Regardless of how he puts himself in the situation (waiting or not waiting), this player absolutely panics quite a bit. When the defender is on his doorstep his decision making goes to s***. That's either due to lack of composure under pressure, or lack of ability to make the correct adjustment. I much more tend to think it's the former and not the later. I mentioned Ehn because Ehn has similar issues with anticipation, but at the same time stands in stark contrast to Cholowski when it comes to decision making. Both Ehn and Cholowski seem to have below-average ability to process the play. I think we both agree we don't expect Ehn to ever improve in that department much, but with Cholowski I do expect some and hope for a lot. However, unlike Cholowski, Ehn is already sound in his decision making. He's never gonna make the sexy play, but he is calm and composed under pressure, and almost always makes the smart decision with the puck no matter the situation he finds himself in. I cannot say the same for Cholowski. When free of pressure he looks decent enough out there, but when he's being hounded the B. Smith brain takes over and he suddenly becomes prone to a rash mistake. In my mind that is 100% a panicky player with a lack of composure. To be fair to Cholo though. One should expect a 21 year old Dman to lack composure. Hronek is the exception, not the rule. I think the Wings rushed this kid wayyyy to quickly into the league.

The kid has definitely gotten better since the beginning of the season without a doubt. Especially defensively. Hence why I agree with Ben Simon casting him into the ocean to sink or swim on special teams and the 2nd line. However realistically he's still probably only an AHL 3C at this point. Still impressive in it's own right for a 19 year old. I'd say he needs a full season as 1C in GR next year. There's absolutely no reason to rush this kid developmentally. His game was nowhere as complete as Ras's when he turned pro.

He's referring to the bolded: You're saying he needs to rush so that he doesn't rush. Feel free to contest my definition of hockey IQ, but I break it down into two distinct categories: Ability to process and anticipate the play, and decision making. An elite hockey player like Zberg can not only anticipate the play that is going to happen very well, but also makes the correct decision almost every-time once the play evolves. A player like Ehn has relatively low anticipation - which is why we don't often find him making creative offensive players - but he has very high decision making and plays within the system well making the correct decision once he's there very often. Cholowski has neither good anticipation or decision making. He incorrectly judges time and space, both when carrying the puck and passing it. And then when the wolves are on his heels he panics and makes the incorrect decision much too often for my liking. Poised: 1. graceful and elegant bearing in a person. 2. composure and dignity of manner Neither 1 or 2 describes Cholowski's play with the puck

Alright I'm gonna go rip a fat dab and space out for a while. Maybe come back for the 2nd, but there's an interesting spot on my bedroom wall that might be more interesting to stare at. -

Yeah capecrap movies are dead to me, but the batmans are usually the exception. Loved all the dark knight series ones. Screw Ben Affleck thou. I think Robert Pattinson will do fine as Batman. Paul Dano as the riddler lol. JOHN TURTURRO. and Colin Farrell as the penguin? Will be interesting to say the least. Definitely like the darker grittier noir style. Loved what they did with the joker this year, that movie was super darker and grittier as well. -

Oooooo were doin like an even grittier batman with box cutters in his chest? -
Rushing pucks and making sloppy passes =/= calmness and poise. Calm players with puck poise don't make rushed sloppy passes. If he's holding on to the puck for too long and then getting eating alive for it, that's called being slow between the ears. Which is what I said in my OP. He's stupid. He doesn't process the game at fast enough level.
-
We're not even watching the same team anymore That's not calmness. That's stupidity and poor gap control. He will rush pucks into forwards skates and make rushed sloppy passes as soon as he feels heat every game.

Sure among his junior peers his defensive skills looked good, I agree. I'm sure if we sent him back to junior he could PK and all that too. The AHL is not a junior tournament. It's a pro league full of developed borderline big club players. And he certainly is in over his head with them. But it's good learning for him. He's still trying to figure out to defend at pro level. You've been up and down two threads now rabidly defending your boy because "he plays the PK this" and "defends leads that". And now we're agreeing he's not all that great? How about if I use the term "below average". Would that assuage you? Then you obviously have a Brendan Smith level opinion of Veleno. Even though play-wise and pedigree wise there's every reason to believe Rasmussen has a higher ceiling and better track record of success.
-
I don't think he's lazy. I think he's stupid and prone to panic. He does the same BS he does in the NHL in the AHL as well. Guy should have NEVER played 52 NHL games as a first year pro. I'm suspicious that Holland felt desperate to shore up the D and thought he could just thrust Cholo in there and he would just figure it out and survive like Hronek did. For the love of all that is holy Yzerman just keep him down in the AHL. He looks like he needs at least another full season down there, if not two, just to get his wits about him.

He's 2nd line C. Of course his line is out late in games. Duh. WJC - A tournament for juniors - Not developed AHL players. Seider was playing like 30 min a game in that tournament. He's not doing that in the AHL, as he shouldn't. Precisely why he's not great at it. I'm sure he's growing and making progress, but I'm not going to pretend this is some defensive stalwart out there. He's in over his head and learning by trail by fire right now. There's every reason to think Ras has higher upside. Drafted 21 picks higher in the first round. Entered the league more complete and well rounded. Better track record of success so far. I'd like to see some argument/evidence that doesn't just hinge on "well I watch the games, and no else, and I think he's better" I remember Rasmussen's draft like it was yesterday. Everyone salty that we didn't take Vilardi. Everyone passing around BS speculation that he's only a 3rd line PP specialist, as if the Wings would draft for that that high. You going on and on about he's not actually a C despite nothing to back that up. You're still carrying that bias despite the mounting evidence in front of you.

Approx 2.4 secs b4 I had to go to the bathroom and clean myself up lol how did u find this -
Veleno plays penalty kill precisely because he is not good defensively. Cleary and Horcoff have both said as much. That this is player who's leaned on his tremendous scoring in previous leagues and hasn't had to develop his defensive game as much. The Red Wings need this to be a C who they can throw out against any other teams top line, and so they are trying to cultivate that in him. I suspect this is also the reason he's playing 2C. Turgeon is playing a much better defensive game and is scoring at pretty much the same rate as Veleno, but he's stuck at 3C. Why? Cause Turgeon is probably never gonna be a piece that makes the Red Wings, and in the longshot he does it will be in a very minimal role. Even Pearson is scoring at almost the clip as Veleno at 4C. But this is a development league and the Wings are trying to develop Veleno over Turegon and Pearson. I wholly agree with that approach... but that does not at all mean Veleno is having some tremendous season. He's not. Hirose (0.87 ppg, -2) - Rasmussen (0.74 ppg, -3) - Tangradi (0.83 ppg, -3) Svechnikov (0.53 ppg, -10) - Veleno (0.40 ppg, -25) - Terry (0.94 ppg, -10) There are some games where Veleno is absolutely flying out there. You can tell he has a lot of raw potential. But that's all it is right now: potential. He's the obvious weakest link in that top6 right now. At the moment this kid is truly an AHL 3C at best. Still impressive in its own right for a player his age. And you're right. He has a really bad +/-. 1,068 skaters have played in the AHL this year, and Joe Veleno is dead last in the league in +/-. 1068th. Meanwhile Rasmussen was an NHL 4th line winger who played the 2nd PP unit in hist first pro season and held down the job well enough, even though the Wings probably would have preferred to develop him as the Griffins 1C last year. This season I have no doubt he could probably have played as a 4th linger winger on the Wings again, but like Seider I do prefer to keep him away from this dumpster fire team and get him the top minutes in GR. I'm guessing after the TDL Ras will get called back up to the Wings (unless no one wants our players and we don't move enough people) and I wouldn't be surprised if he get elevated to the 3rd line. No one's calling a Veleno a bust. But I am saying he was more well-rounded and ahead of Veleno at the same age. Just as he's the better player this year.

That's the fun part We put Mike Millbury and Barry Melrose in a room with live broadcast feed. They have to go shot for shot until someone says something deemed bad enough for termination. The survivor is awarded a non-terminable lifetime contract with NBC. Neither is told these stakes, just that they have to drink. Worth it? At the end of the day Tappen was dragged into all this by JR. Never liked him anyway so whatever.
-
I mean I understand the grounds for termination. It was a co-worker and his comments made that co-worker uncomfortable. That pretty much seals the deal. I don't wanna say she doesn't have the right to be offended. She does. But context kinda matters here. He was on podcast known for raunchy jokes and lockerroom stories. Every episode they're chirpin' each other, talking about taking shrooms, and bangin chicks. What he said is considered MILD on that show and he was clearly just making a joke. I don't know if you've noticed Kathryn, but uh... YOUR HOT! Sharpie's hot too! He was complimenting you both with the joke. Patrick Sharp didn't seem to care... You'd think she would know JR well enough to know he's just trying to be entertaining. JR doesn't want to actually have a threesome with his two co-workers, one being male (although patrick is a cutie...) He also raves about Tappen in the chiclets interview as well. About how professional and great at her job she is. And I suspect that might be the root cause of her being offended here. He talks about how she really takes hockey seriously and doesn't just want to be known for being a pretty face on TV, which can happen for a woman covering a mens sport. That right there tells me she might be hyper-sensitive to being sexualized even in the slightest. But if that's the case, then don't be out there wearing low cut dresses at the NHL awards every year. Little boys across Canada are touching their willies to you. Crazy what you can lose your career over these days. Good reminder though for all the men out there. Hide your power level and keep your head down. Don't joke or do anything off color. Be a boring beta male, do your job, and go home. You don't have JR money and you'll be living in a box when you career goes down the tube because you made one comment about the new girl in accounting being sorta cute.
