to get the paper in the morning.
-
Holland said he's "waiting to see what kind of team we are". Heck, I can tell you that right now. Slow, inconsistent on offense with a terrible defense and a glass jaw. He doesn't think that needs fixing? The trade deadline only works for A) contending teams who need a small tweak to be complete or B) teams interested in complete and total firesales. I don't see us as either at this point. I think it's going to be a typical Ken Holland deadline. And that means nothing gets done and the team continues to stay the same. I don't even have much confidence for this offseason. If it was that easy to outbid us for Suter (who was a virtual lock for the Wings before Minny swooped in and ruined it), then what hope do we have for Corey Perry? Every team in hockey is going to have an offer on the table for him. If he even makes it free agency. Edler's already off the list, and many believe Getzlaf is as good as a life-long Duck. Iginla WILL NOT make this team the contender we want it to be.
-
You're very welcome. I agree, should've had a link in the OP. I also agree that trading Franzen shouldn't be on Kenny's mind. Finding a top-tier, two-way defenseman and a reliable scorer is what should be occupying his time. Shopping Franzen or Filpulla or whatever other nonsense the media had dreamed up would be going straight into seller mode. This is NOT the time to become a seller. There is real talent on this team and they have proven they can win against the best even with a depleted lineup. We own wins against St. Louis, Nashville and Vancouver and have also taken Chicago to OT. This team needs a full, healthy roster and some more firepower both up front and on the back end. Giving up now would be foolish.
-
Briere answered these rumors pretty emphatically. He has no intention of going anywhere anytime soon. Besides, we don't have the assets to acquire him. We'd need to blow Philly away with an offer. And with Paul Holmgren, blowing them away begins with at least two roster players and draft picks. He wants a huge return for an aging asset. Not worth it. Briere's not the player he used to be. He could definitely help, but the price is just too high.
-
Well, Vancouver has a logjam of talented defensemen who all deserve playing time. I wouldn't be surprised if they moved him simply because he wasn't as offensively gifted as the rest. It's obvious Vancouver prides offense above all else. Colorado wants more offensive defenseman, and O'Brien doesn't fit that mold. May be more that he just doesn't fit his previous teams' plans rather than his attitude being poor. I'd take him on the extreme cheap. Not worth much more than a late-round draft pick. I wouldn't give any players for him.
