Hartnell to Columbus for Umberger + 4th in 2015

Sorry, didn't mean to come off that way. I was just trying to explain that if we trade Franzen away now we could be looking at a 6 million cap penalty when he retires and that's why a trade wouldn't happen.

2014 Offseason League Signings and Trades

Recapture penalties are only for contracts signed pre-lockout. The 8 year max deal in the new cba is supposed to keep teams from drastically lowering a cap hit of a given player. So any new deals signed now won't have a recapture penalty. Also, Gustavsson officially signed with us today. 1 year, 1.875 million.

    SC winners and the draft.

So teams are bad, get high draft picks, and become good. Wow. Looks like the draft is serving its purpose. If anything we should be happy we've been able to not pick in the top 10 in like 30 years and yet still be competitive. People talking about us tanking can take a hike.

Younger, healthier, and have shorter contracts. Meaning they won't retire with term left on these deals. Meaning the recapture penalties aren't there. With Franzen we could be looking at 6 million in cap penalties if he retires early. Which is why he won't be moved. Kenny's not sleeping he just understands the weird concept of the future better than you do.

If we trade Franzen now and he retires 1 year before his contract is up we'd get hit with a $6 million cap penalty. That's probably why we'll keep our 25 goal scorer instead of trading for one.

Apparently Alfie wants to play another year, per St James.

Brad Richards bought out by Rangers

I'm sorry, but even the video games would laugh at that offer.

Compliance buyout expected to be used on Tootoo

All buyouts (except for those players under 26) are 2/3 the value over twice the term. Only difference between regular and compliance is there is no cap hit with compliance and there is a hit with regular buyouts.

Shawn Thornton will not be returning to the Bruins

What good does running around hitting people and creating energy do if they get scored on? Don't get me wrong, I'd love a high energy big hitting defensively responsible 4th line, but defensively responsible comes first. That's what our 4th line is right now. Besides, a healthy team could see a 4th line of Abby-Glendening-Helm and that actually could be a decent energy line. Either way, we don't really have room for Thornton.

    Dan Cleary may return...sigh

Or maybe we could be grateful for all he has given this team and support him in his last games as a red wing. The kids in GR could use a guy that know how to work and win at the NHL level. I fully expect him to play there or retire after the preseason. Also, if one meaningless signing makes you stop being a fan, good riddance to you.

    Detroit re-signs Gustavsson 1 yr $1.85 mill

Yes clearly Brodeur could propel this team to a Stanley Cup. Why did no one think of this before?
  12. The problem with the "us" feeling is it doesn't win hockey games. If the scouts say the euro is better than the michigan boy, I'll take the euro 10 times out of 10. That's how we know even if they're "not getting a chance." As far as Dekeyser, sure it's cool he grew up a wings fan in Detroit but I don't think that's anyones reasoning for liking him. Personally I like him because he came out of college and was immediately a solid shut down defenseman in the NHL and that's not an easy jump to make. He's a good hockey player and has become an important part of this team and will be for a long time. That has nothing to do with the fact that he's from Michigan. It doesn't matter where they're from, they all play for Detroit now and that's enough of an "us" feeling for me.
  13. So not winning a cup automatically equates to hurting the team? Man, screw us for signing Dekeyser and Nyquist and Tatar and screw the Islanders for signing Tavares because none of them have helped win cups either. They're all so bad for their teams. Wow. I can't believe anyone would want to sign free talent that they didn't have to spend a pick on and is already farther along than a lot of prospects they have. Not to mention he's a guy that can bolster the C lineup in gr which I believe is what everyone expects is going to happen, considering his agent's comments about Blash. Talent is talent whether we draft it and it develops over there or it develops over there and then we sign it and develop it further. Nobody said he'll be an experiment on the big club. He's just like every other prospect now. And he's one of our better ones at center so I don't know why anyone would consider this a bad thing.

Apparently we're close to signing Tomas Nosek outnof a Czech league. Anyone know anything about this guy?

    Trading up?

Well if we're trading one away we better be getting one back.

Nyquist Mackinnon Drouin Mantha Dal Colle Jurco Kulemin McDavid Eaves Miller Ferraro some bum Dekeyser Ouellet Sproul Ekblad Roland Mckeown Julius Honka Quick McCollum. I expect this roster by 2019 because I have won 6 straight cups. If only video games were reality and half of that could be real life. I'd kill for McDavid and MacKinnon. Mainly because this team needs a future #1 C. As far as next year, I'm beginning to warm to the idea of trading up to get DalColle or Ekblad. Ekblad might be able to step right in.

I think what he's trying to say is that that defense looks atrocious and the top 6, while not being the best top 6 ever, is still full of guys that can contribute and create offense. The top 6 could use some work, sure, but if we don't fix the D (top 4 specifically) we're in more trouble than if we don't fix the top 6. And don't say we need to sign a bottom pair guy, because we have 8 options already in the system. Besides, since you think Smith is a top 4 guy (which we know I disagree with), wouldn't it be nice to have a top 4 guy on your third pair? Bottom line is we need a top 4 guy waaayyyyy before we need a top 6 forward.

I agree he should get better, and he SHOULD become a top 4 guy. But he isn't right now. All the stats prove is that he played like one for a few months. So did Kindl in a shortened season. I'm not convinced. I just don't think the mental part of his game is there yet.

    The Franzen Hate.

The fact that you're wishing a person an injury serious enough to end a career is pretty classless. Hockey and what he's worth on the ice aside, that's low.

Like I said, I don't want Quincey either, but it wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen. The only guy in his prime we could sign would be Niskanen. And I still think he will want too much money. If he doesn't and we get him, and that makes Smith expendable, that would be perfect. But I don't think that's realistic possibility.

    Next Seasons Needs/Team Future

I was talking about Quincey in this thread, Boyle in the other. Boyle helps our puck movement and PP. Quincey gives the kids a dman that knows our system to play with.

Considering they both played 45 last year I'd be okay with them playing 70 each. That would actually be added health, and we'd have a better record because of it. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for adding a piece on the back end. But I'd rather look beyond the "he's big and strong and can hit" or the "he just scored a lot of points" in a contract year and is going to get more than he's worth. It needs to be the right piece. A guy that can help now that won't need a long term deal and end up holding the kids back. If we go the trade route and can get an elite quality dman for some prospects or young guys, do it. Obviously. I don't want to stand pat, but a third pairing guy who lnows the systems to help the kids wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen.
