Svech get hurt his draft year and Zadina was tearing it up, so the draft media narrative was like "Oh whoa here comes this Zadina feller he may steal the #2 spot if he keeps playing this well". I mean everyone here was truly astounded and thrilled that we were able to draft him at 6. That's saying something. To be fair to Hayton, Kotkeneimi, and Tkachuk... the later 2 stepped on to their NHL clubs right away and are having stellar freshmen seasons. Hayton stayed in juniors but has vastly improved in juniors since being drafted. All 3 of those teams could have simply had those players higher on their depth charts than Zadina, despite what the media was reporting or claiming to know. As of today Tkachuk and Kotkeniemi are easily better players than Zadina. You're not wrong, but Ottawa clearly had Tkachuk higher than Zadina on their draft list. So far that's proving to be a shrewd choice by them. I think we kinda gotta suck at least the next two seasons. After that time we will have burned off Helm, Glendening, Green, Ericsson, Daley, Howard, and Berniers current contracts.

IDK about draft position, but in terms of expectation I would agree. The kid was threatening to take the #1 spot his entire draft year. He was billed as a guy who could probably step into the NHL and produce immediately. He slipped to #6 for probably good reasons, and he wasn't able to step into the NHL immediately... heck his freshmen AHL season hasn't been all that impressive. On the flipside of that Kucherov was a 2nd rounder and spent a season in the KHL and another in the QMJHL after his draft year before becoming an NHL regular, and his first NHL season was pretty forgettable. Now he's a 120+ pt player. So it all comes back to the impossible to predict "potential". Based on the perceived expectations I had of this player, IMO he had a bad first season in the pros. He can still turn that around though, up and down years are a thing especially for young guys.

I think that's the most likely time it will go down. Holland n Devellano already alluded to the fact that they are open to making a big splash this off season to speed up the rebuild. Naturally I assume that means adding a D man because we are disgustingly bad on the blue line. Our friends in Winnipeg have like 1000 contracts expiring this off season, maybe they'll wanna send us Bogosian 2.0 since he's from Michigan

Athanasiou is gonna be part of a package to bring back a D man at some point.
