Why did Franzen get 10 min game misconduct?

Neil is a meat head, but Franzen needs to STFU if he's not going to do anything more than talk. Nothing drove me more bat-poop crazy when I played than those guys who would constantly run their mouths but as soon as the game got a little rough they'd run away like a little girl. If you don't want to fight, that's fine, you shouldn't have to, but don't run your mouth after the game.

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

The issue with Ehrhoff isn't his ability, it's his contract. You know how Franzen is perceived as a floater? Stewart really is a floater. He works just hard enough on defense to not get benched and has no desire to play a 200 foot game. Bingo. The Wings have a ton of young d-men, several of whom have the potential to be better than Myers. There's no need for them to take on that contract because Myers might get better in Detroit.

    Franzen for edler?

Fixed that for ya. Unless they can get him for next to nothing, that contract is too bad to take the risk.

From the way I understand it Buffalo would love to move him but can't.

Ehrhoff is definitely not a #1. I wanted the Wings to sign him when he was a free agent, but not for that contract. I don't think Buffalo will move him anyway, they already paid him over $20 mil of the $40 mil total his contract is for. $10 mil in year one, $8 mil in year 2, $4 mil the next few years. no to Myers too,

    Next Seasons Needs/Team Future

At this point Buffalo might trade Myers for Kindl straight up just to get out of that contract. And that would still be a bad deal for Detroit. Kid's been playing like Quincey for a lot more money with a lot of years left. That deal is exactly why you don't give a player a huge contract before he can legally drink in the US.

Ryan Miller, Steve Ott traded to St. Louis Blues

They got good value for a guy who was going to walk in a few months anyway. Stewart and Hitchcock have a history of not getting along, so moving him might be addition by subtraction in their eyes. Miller hasn't done anything in Buffalo because it's Buffalo. he can only play one position, he can't make the defense defend or the forwards score. Howard for Miller would have been horrible for the Wings.

    ESPN says....

He has 20+ goals in each of the last 6 full seasons he's played, including 41 in 10-11 and has shown an ability to rack up the assists if he plays with shooters, all while playing excellent defense. Outside if 06-07 and last year he's played 77 games one year and 80+ every other year and has played in all but one game this year. So how have injuries kept him as a border line checking line player his whole career? I'd flip one of Nyquist or Tatar for him straight up, or one of the D prospects, plus whatever it takes to make it work cap wise with absolutely no hesitation. The Wings need a guy that teams don't like playing against.

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

His last 4 healthy seasons, Weiss had 61, 60, 49, and 57 points. Last year he had wrist surgery. This year it's his groin. I don't think that makes him injury prone, just unlucky. To me injury prone is either a recurring injury (Hank's back) or several years of different injuries (Colaiacovo).

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

Yeah, I don't necessarily think any of them will be moved in the next week, but if they're going to get a top D, those are the 3 most likely options.

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

Phoenix has been rumored to be willing to move Yandle. Edler is apparently available from Vancouver. Nashville may or may not be willing to move Weber. They are all signed for a few more years. none of those teams should be looking to jsut rebuild and get a bunch of picks and prospects, they're going to want players who help now. Girardi and MacDonald are the best d-men available other than those 3 guys, and they are both rentals.

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

Vancouver, Nashville, and Phoenix are the 3 teams most likely to move a higher end defenseman, other than a rental like Girardi or MacDonald. All 3 of those teams are in positions to win now, so they would want guys who can contribute now. Put yourself in the shoes of another GM. Looking at the Wings roster, whoa re you going to be asking about? My top 4 targets are Nyquist, Tatar, Dekeyser, and Jurco. Smith still has time to improve, but he's been pretty shaky defensively so I don't know how much value he really has. Same with Kindl. In the minors, I might take a look at Mantha or AA, Pulk, Sproul, Ouellet, and Mrazek, and I'm not really interested in anyone else except as filler to make a deal even.

    2/27 GDT : Red Wings 6 at Senators 1, Franzen w/Hat Trick

Not by much, because the Wings are the team benefiting most from his salary being higher than his cap hit. If he's traded this year at the deadline, his new team will have a $259k hit, the Wings will have a hit of just under $2.7 mil. He's scoring 27 or 28 goals a season and plays solid defense for a $4 mil cap hit and a $5 mil salary. That is fantastic value.

So you want top make a big move, but don't want any of the Wings best young players to be traded. In other words, you don't really want them to make a big move.

It depends on what they do in free agency. They have 4 open spots going into next year unless they trade roster players, and 4 players who have spent time in GR this year who would need to clear waivers. Sheahan has a spot. I think Callahan will have to play his way off the team. I think that Ferraro and Glendening would both clear waivers if they don't make the team, and losing either isn't going to be a big deal if they are claimed. I think they're going to add one player, whether that's Alfredsson coming back or someone else. So: Zetterberg-Datsyuk-FA Franzen-Weiss-Nyquist Tatar-Helm-Abdelkader Miller-Andersson-Sheahan 2 of Callahan, Glendening, Ferraro That leaves Jurco in GR as the first injury call up. The cap is expected to take a huge jump because of the new TV deal. $4 mil isn't going to be huge. If he retires, there's a recapture penalty of about $3 mil a season if he doesn't play the last 2 or 3 years of the contract. Trading him won't reduce that.

You know that he's making $2 mil, $1 mil, and $1 mil the last 3 years of his contract, right?

    Question about Mantha

There's a rule in place to keep junior eligible players in juniors instead of the minors. They ave to be in the NHL or juniors, otherwise most of the top junior guys would be in the AHL making money instead of in juniors.

He's a bum, get rid of him.
  20. DickieDunn

    Question about Mantha

He can't play in GR until his junior season is over. Once that happens, he;ll probably join the team for practices, he may or may not play depending on if GR needs him. The primary reason for him to join GR would be to show him what it takes to be a pro and for the Wings staff to get a first hand look at him.

Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

I think Kindl for Gilbert straight up would work, and adding Andersson would be an over payment. I know that he isn't a star, but I really don't understand why so many people are so eager to trade Andersson away jsut to get rid of him. He's not a problem in the room, he works hard, he can kill penalties, and he's still young enough that he has upside. I don't get it. I don't want Ehrhoff for one reason: 2021. That's when his contract expires. I'd be really hesitant to take Myers too. He might just need a change of scenery, but he might just not be that good, and I don't want to be stuck with a younger Quincey for 5 more years with a cap hit of $5.5 mil. I wonder if Holland could fleece them and get Hodgson for less than market value?
  22. DickieDunn

    ESPN says....

Yeah, I think we could use a guy or three that other teams don't like. He only has 2 years left on his contract after this year, so it's not a long term commitment, and he can play wing. The problem is that Vancouver need a #2 center, so unless they move Edler or someone else to fill that hole, I think they're going to want a center for Kesler. Unless they want Weiss, I don't see him coming to Detroit.

Bertuzzi and Cleary haven't played in forever. They're on the team they need to play occasionally. Back to back games after 2 weeks off I'm surprised more guys aren't getting a night off
