This is where Hollands over-trusting, over-valueing of older Wings bites us in the ass. To stay competitive in this league, sometimes you got to do stuff thats tough, that leaves a bad taste, that might piss off people at first...but that'll help you tremendously long term. Like, trading away Kronner and his 1,5 knees right now, if the Yotes take him on, to be able to offer for Tavares. Or able to trade for Karlsson, if the Sens wanna go rebuild, picks should do it, even though it would need a lot of them. But for a 27year old DMen, about whom I've never read a single negative word regarding work ethic, preparation, professionalism, off-season discipline? Worth it, because he'll remain outstanding to his mid 30s.

The Karlsson idiocy at Ottawa made me think...is there actually any good goalie, who is not already getting closer to his 40s (yes, Henrik...sorry..), whose GM might be dumb enough to trade him? And at what price?
-
Mike Green is "below average"? Not really.
-
*scratches head* Whatever.

Flint? Who is Flint? Btw, hadn't Mantha just reached exactly those 10 games in his first pro year, he wouldnt even be in his third year now, by the method they count that stuff.
-
No, age is not the criteria, number of pro years it is. Example: You come in at age 18, after 4 years your are eligible, at 22. AA came in at 19, is in his 4th year, so he is eligible, at 23. Larkin came in at 19, too. But he is only in his 3rd year, so not arbitration eligible.

Well..as a Wings Fan, why would anyone have paid a lot of attention to draft seeding rules... ...for the last 25 years..?? -
Rebuild or no rebuild, I think you go for it, if a franchise DMan becomes available. Just because they are rare and hard to find. Would be a different story if he were already 33 or 34, but at his age? My oh my.
-
Sure, would be smart on his part to say "no, no" to max. term.

Yup, Suter leads all skaters with 27:00 TOI. Greens 22:16 is 51st in the league.

Official 2018 NHL Amateur Entry Draft Discussion Thread

Me2. Big, strong...he could protect Dahlin for their entire careers, spent together in Detroit. -
Uhm...what? https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/l/lidstni01.html Make it 27-28 rather..
-
What doesn't sink in, at least with me, is the gap between youngsters (especially Larkin) that I think are actually deserving big money, and the money Holland throws at 3rd line talent like Abby. UFA or not, you need to have some sort of salary structure which for the most part reflects the actual performance of the players. Leading players in terms of salary not being leaders in terms of production...that's not a good thing.
-
Well, if we don't improve significantly, we'll miss again next year, making it 3 years out. And who guarantess we hit on that free agent? Have we, recently? I don't think so. Trading for and extending one big time player might be what we need to get another. And then you could build around them. The Sens idiocy might be the best that could happen (ok, many other teams will think exactly the same). Would it cost a hefty price? For sure it will. But I think it would be worth it. Two cornerstones who are 27 right now (yes, Karlsson doesnt guarantee getting Tavares, I know that), where else do you get those? Develop them yourself? That'll take even more years to get our talent to that level.
-
The more time runs by, the more Melnyk can forget about anybody taking on Ryan. Even Arizona can't help, Karlsson can submit a 10-team no-trade list.
-
@krsmith17: You really want to rebuild like, let's say, the Sixers? Or the Oilers? Miss the playoffs for 4-5 years? That should always be your last option, you only do that if you couldnt find a better way in the meantime. Like, trade for your franchise 1 D and sign your 1 C at the same time. IF that is possible, do it.
-
I'm not too familiar with the CBA rules in the NHL..can you extend him at the same time? When you trade for him? Or not? If you can, what's the point? You only make the deal IF he signs the extension, too. I wouldnt trade multiple firsts + X for a rental, that's hilarious.
-
I had 1st in 19, 1st in 21, 3rd in 19, 3rd in 21, Nyquist and Hickets (who i would prefer to keep, if possible) - so thats pretty much even. But, I didn't see that it is a full NTC on Gus.. Depends what they want..they might think Gus is crap and not want him anyway. Oh, we'll see. Because one aspect about all this is...he won't re-sign with the Sens now, I guess. And the rest of the league knows that. Nobody is going to throw them someone like Larkin, no way. And where is their leverage? None. The risk to have him walk without proper compensation will increase with every month passing, from now on. They better take those picks.
-
No way Larkin signs for less than that ridiculous Abby deal. Hell, 3.5 would be even less than Helm makes. That's insulting.
-
Back to my starting point...what's the price for EK, most likely? McDonagh brought two prospects + 1st + cond. 2nd (Namestnikov vs Miller is pretty much even).
-
One more problem, but that's not possible to simulate with that tool (or I haven't found how to): That trade needs an extension for Karlsson, ofc. That same 80/8 I calculated for Tavares.
-
Yeah, that was just a start for discussing it. I like the idea just for the fact that getting Karlsson is the absolute best argument we can possibly create, to lure Tavares. The exact details are debatable, like terms for our RFAs/ who do we ship out/ what pick might get it done with Arizona to take on a contract (maybe that 5th isnt even necessary?). My thought on Kronwall was that it might be easier to find a taker for him than for Franzen, because it's an expiring contract. BTW...it is that many 1sts, because I don't wanna send impact players (read: Larkin, Mantha, AA).

If these idiots really want to trade their franchise defenseman...makes me think, what is the asking price? How many picks, how good a prospect? What do you think? Could we even get in there?
