  1. That took them awhile. He’s no Clarke or Parent, but he was a big part of their team in the ‘90’s, and definitely worthy of it. Thought it would have been done sooner. Then again, not all teams retire numbers just because they can. Like Colorado did with Bourque after his whole one season there. That still makes me laugh.

Yeah I don’t see them both getting traded, but any offers for either should be considered. In the case of NYI, seems to be Howard they are interested in. He’s got one one year left on his deal, and they need good experienced goaltending right now with Halak and Greiss having the worst numbers combined on any team currently. And trading for Halak and a pick makes perfect sense. He’s a UFA July 1. Either sign him for less as a stop gap measure, or let him walk. Moving Howard would also signal to many that the true rebuild is on. That’s not a bad thing.

Not saying he would. I’m saying technically, according to the CBA, Qualifying offers are required for a team to retain a player's rights, but the player and team CAN agree to a contract differing from the qualifying offer in cases where both sides want the player to remain with the team, but his stats/performance don’t justify the qualifying amount. He’s not going to get near $4 million anywhere in the league, so he qualifies and stays for less or rolls the dice as a UFA. But your right, he may not want to stay in Detroit regardless. Just saying it’s an option.

Today, Howard just by numbers. Team may not have either by the deadline anyways. Lots of talk of a Howard trade to NYI. Mrazek is in it as well, but not as much. If NYI trades, they’ll want Jimmy. Should get Halak and a second or third coming back. Mrazek I haven’t heard any rumours of in a bit, but Holland is phone working apparently,

Doesn’t HAVE to be. Under the CBA, he has to be qualified at the 4 million for the Wings to retain his rights, but he is free and clear to negotiate a deal with Holland for less afterwards. And i’m sure that will be an understanding between them before he’s qualified. He won’t get 4 million anywhere, and if he is kept around and wants one more chance to get in the team’s good graces, he’ll have to take a nice pay cut. It’s up to Mrazek (his right under CBA) to decide what he’s willing to play for.

Benny was leaky but can’t take advantage when you don’t shoot. I bet Semin could beat him up.

    Rumors Thread

This is true. Would be nice if teams were like that, but I guess they figured he’s hitting waivers because he’s odd man out and no ones making a trade, so we’ll wait and see if we can take him for nothing. If not, no big deal. I don’t think many thought that he’d continue to play well on a worse team. Could have led to no one trading. Popular opinion of him at the time was that his numbers and Cups were a product of the team in front of him. That and he was coming off a pretty bad first round series against LA. He proved everyone wrong though. I remember when St.Louis let him walk after trading for Lalime. Blew up in their faces.

I dunno about luck, but I agree with the rest. Good thing is goalies can adapt, and a team and coaching switch can change careers. 3-2. 3 goals on 23 shots against and 2 on only 10 shots for? We Better pick it up in the third. This boxscote looks like a bite in the ass waiting to happen.

No it doesn’t go away, but neither does his performance before that. He’s 25. Wasn’t that long ago he was putting up great (maybe even elite for a period of time) numbers, both in the regular season and his 10 total playoff games against vastly superior Tampa. That’s not lost on any team looking to get a possible steal for a draft pick. It’s not as if he was good one season ten years ago and bounced around to eight teams since.

No probably not. It’s not rooting for it. Wins are great and I enjoy them, but if they lose I’m not crushed. I see the bright side of it.

Of course they don’t revolve around him. And playoffs isn’t what this team needs. Been a Wings fan over 30 years, love winning games. But we need to lose. I view this season as a wash. Make great deadline deals, play the kids. Draft a lot in summer.

Dude. You do realize regardless of what happens, how hard he plays, Jimmy Howard will never raise a Cup in the Winged Wheel, right? He’ll never get closer than he has before, which is a second round loss. With or without him, this team is years away from contention. Jimmys pads will have changed colour or are hung up for good by the time the team sees another Cup. I didn’t start this as a Jimmy bash saying Mrazek should take his starts. He shouldn’t. Nothing wrong with an atttempt at showcasing Mrazek for another game or two with the deadline coming.

    1/16 GDT - Stars @ Red Wings - 7:30 PM EST

Damn. Easy now. No one said Mrazek should take JImmy’s job away. Trade deadline is fast approaching. Goalie on the block, but don’t like the low offers? Want to boost offers? Show other teams a reason to boost them. Only way to show them is Mrazek will have to play. After a shutout is a perfect time. Screw Jimmy and his feelings. He’s not taking this team anywhere anytime soon no matter how he plays. He can sit tight for a game or two.

He has started after horrible games before. Few times this season. Even iafter a couple of them. November 28, 30 and Dec.2. Three stinkers, pulled after 5 goals on 9 shots in one. i didn’t say he shouldn’t be starting right now. He’s playing well. Just saying if they want Mrázek to step up his game to step up his trade value, good opportunity to instead of just keeping Jimmy in starts. Jimmy should be cool with that. You know, helping out the franchise that kept him around in his injuries and slumps. But probably not, since his head seems to have gotten swollen a bit and he pulls tantrums when he’s taken out of games. Might make Mrázek think the team actually gives a s*** once in awhile too. That sometimes helps confidence and boosts play. Howard gets his daily ego strokes from Blash. Spare some love, Jeff!

    1/16 GDT - Stars @ Red Wings - 7:30 PM EST

I agree with this, but he has a point about Howard being given starts after horrible losses consistently. He shouldn’t be rewarded for that. Mrázek gets thrown a bone two or three times a month, manages to get a shutout, and is benched again when he should be rewarded for that. Can’t bounce back like the team said they wanted him too if he can’t build off even some small momentum. Its not as if it’s a Hasek/Legace situation. One was a Multiple Vezina/Hart winner, top 3 of his era. And at that time, the other was a career backup. Big difference between Howard and Mrázek. Neither racked up awards or are at the top of anything. Had Mrázek kept outplaying him, Jimmy would be long gone already. He got lucky that his work paid off while Mrázek’s game fell off. If it didn’t fall off, even though Jimmy worked hard and improved, he’d still be gone. Dodged a bullet. Hasek’s job was never in doubt or jeopardy.

Yep. Nabokov was off entry waivers, and Osgood was picked up after being waived by Holland when he traded for Hasek. Can only say the Nabokov thing was a dick move though. Osgood was let go and wherever he ended up wasn’t Detroit’s concern.

Was looking at Griess as another option from NYI, but his cap hit goes up to $3.3 million next season until 2020. Never mind.

Yeah I forget that sometimes, because common sense dictates to me that they have no shot at doing so. Kenny “Pipe Dream” Holland. Old and delusional.

Straight up doesn’t, no. I’m sure there would be a pick coming back as well. But another bonus for the Wings, if this is remotely true, would be Halak is UFA a year before Howard. If Holland is mulling this over, it could be because he can’t trade Mrazek, and he can trade Jimmy. At the end of the season he’s free of $9 million plus is goalie salary (if he doesn’t quality Mrázek and sign him cheaper). Then he’d be left with Coreau, but could sign a decent vet too. Rebuild on, no big deal. i’d def consider the rebuild fully on if the starting goalie is traded. That’s a positive. Edit- Oh yeah, he wouldn’t have to look for a vet to sign, because he’d have Halak.

f*** that pissed me off! Seems like it pissed Nabby off too. Was hard to expect him to clear waivers when coming back into the league on a $500k deal, but it still sucked that some ******* GM couldn’t resist. He wanted to come to Detroit, signed specifically to do so, then the waiver wire sent him down the line to NYI. Whatever though, league rule.

I expected Howard to start, but If they are serious about pushing Mrázek at the deadline and trying to get more value from him, starting him again coming off a shutout may be an opportune time to try boosting that value. Or not. Go Wings.
