He was drafted 19th overall. I would be OK with a middle six winger. If he was drafted in the top 10 or 15, then I would be very, very, very disappointed. What disappoints me the most is that Brock Boeser was taken 4 picks later. Obviously, i would rather have picked him. Saarajarvi was a 3rd rounder. If he at least turns out to be a 3rd pairing, I would be OK with that. I am just not going to expect Datsuk, Zetterberg type picks anymore. Those days are gone. So even if all we have to show from that draft is a middle six winger and a 5/6 dman, its okay. Not every year is going to be a home run. 2014 was a decent draft for us and 2016 was tremendous. I am OK with 2015 being a little light.

1. Why even bother with a tie? 2. That guy has more hair at his advanced age than I have ever had in my life. (I am not bald by the way). They need to bottle his hair genes man. They could call it Burpecia.

The Holiday tradition: 2016 Draft thoughts.....
Neomaxizoomdweebie replied to Richdg's topic in General
This draft sucks. Holland doesn't have a clue how to build a team with a salary cap. He needs to go. -
Even if only Svech and Saarijarvi make it, it would still be a successful draft.

https://www.thoughtco.com/nhl-draft-picks-2779293 Considering that only 19% of drafted players make a meaningful impact in the NHL, then if only 2 of those picks become legit NHLers, than it was at least an average draft. Rass will start on the wing in the NHL like Larkin did. https://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2018/04/detroit_red_wings_prospect_mic.html The Detroit Red Wings envision Michael Rasmussen anchoring one of their top two center spots, along with Dylan Larkin, in the not-too-distant future. But when Rasmussen breaks into the NHL - the Red Wings hope it can be as soon as next season - he'll be playing wing. He's adjusting well to the position during the WHL playoffs - in fact, he's been dominant there. https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2018/03/31/red-wings-prospects-michael-rasmussen-dennis-cholowski/475487002/ Horcoff said. “Playing center isn’t easy for a young guy, there’s a lot of detail that go into it. Him being able to play the wing is going to give (coach) Jeff Blashill more ability to play him. Maybe he slides over to the wing like Dylan Larkin. “It’s easier for a young player to come in at winger than center, and that he plays wing and is having success while doing it, it gives us a lot to look forward to.” My lines would be: Bert-Z-Nyquist AA-Larkin-Mantha Rass-Nielsen-Svech Helm-Glen-Abby Wit/Frk 3 scoring lines, 1 checking line

1. I have no idea what this means. 2. Slegr earned it legitimately. He had no control over being traded at the deadline to the team that would eventually win the Cup. He had nothing to do with Fischer being suspended in the Finals resulting in his playing in one game. The rules say that if you play one Finals game, you get ur name on the Cup. He did it honestly and by the rules. He didnt manipulate things to make it happen. It was completely circumstancial. He has nothing to feel bad about. There are alot of names on the cup that shouldnt be. Slegr's isnt one of them. He's a member of the Triple Gold Club. He may have been fortunate when it comes the Stanley Cup, but you don't just luck your way into that prestigious honor. -

Correct. OEL would be a great addition for sure. And if there was a way to get him long term in a "hockey trade", I would do it absolutely. The issue for me is that most teams who are going to trade someone like OEL is that they are going to want either an OEL caliber player back (which we don't have) or a combination of younger roster players, prospects or and/or draft picks back (which we do have, but not enough to give up for one player and still rebuild). If I could get a top pair 22-23 year old in exchange for Larkin I would do it. If I could get a good young defenseman with one or 2 picks I would do it. But giving up multiple rebuilding assets for one player (unless we're talking McDavid caliber) is just not the right thing to do at this time. In a few years time, if the team is better, and there are more assets to trade, then yes. But we aren't there yet. -
Actually, it should probably go in the "My Fantasy" thread.

Pocklington had his removed. So I am sure he means Slegr. He has his name forever engraved on the most hallowed trophy in major league sports. I bet he feels pretty good. I would. -
Miss that show. If only he had kept it in his pants.

"Rebuild" means you don't trade young roster players, prospects, or draft picks for high-priced soon to be free agents. You do totally the opposite. -

I was at least open-minded until this gem: Unheralded blueliner Nick Jensen, who was a fifth-round pick in 2009, played in 81 games and provided strong defensive play for the Red Wings, giving him positive shot differentials, and that shouldn’t be taken for granted. He didn’t reach the NHL until he was 26-years-old, but Jensen has been a solid player, and it may be time to give him more responsibility. -

Except I wouldn't substitute Larkin for a 1st rounder. Larkin is a known, he's a top line or at worst, a 2nd line center. A 1st round pick is always a risk. Could bust, could boom, which is why a mid first rounder is worth less than Larkin. And why I wouldn't do that deal. Would I give up what Calgary gave up for him? Yes, I would. But either Larkin or 6th overall plus our two seconds? Too rich for my blood. -
Why? The Sheahan, Mrazek, Kindl, Wilson, and Tatar deals weren't good moves? Yep. There's a reason why these guys are looking. There's definitely a pattern. Woof, woof.

Realistically tho, the only way to really get a true 1D is thru the draft. On the rare occasion that one becomes a free agent, there are too many teams trying to sign them and the contracts get way out of hand. Plus the team who does sign them is usually already good, and they pay the price later for those contracts. Trading for one isn't really any better as its short-sighted, and the assets required to obtain one are too high of a price to pay. I m not sold on Carlson. I see him more as another Niskanen. He may be a top pair D, but he will not be worth his new contract, I guarantee it. The best course to take IMO is to continue to draft heavily on D. All of the best Wings players since Yzerman have all been later round picks (after the 2nd round). At some point we will hit on one of those picks and find the next Lidstrom. Even a blind squirrel finds the occasional nut. Some people call it "parity". -
Fixed it for ya.

I think that's the point.

He is literally the only D drafted that I could see making the team (except Dahlin of course). I still think its highly unlikely tho. -
I mean Holland is kind of a zombie, I guess.
