2020 Trade Deadline Thread (aka Veleno vs Rasmussen vs Fabbri vs Zadina)
ChristopherReevesLegs replied to The 91 of Ryans's topic in General
I think a changing to a new HC would do more good than harm at this point. Even if it's just Bylsma for the time being. Simply put; things can't get any worse, so there's really no harm to be done. These players gave up on Blash long ago. I have no complaints about the AA trade or not trading Bernier, and I'll bite my tongue a little until after the draft and FA opening up. When you have a team this bad, my philosophy tends to be burn it all down. If the team was busting their nuts, taking games to OT, and generally showing progress but still losing, I'd be A-Okay with this deadline result. But instead we are on pace to have about a 20 win season, 40 pts, and a -150 goal differential. Sell every expiring contract and just restart this team for all I care. No doubt, but Holland 180ed that as soon as he was no longer handcuffed to keeping the streak alive. Yzerman gets no free passes from me. I'm not gonna pretend selling low on an RFA and selling an aged out old Dman is some great TDL simply because the man is "new". It's a lackluster TDL. Do I want Yzerman canned for that? Certainly not, it's his first year. But maybe I expect a bit more at the draft and FA now... I think we can easily call the Fil and Nemeth signings bad ones already. Neither of these players are worth anywhere close to $3 mil AAV this year, and they certainly won't be worth that next year either. They contribute to the team in almost no meaningful way. Sure Nemeth is a warm body, but he's like the 93 Honda that's been sitting in your backyard for the past 10 years, and now you have to take that to work. She starts, sure, but there's bees living in it and no power-steering. It drives but it's probably worth $50 of scrap money. Are these contracts as bad as Abby's? No, but Yzerman doesn't get his sins washed away because his predecessor did a worse one. I think you can grade on expectation, and I certainly expected to have a bad team, just not THIS BAD. When I look at the teams record and team stats, I don't think I can possibly give a favorable grade, even if my expectations were low. When I look at the moves Yzerman made to correct this and/or push the rebuild forward, I'd give about a C. I'm about the Fabbri trade, but the rest of his moves aren't impressive and some I'd even call bad. We failed to acquire another 1st in a basement year, weaponize cap, and no coaching change isn't high on my list either. I think a meh C grade is deserving. I give the season a D -
Yeah I mean it's a Red Wings restaurant. Probably worth going in to. A lot of people used to go to Greektown b4 games. I assume that's still the case.

Lol I'm glad you know about his brother. He's like a legit cringe person, if that's a thing. I'm mostly citing Eric Engels tweet where he quotes an unnamed Wings teammate who basically says AA did his own thing and only wanted to play the game the AA way. There's also a clip from the first week of the season where we won and the whole team was happy and celebrating in the lockerroom. The trainers are in the lockerroom high-fiving every guy and celebrating as they enter, AA blatantly dips out early to avoid everything like he doesn't wanna be there. Small example but seemed telling. Every player was happy and having fun with the team except AA, who slinked off. Also he's vegan. How does he expect to build muscle.
-
Two years? IDK about that. I had renewed hope for him after the 30 goal season. But this year was just abysmal. He literally has the worst plus/minus in the entire league at -45. He doesn't appear coachable or well liked in the lockerroom. Time to move on.

I've already addressed this. I don't why you're making the stipulation that a cap dump cant also involve value. That distinction matters very little to me. With Brodziak? I would rather have the non-retired version of him than the weaponized cap version of him. Stevie has taken on his $1 mil+ payroll and that's it. It's a start, but with $14 million in extra cap right now, I'm disappointed he chose to weaponize a pocket knife and not a nuke. It also remains to be said that Yzerman is walking into an internal post-season with 8,000 RFAs he has to re-sign. I recognize a somewhat need to keep the books open and clear. -
The actual conference was pretty boring and nothing interesting was said. Just empty words, trust the plan, be patient, stuff. What can you really expect though? A smart guy is never gonna reveal much of what's behind the curtain. I don't remember Yzerman ever really being a standout media guy. He's pretty much the same way now. Pretty boring to listen to. Holland wasn't any better. It's whatever.

I don't think "being able to keep up with McDavid's speed" is a real thing TBH. AA is not good in the cycle, he's good at 1v1. What're Connor and Batteries gonna do? Take turns driving the net? AA's ideal location is a 3rd line checking line. Cause on a good team he can possibly add 50/60 pts to a team from that position while his linemates compensate for his defensive BS.

I've had drinks in there. Just never ate the food. It's just a very gimmicky corporate establishment if you ask me. I'd rather eat $30 vegan sushi tacos at a trendy dive bar with bad hipster art on the walls.
-
Am I I'm the only one who thinks AA will not work out in Edmonton? I think he'll hurt their top 6 if played there.
-
I always view this place as kind of a "trap" so to speak. It's always crowded AF and I assume the food is like Apple Bees quality (I never ate there). But I guess if you wanna do Red Wings stuff it probably makes sense.

I don't care at all about AA. I was expecting one 2nd rounder for him, so I'm happy about the return Holland gave us. AA sucks and everything points to his attitude sucking as well since the day we drafted him. We should have sold high on him, but Yzerman had to have his precious "observation year" I'm not mad about it though. "Trust the yzerplan" is the meme of the year. I don't buy in. Yzerman is just a business man same as Holland and I judge their moves equally. IMHO Holland was doing an excellent job rebuilding once the streak ended and he was no longer handcuffed to maintaining that record. The most true nugget of wisdom I have in my smooth-brain is that the majority of the purpose that Yzerman was brought in is marketing. Look at what his hiring accomplished. We have just witnessed the worst season in 700 years of Red Wings history and everyone for the most part is "okay" and on-board with what the team is doing. Would that same attitude maintain this year under Holland? Certainly not. The fanbase had already turned on him. So the Illitche's have lulled you all into being docile good-boy fans by hiring your favorite old player. Now they can rest easy and continue to suck for the next 5-10 years and you won't say s*** about it cause you "trust duh yzerguy plan" Don't get me wrong, Holland has made his mistakes, and Yzerman made a lot of good moves in Tampa. He's a good GM. But I will not sit here and talk out the side of my neck and tell you Yzerman had a great season. After drafting Seider and trading for Fabbri there's a whole lotta garbage and nothing. Are my expectations too high? I don't think so. I expect to at least field a team that plays with pride, grinds, and fights for it, even if we lose a lot. We didn't do that. We were a joke. A mess. A big fat mistake. If we're going to let go a GM of Holland's tenure and success, I expect the replacement to be impressive in ability. I haven't seen that in Yzerman (yet). I hoped he would bring a new angle and creativity that Hollland lacked, but it's clear to me now he intends to do pretty much the same stuff and slog through the next 5-10 years of drafts. That''s fine, just a bit disappointing. -

I don't care at all if the deal is large and complicated or small and simple. You don't know that Kase was their first choice at all fella -

That's quite a few presumptions Incorrect. We did have a young winger to move: Athanasiou. We also had Fabbri, Mantha, Bertuzzi who are all on expiring contracts and could be moved. You don't know that in the slightest You also don't know that Why would they limit themselves to one move? And if they did, how does that benefit them at all? Keep beating this drum, but again, no, they are not "very rare". They happen multiple times a season every season. -
"Fr - end" Ho ho, that is brilliant sir

Correct. The trade was for Kase... and also for the contract of David Backes, whom Boston needed to Dump. Not a pure cap-dump for picks okay, but a contract dump of an overpaid player all the same. Before Backes it was Callahan and Marleau less than a year ago. There will probably be more when the cap crunch comes in July. These trades happen every year, usually multiple of them. So I still don't know what you're on about. -

>implying we don't already have a culture of losing You absolutely can do the first point. Yzerman just didn't. Personally, if the right deal pops up I'd be absolutely okay with trading ANY of our so-called core players. Not one of them is talented to the point of being untouchable. And I would like to acquire untouchable level players. Cap dumps for picks literally happen multiple times every year. I don't know what you're talking about. It literally just happened with the Backes contract. -
Allow me to pontificate for a moment for your edification Purity =/= whiteness Observe the hue of Athanasiou, Daley, and Bowey. Creamy. Beige. These are mixed, multi-racial athletes... "un-pure". Now observe Givani Smith. That's the hue of strong, powerful, pure, black man. Therefore I maintain my original statement, however casually racist it might be, that this team will be pure again come July WITH Givani Smith on it

I don't think Yzerman is a magician, but I think some fans are placing that level of hope in him. A 2-3 season turnaround would certainly be magical. I don't see it happening though, and Yzerman has given no indicators that he's got a rabbit in his hat where that could happen. In fact he's spent most of his face to face time with the media so far pumping the brakes and trying to squash any hype. He spent most of the season just throwing doo doo at the walls in trades, hoping some minor transaction might pay off. There is no miracle coming. There is no grand yzer-plan. He's gonna slow roll this team and slog through drafts for the next decade. -

2015: "3-5 years of retooling and we'll be back" *no meaningful improvement* 2016: "okay 3-5 years of tanking and we'll be in good shape" *no meaningful improvement* 2017: "haha just 3-5 more years" *no meaningful improvement* 2018: "Okay NOW it'll seriously be just 3-5 more years" *no meaningful improvement* 2019: "Boy we finished that season off strong at the end there, this team is gonna be good in 3-5 years" *complete fall off the deep end* You: "3-5 seasons and we should be good" -

You can trade high-value players and get high-value picks in return. Yzerman didn't do this. You can weaponize your cap and collect overpaid contracts in exchange for picks. Yzerman didn't do this. What did Yzerman do? He sold low on an RFA and got a middling return for a washed up old Dman. It's not exactly impressive. If this is the way we will be rebuilding, we will be at this for quite a while. -

I was reading the youtube chatbox throughout the presser. The casual fans still seem to think Yzerman will have this team turned around and contending in 2-3 years lmao Yzerman took on Tampa team with Stamkos, Hedman, St. Louis, and Lecavalier, and it still took him about 5 years to get them to contention. I'm not 100% convinced this roster has even 1 true cornerstone building block on it. -

Presser still going, but Yzerman appears to have no plan. Or his plan is to just do nothing and wait for draft picks, if you consider that a plan. Patience, patience, patience, patience, aka tolerate my losing for the next 10 years while I sit back and make small meaningless tweaks -
Daley and Bowey will be gone in July and then the team will be pure once again
