I'm so tired of the "we're only two points out" argument. That's artificially jamming teams together thanks to the parity point. Buffalo and Toronto are dead last, only 6 points from 3rd in the division, 2 points behind Detroit both with 2 games in hand on Detroit. The Wings are 4 points out of 3rd place in the division after tonight. They're closer to the bottom than the playoffs. Go ahead and keep wearing those rose colored glasses and tell yourselves that everything is going to be OK. Just don't be shocked when they miss the playoffs, sign Vanek and Sheahan to extensions, and keep Holland and Trashill for another year because "they only missed the playoffs by a few points," just like almost every other team that missed them. I'd be ok with the Wings not being a great team if they looked like they had a coherent plan to get back to being contenders sometime in the near future. They don't. "Sign vets and hope for the best" is a loser strategy that will keep them in that "playoff contenders" category for the foreseeable future. Just like the Lions were when Ford Sr. was alive and running the team.

Every exec in the NHL disagrees with you that goons have a place anymore. Even back in the day they mostly just fought each other. How does Knuckles McPuncher fighting Punchy Cementhead keep a dirty POS from trying to take out a guy's knees? It doesn't. Know what might? A guy who can actually play hockey being on the ice with said POS and driving him through the boards. Give me McCarty or non-cokehead Probert over a guy like Twist, McGratton, or Scott any day of the week.

The problem with that is he gave so many of them crappy contracts that nobody wants anyone other than maybe Vanek, Green, and the kids. Helm, Abdelkader, Nyquist, Tatar, Smith, Kronwall, etc. are more or less unmovable right now unless it;s for basically nothing.

This is a bad team, and Holland doesn't seem to see that.

No, Ericsson was drafted to play defense because Andersson saw him filling in there for a game in Sweden. He was never going to be an NHL forward. Playing them on the wing now because the team is a little bit better off short term is focusing on the wrong thing. This team is going nowhere. Management needs to understand that and focus on getting this team back to contender status ASAP, not milking The Streak.

Their future is likely at center, they need to be playing center. Period. That's the best way to learn, and the focus needs to be on the future rather than hoping to squeak into the playoffs so they can lose in 5 games.

Except for the fact that he can't actually play hockey at close to an NHL level. I seriously question if he can play at an ECHL level.

Teams are playing not to lose instead of playing to win. That extra point for making it to OT is part of what drives it, along with the parity that goes along with it. As long as your team looks like it's close to the playoffs, a coach is less likely to be fired, therefore they have their teams play in a way to get the maximum points with the least risk. It's smart, it a way, but boring as #$^%.

I watched the Tigers all through their 119 loss season, Michigan football fall apart under DickFraud, and 25 years of the Lions bumbling fumbling and teasing. This Wings team is not close to a contender, they have a bush league coach, a GM living in the past just hoping to catch lightning in a bottle, and ownership more interested in playoff revenue and prepping their new arena than winning a Cup. Abby IS a 3rd/4th liner, just like McCarty and Lapointe were. Playing someone 18-20 minutes a night doesn't make them top 6 caliber.

I'd rather have a guy who can actually do something at the nhl level other than punch. Someone like McCarty would be great.
