Looking ahead at expansion draft
ChristopherReevesLegs replied to nyqvististhefuture's topic in General
I'm not saying the kid doesn't deserve credit for what he's done, there's just too many far more attractive goalies out there for him to be on Vegas's radar. I'm hoping Coreau will be our big bodied back up behind Mrazek or Jimmy for the forseeable future. -
Pretty much the same here. Was going to be disappointed when they let him walk without a new contract or shot at the NHL. Honestly thought that was going to happen with Ouellet, Sproul, Marchenko, and Russo leap frogging him for some reason I don't understand.

As of right now those guys have to be exposed or their starters will be. Of course that can change. Coreau is older and absolutely should have good numbers at this point. Most of those goalies I listed are younger, highly scouted goalies, with a lot of league interest and a ton more room to grow. This is going to be a guy they stick in the AHL, not the NHL, for the next few years. They're going to look for someone who can potentially be a star one day, not Coreau. Absolutely no way Coreau is selected over Subban, Stolarz, Grubauer, Korpisalo, Mazanec, Wedgewood, Sparks, or Bibeau. Also if we expos some of Vanek, Helm, Abdelkader, Sheahan, Kronwall, Smith, Marchenko, Ericsson, Jurco, Howard, and/or Coreau theyre going to take Coreau?? They only get one choice off of us. It's not going to be our very average backup goalie. -

Pickard, Vasilevskiy, and Murray will only be protected if Varlamov, Bishop, or Fleury are exposed or traded. Varlamov could be exposed, but Bishop and Fleury never will. And if theyre traded it will force the receiving teams to expose other goalies. Vegas will draft 2 good goalies and someone young for their AHL team. They don't need a 25 year old career backup. Which of those goalies has done worse? I listed guys I would take over Coreau if I was Vegas. There are plenty others out there that are about the same as Coreau, so I didn't bother to list them. I really don't believe Coreau is in any danger. They need a young goalie to develop, and most of those guys are young and quite valuable prospects. -
It's kind of strange he wasn't called up sooner than now. He's been doing well in our system for a while and won awards at lower levels. I was beginning to think he was never going to get a shot.

Malcolm Subban, Linus Ullmark, Calvin Pickard, Joonas Korpisalo, Anton Forsberg, Laurent Brossoit, Marek Mazanec, Scott Wedgewood, Magnus Hellberg, Anthony Stolarz, Matt Murray (If Fleury not dealt), Andrei Vasilevskiy (If Bishop not dealt), Antoine Bibeau, Garret Sparks, and Philip Grubauer. All those guys are just as cheap, younger, and have far more upside. I'll repeat, Coreau is in absolutely ZERO danger of being selected. -
Jurcos a mistake. Its apparent at this point that he was carried by Huberdeau and Beaulieu in juniors. Those sleek hands he advertised? Never showed up. Guy will be in Europe before you know it.

Look around the league. There's going to be a lot better 25 and under goalies available than an undrafted 25 year old guy with below average numbers who projects to be at best a backup. -
Who knows when he asked to be traded. He may have been the one sitting because of this. Dont get enough playing. Demand to be traded. Play even less.

it's an interesting move either way. Trading Helm and Vanek for some picks and possibly shedding Ericsson would be popular around here. Seems like hockey journalists in general believe there will be a lot of back rooming dealing among Vegas and the GMs. If I'm Ken I'd work out some sort of deal with them where they agree to take Ericsson or Howard. Both are good players, its just the hit and term Vegas may be opposed to. I'm sure that can be worked out in a shady way. -

Of course we could be looking at this all wrong, they may not want any of our longer contracts or old players and just take Sheahan. Wouldnt surprise me if they wanna stay lean by the time they get to us. Other teams may expose better older players than we do. -

Heres another fun one. Say u deciede to trade Vanek and go the abby pick rebuild route. Knowing youre likely going to lose Helm at the expansion, wouldnt u trade him at the deadline as well? Forcing Vegas to take E, Howard, Sheahan. Obviouly hoping they take E or Howard. -

F: Zetterberg, Vanek, Nielsen, Tatar, Nyquist, Mantha, Athanasiou Exposing: Helm, Abdelkader, Sheahan I can see the Wings really wanting to keep Abby though. Maybe a backroom deal gets made that has Vegas taking Helm -

True. Forgot to consider Vanek's return. So lets assume Vanek nets a high pick. Then the scenario becomes: Vanek + Helm vs. Abby + high pick. This is assuming Vegas would choose Vanek, Abby, Helm in that order of priority -

Precisely. If Vanek is traded Vanek is gone. On the flipside, If we don't trade him Vegas will take him. The only way to keep Vanek on this team is an extension and protection at the expansion draft. That would mean exposing both Helm and Abdelkader. So the question is, would you trade Abby for Vanek straight up? If yes, then we must extend and protect Vanek. -

Tatar will be protected. Helm and Sheahan are probably their best options. The only thing I can think is that they may find themselves needing to add salary... because of that they may have no problem eating that contract especially if they need Dmen -

If I'm Vegas I get a deal done with Vanek and call it a day on Red Wings. If Vanek is traded by us prior, I take Helm. If Vanek is extended and protected by the Wings prior to the draft (likely exposing Abby), I'd select one of Helm or Abdelkader. The only other scenario I see happening is goalies are traded and shuffled around the league prior to the draft, leaving no one better than Howard available and so he is selected as their starting goalie. Seems like we're most likely gonna lose Vanek or Helm. Also perhaps an off chance they take Ericsson if D-men become scarce -

Ok whoa whoa that changes everything. So they will have a 48 hour window before the expansion draft where they can sign any UFA or RFA? So if we left Tatar exposed they could negotiate and sign him to a contract with no compensation heading our way? -

ChristopherReevesLegs replied to nyqvististhefuture's topic in General
OK so it makes little sense for Vegas to waste a draft choice on someone like Vanek, when they can just use the 48 hour negotiating player to snag that player anyway. I'm guessing that's different with an RFA like Tatar. They would have to draft him or offer sheet him in the negotiating window? Anyone have a list of the players who will be exposed and need to be protected? I don't understand capfriendly at all. -

So Vegas can draft players without contracts that aren't protected? For example if we did not protect Vanek Vegas could draft him and then negotiate a contract with him before FA? Does same apply to Tatar?
