I think if Quick was going to be out for the season, LA would be watching Howard VERY closely. But if it's three months and they can't take on more salary, then they'll ride it out with Zatkoff/Budaj as long as they can. Howard may be a deadline option If he keeps up his play and Detroit retains salary and he fits a teams budget, or by that point Holland may just keep him for insurance if the Wings are in the playoff hunt then expose him to Vegas and try to move him in the summer.

Kinda yeah, especially since he's never gotten the Wings past the second round since he became starting goaltender 7 years ago and was on some good teams for the first 3 ( I look at the second round loss to Chicago in 2013 after being up 3 games to 1 as the real start of the downfall of the franchise), but it's a risk you take when you trade any player. Sometimes a change of scenery, new team, new coach and new system can rejuvinate a career.

That trade tracker is pretty cool. Funny how in the trade for Lang, the Wings gave up (among other things) their 2004 1st rounder, who ended up being Mike Green. Not many of the other picks he traded to other teams amounted to much for them besides the Preds getting Sharp and to a lesser extent Comrie, and Rangers getting Moore and Leafs Ponikorovsky. He did trade Mike Knuble for two picks who ended up being Igor Radulov and Tomas Kopecky, but made up for that by giving up next to nothing for Chelios. Now if you look at the Devellano/Bowman trades, they got quite a few pieces of the '97/'98 cup teams for picks who amounted to nothing and future considerations like Fetisov and Murphy, or players who didn't matter much or at all for Maltby, Larionov and Vernon, then the big trade to land Shanahan in which they gave up good assets that didn't hurt them.

Well put. He's played two great games and i'm happy for the wins and for him, but he's long way from redeeming himself, or having other teams wanting him I just knew there'd be a Howard thread after Thursday. Lol

Just checked the score. 3-0 win! Jimmy with the shutout..what's goin on with him lookin like a $5 million goalie again? Games like this and NYR were very unexpected surprises. Good job Jimmy! It's kinda weird that he's already had two starts out of six games though. Not that -'m complaining, i'm happy with the wins and happy for Howard that he's finally playing like he's capable of again, but you'd think you'd want your #1 guy to play as much as possible so he gets in a groove. Is he being showcased? Was Mrazek being the #1 just something that was said tentatively, but they actually figured on a 60/40 Mrazek/Howard tandem? Or has it been the close proximity of games lately that has led to it? Was there a wide open net shot Howard stopped with the paddle of his stick tonight? I gotta see that!!

No there's no battle on the team, but there's always a battle on LGW. Lol But I think he was being showcased too with LA's situation. I found it weird that he was getting a start after only three games in which Mrazek was great overall and he's the #1. But then the Ottawa and NYR games were a day apart, and you have Howard's good numbers at MSG, which factored in as well i'm sure. If he keeps up his play when given starts, he might get his fresh start somewhere else soon enough.

I'd rather have Zatkoff, but Budaj makes less I think. Not like the Wings have to play him anyways with better options in GR.

At the end of an mlive article giving short bios on all the 2016-17 Red Wings roster players, it mentions that Edward Pasquale will be starting the season with the Wings as the third goaltender. Seems weird with the crunch for roster spots that led to two solid players being lost to waivers, that they would carry three goaltenders. Agreed. He's done nothing to earn it. Then again, that often doesn't seem to matter in Detroit anymore.

Well that was a VERY unexpected performance from Howard after he looked as bad in the first as he has for quite a bit of the last 2-3 years. Then all of a sudden he looked like 2010 Howard again. He stopped THREE breakaways, which are usually his achilles heel. Definitly stole this game, along with Miller capitalizing on a fluky blunder by Lundqvist for the game winner. Vanek again on the score sheet on the PP..he's been huge. I doubt tonight's performance by Howard is enough to get trade talks going, as he's been very inconsistant over his career. GMs in need of goaltending will want to see more first, but i'm sure it's helped get their attention. Good job Jimmy. He can't usually stop them at any point in a game.

Yeah he's looking better thank hell. I thought it was gonna be a real bad night there for awhile. But is he playing well enough for Lombardi to pick up the phone? That's the real question.
