    Dylan McIlrath re-signed 2 years $1.3M $650 AAV

He's not unwilling to trade, he makes trades, I just wouldn't expect any blockbusters like it seems many are hoping for.

I don't think that's going to change. It seems his philosophy of how to build a team (through the draft) is as strong as ever. He's just changed the style of team he wants to build.

Nope! Mantha gonna clap bombs across this league. Take that to the bank, cash it, and buy a Mantha sweater with it.

As a fan I can't complain, fighting is one of the aspects that made me fall in love with this sport. I'm just not positive it's the right move... yet. However, I am happy they are taking a fresh approach. All the blah blah blah complaints that Holland is just going to do the same old same old and will never change, I think are demonstrably false. He sold off Vanek, Smith, Ott, and is quickly revamping the team to be more aggressive in the size and physicality departments. This team is not doing the same old typical stuff. I like that.

I remember when we recieved this guy in the Vanek trade most everyones initial reaction, including my own, was confusion as to why. Over the last month I think those motives have become a lot more clear. The draft saw a heavy lean towards size. We signed Mckee despite mosts expectations. We signed Witowski out of the blue. And we re-signed Mcilrath despite many thinking we wouldn't. It's quite obvious the organizition is looking to load up on, and insert size and physicality into the lineup. Not sure if its the best angle, but it's a fresh angle. I think we may really see this kid suit up for us when 2 of our roster Dmen go down. In my mind, after the praises sung about him in the AHL playoffs, hes the #1 D callup. Maybe Russo is ahead of him, but also remember that Greens spot will need to likely be filled by a kid around the deadline. He's only 24, and if we can argue that Smith had room to grow at 26 around here, i think it's fair to say he has room to grow too. It was coached into me as a kid, that sometimes youre gonna go up against a guy better than you. And sometimes that guy is gonna beat you. It's your job at that point to make that guy pay for it every step of the way. Get in his face. Get in his ear. Line him up everytime you get a chance. If I was GM i would have the same philosophy, which is why I'm pleased with Holland so far in this short rebuild. Its easy to say the power play is your enforcer when you have Datsyuk, Zberg, Lidstrom, healthy Franzen, and Rafalski on the roster. But when you dont have that, and your not good, at least be tough to play against. Mcilrath, Rasmussen, Mckee, Witowski, and other assorted draft picks, overwhelming adds to that. Its a quite large addition of muscle in a short period of time when one thinks about it. My only worry comes from looking back at the 80s and early 90s Wings. Holland learned the trade from Devalleno who built those teams, and Jimmy Dev is still advising him as well. Develano built those teams on toughness and young talent. Then phased a lot of that toughness out, replacing it with all of the talent that comes to one when one is a huge contender. My worry is that Holland is doing a 1980s early 90s rebuild on a 2017 team. Fighting and toughness was heavily favored back then, but now its speed and cheap cap hits thats in style. I know some of you welcome the rebuild but i hate this.

Except... ya know... the multiple seasons where he had more assists than goals.... Being that you're overly obsessed with the draft, I understand that you like prospects, but come on man, there is absolutely nothing to suggest that Svechnikov is better than Nyquist at this point of his career or in the future. We hope he will be, but hope does not make it so. And how long are you going to cling to this tired narrative that Bertuzzi was a bad draft pick? Since 2013 he's demonstrated that he is one of our most valuable selections, probably the most valuable outside of the 1st round. I actually agree with the overall case your trying to make. But the only thing that is "funny" is the way your trying to make it.

About a month ago Karlsson retweeted a tweet from Lebron James about how salary caps are dumb. That pretty much confirms to me he will hit FA and seek a huge contract with us.

    Chelios Released from Duties

According to Darren Dreger on TSN's Insider Trading His one-year contract has been terminated (it was to end at the end of this month) Chelios went to the Wings to say he was involved with player agents Anton Thun, Kurt Overhardt, and Rich Winter in an attempt to strengthen the NHLPA Could be a role for him in the NHLPA as an ombudsman, but cannot do both jobs at the same time No bad blood at all, Wings cut him loose. Chelios could circle back to the Red Wings if things don't work out with the NHLPA.

Tatar, Athanasiou, and XO's new deals

I think of the Red Wings like a company that just fell drastically short of their annual goals. Sales went down the crapper and a few middle of the pack salesmen had to be let go (Smith, Vanek, Ott). Now theres a corporate reshuffle going on, and management has some young, fresh out of college, go-getters (Larkin, AA, Mantha) theyre going to lean on to bring a fresh/new direction. And in the middle of this coporate restructuring, one of the middle of the pack salesmen, that didnt get cut in the first round of cuts, just demaded a huge pay increase on significant term, and is threatening to bolt to a competitor if he doesnt get it. That employee just topped my list of 2nd round cuts. I can replace his sales numbers for the coming year with a quick message to Thomas Vanek on linkedin.

If you told your boss you're going to leave for a compitetor in one year would he/she be happy? Assuming youre not the zberg of your workplace

Tatar, Athanasiou, and XO's new deals

Again, I don't have a problem with what he's doing, but how he's doing it. "if I don't get the term I want, I'm going to walk next year" Comes off as entitled and generally uncaring of the team he plays for. "I love playing in Detroit and want a multi-year deal that keeps me here" Comes off like a guy truly committed to the future success of the organization. Maybe it's a cultural difference as a previous poster noted. Either way, his choice of words rubs me the wrong way.

Tatar, Athanasiou, and XO's new deals

Note, I don't think Tatar is completely disloyal. If he was only about the money he'd gladly accept his 1 year deal at 5-6 million and walkaway as a UFA next year getting paid on the open market. Either he's worried about his shoulder and wants to lock in his big contract now, or he truly feels a 1 year contract would be disrespectful based on his play and at that point he might as well test the open market next year. I think Holland's decision on this one will really reflect where he's going with this team.

Tatar, Athanasiou, and XO's new deals

Wow So he wants to be on equal pay with Zberg and Mike Green, and a decent amount north of Howard, Nyquist, and Nielsen. $6 million on a multi-year deal essentially makes him a cornerstone in this franchise. Is he a cornerstone in this franchise? If his shoulder doesn't hold up or his production slips at all he would be un-tradable on that contract. If he's comfortable taking his services elsewhere, I say we oblige him.

Khan reporting that Tatar's upcoming contract will be $5+ so I believe that's what everyone is going on
  24. ChristopherReevesLegs

Tatar, Athanasiou, and XO's new deals

I don't disagree with your overall point, but you are again oversimplifying the issue. First off, how many eye lashes Holland batted when handing out other contracts is not knowledge you possess. What kind of contract he's offered Tatar, and whether or not that is a low-ball, is not knowledge you possess. Abdelkader, Helm, and Glendening all signed their contracts as upcoming or current UFAs. Tatar is not UFA, he is an RFA in arbitration. His situation is much different than the previously mentioned forwards. Comparatively, Nyquist received a similar contract as an RFA to the one that Tatar is seeking. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't, and I do not believe you think Nyquist is overpaid. Regardless, I haven't stated that Tatar is not worth what he's asking. I believe he is. It''s the thinly veiled threat of leaving if he doesn't get the term he wants that rubs me the wrong way. If you'd like to discuss that I'm all ears.

Send Mrazek and Tatar's rights to Philly for one of their many highly touted D prospects and a high pick.
